Fixing a faulty rechargeable UV curing light.

- This is the rechargeable variation of the USB powered ultraviolet lacquer/glue curing and exposing light. It arrived defective with the charging circuitry for the internal cell seemingly intact, but no operation of the output.
The unit is quite a functional device (now I've repaired it), but the switching system is a design weakness. A simple button would have been more useful. I guess maybe the main market of nail varnish curing means that a simple press on the top is a preferred way of activation.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of RUclips's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.
Clive i get the feeling you are one of the few people that are joyful when your items are delivered damaged.
Saved from being tossed in a landfill, fixing anything feels pretty good. Good job Clive!
Good point.
Bigclive can now do his nails without any problems...
One of the funniest part of your videos is when you go out of mic range looking for something and not finding it :)
PieterD82YT "One moment please..."
Is this the first Big Clive video where the thing messed with actually *works as intended* at the end?
I miss the part where everything is going up in flames, while Big Clive says "oh, that's not good. wait a minute!"
rarbi.art "one moment please"...
I'm convinced that you nearly said "In your handbag" when you explained how the button lock function would protect against accidental operation!
Clearly he misspoke, was clearly trying to say tactical belt pouch or tactical backpack... :-)
Or mayhaps he was talking about that gender statistically more likely to wear clothing lacking in pocket capacity, thus more likely to carry a bag. 'Course some handbags can be tactical too: images-2.svd.se/v2/images/193695f8-48df-4316-9cd0-6a1265a14a45?fit=crop&h=417&q=70&w=625&s=75ae7f155abe5db23fbdb6c9dd0e87c6b7acf227
The shell looks like an Apple Magic Mouse to me.. except with normal USB port placement
The place making these are most likely using old mouse molds.
No. The plastic parts for the Magic Mouse doesn't look like this at all. It's not a hard shape to copy.
About those LEDs, I saw an ad for one of these units that said in the notes: "Double light source that are 365nm and 405nm, makes this dryer suitable for drying nail UV-gel and LED nail gel and some others." So that seems to be the reason for the double die.
Needs to be a more lurid pink.
Spray paint then he could make it HOT Pink.
Clive, or the light? ;)
It cracks me up that you're the only electronics dude on RUclips that's like "fuck a proper soldering station" and "fuck appropriately sized chisel tips" even though you solder all the time.
my windows almost shattered when you said 'they tend to go way off shot' ;-)
Hey Clive, IKEA has a new USB charger doodad now called the LÖRBY - uses a 24V wall adapter that goes to a remote 3-socket charging unit. I'd love to see you take one to bits as a successor to the KOPPLA review from a little while ago!
I have a feeling it is the same chip controlling it. The current specs are the same for both chargers. But would like to see BigClive check it out.
I doubt that the KOPPLA will vanish, this new device serves a slightly different market as it just puts the USB charge ports onto the desktop which some will find attractive.
Not enough hot-glue in the production .. did that get too expensive now ?? :-/
both powercell and soldered cables would have been fixed with hot-glue in the old days ;-)
(i even had a flexible hot glue version once! more like silicone)
I wonder if you could erase an EPROM with one of these. I have a cheapy little unit that seems to work but I'm not sure how bright it actually gets in there, nor what is necessary for a good erase.
Alec J I believe the UV wavelength used for erasing EPROMs is quite different to the wavelength of UV light given out by these products.
I have thought to ask you this a few times and forgot to.
How often do you end up chasing screws around the desk and onto the floor?
Sean Not-telling He should get one of those magnetic trays for the screws
Zaklamp They are so so effective for non-ferris metal screws though (like brass). Not that you would expect to find non-ferris screws in cheap stuff.
Thanks Clive another informative look inside. The Chinese think the grey plastic bags they ship in magically go hard and protect things in transit, then immediately go soft again just when they arrive in the UK . Try and explain this to them on eBay and they reply saying we are there new friend !!!
The thing that looks out of place is the 3M tape. If it's genuine. Not what I'd expect in cheap Chinese products. I know China makes much cheaper tape.
Same here.. 3M .. woah..
i'suggest if this is original 3M tape, it has not left the facility through the normal exit.
b-grade or overhead production :-)
When I buy cheap Chinese led lighting tape they always have a fake 3M fixing on the back, so I know they make it. How do I know it’s fake? Because it’s crap. It’s just cheap Chinese sticking tape covered in 3M printed wax paper, guaranteed to fail as soon as it gets warm. I add bits of double sided foam tape to compensate.
I used to work for 3M and I'm pretty sure it's fake. As everyone knows, China excels at manufacturing fake goods and adhesive products are not outside their realm of expertise! I expect 3M are well aware of such shenanigans.
Your voice is so calming! Kinda like a meditation 😂 i really wish u could fix my led lamp. It arrived faulty and I tore it down. Was wondering can i just connect the led light directly to a power source. It just shows positive n negative on the wires. Do i need a circuit board? Thank for your help!
It does need the drive circuitry.
that 3M tape are supposed to be a double sided tape but they've used it as a single sided to hold the battery down
nice vid Clive.. always a pleasure to watch!
0:15 I've purchased the exact same product with the white one you are holding . I will be using it for making presensitized pcb for circuits. My only problem is , it stops at specific timing. Is there any way I could remove the timer so that it'll have a consistent lighting?
Hi! Do you have a video of the other lamp being fixed? I have one of those and mine won't turn on even though it's been on the charger all afternoon . Help!
Try clicking the button several times or holding it in for a while to see if it has a lockout feature to avoid accidental activation.
@@bigclivedotcom I've tried this. Holding the button down for a good number of seconds, still nothing. do you think it could be a wiring issue?
The diode does more than just prevent backfeeding, it *also* drops most of the voltage to get from the USB input to 4.2 volts.
Looks like someone used double-sided tape as a "plaster".
"That's quite promising... but that's what I got at the other side..." Spiritualist BigClive realising that someone almost got to play a trick on him. ;)
Clive, all those pound shop visits, and they don’t have a larger magnifying glass? Hehe
Would you have fixed it if it wasn't pink?
You should do a video on TRIAC/LED/CFL dimmers! Would love to see you year these down!!!
That battery was so close to die.. multiple times. It was like an action movie for me.
Nice fix Clive
Clive, will this device stay on long enough to erase an EPROM (assuming that the wavelength is suitable)?
Manolis Gledsodakis The UV wavelength used for erasing EPROMs is quite different to the wavelength of UV light given out by these products. The wavelength needed is 253.7nm and typically it takes 20 to 30 minutes under a suitable strong UV lamp.
You ever looked into a high powered pc psu clive? I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.
Can you do a review on how to fix Sun LED lamp for curing your nails u can order it from eBay
That soldering iron is fine for SMD, i used an antex xs25 when i changed a led, plenty of heat, gets done quicker, and melts that damn lead free better :D
Hi Clive, couldn't find any other way to get in touch.
I've got a couple of Sure Flap microchip cat flaps which have stopped working so my first stop for help is RUclips. After an extensive search all I found was a load of promotional videos. I was wondering, if an opportunity arises that you could do a teardown of said electronic cat flap with a schematic and an explanation of how it all works. The fault with one of mine is when it's in learn mode it's not recognising the chip. Hoping you can make a frustrated electronics beginner a little more accomplished.
Cheers Chris.
When repairing something that had a raw li ion prism cell, is it ok to use a cell with its own protection circuit board? So the circuit esssentially has two over/under charge protection circuits. Or would they interfere with each other?
Yes, it should be fine.
Cheers. Soz if you covered this in vid. I just wanted to get the question in while you might have been hovering.. Boight some spinner usb lighters on banggood and both came with a spike of metal, from the housing, stabbed into a swollen and leaking prism cell. Circuit boards seem fine after removing scary cells.
You have taught me so much, thanks once again.
That there looks like a skottky diode in series with the USB, would have been much better with a regular diode since it would decrease the voltage coming in and would make less of a chance for the battery to go over voltage, after all the DW01 is for protection and not charge.
Why do battery wires fall off if you look at he circuit board harshly ?
Is it lead corrosion, cut cores when stripping, work hardedning when flexed.
Or the usual "I dunno, stuff just happens"
Soldered leads have a stress point where the wicked up solder transitions to the free strands.
@@bigclivedotcom so that's point for work hardening with only a few flexes as it's assembled and torn down. Makes sense.
Thanks !
Big Clive, where can I send you something? Do you have a PO Box?
You just hoiked that cover right off.
How may of us realised at 1:30 what Clive took until 5:50 to spot?
+Graham Langley You guys currently have the advantage of seeing much more detail than I see in real life.
This is true.
+bigclivedotcom yeah I even need reading glasses now :(
Looks like Apples contractors soldered their two year old retina machines IC's with Chip Quick or soft pewter. You can push it aside with a cold screwdriver. Their IC's and SMD's are working their way off the boards. The problem part is the power supply for the graphics cards. They are melting the solder just by running at normal temperatures and falling off or working their way sideways shorting out and frying the systems. Bump the machine while it's warm and the SMD's would fall off.
Hey Papa, would you like a fully functional RS Micronta clam shell digital VOhm meter?
Are you planning another meet-up any time soon?
What wavelenght this leds emit? I'm having a hard time finding some real 365nm leds from china :/
What soldering iron are you using?
Clive, I've got a question that you might be able to answer in a video or so: When I put a multimeter in "continuity testing" mode, and connect it to a circuit or component that doesn't make it beep, what are the numbers displayed on the screen? I don't even know which unit it displays in that mode (is it Ohms? But then, the number is different than in the Ohms setting...Or is it voltage? but where shoult that voltage come from, if the circuit isn't powered?). My main multimeter even has an extra "beeper on" button I have to press before it beeps upon continuity, and otherwise it just shows 0.00, but in which unit I have never been able to figure out. So what does that mean?
continuity mode may also be used for diode test, and if so 'may' be indicating voltage...depends on the meter, on continuity range , they normally only beep when below a certain value, check the instructions if you have them or try googling them if you dont...
It depends on the meter. On mine it has a resistance, a diode and a continuity mode (same dial position, then selected by button press).
In diode mode it displays the forward voltage of the diode at a mA or so. In continuity mode it just display the usual resistance, but it's not autoranging like the resistance mode itself and beeps if the resistance is below a certain value. What you meter does? I don't know. Check the manual. They can all be different.
OK, my main multimeter has one setting for "diode/continuity", and when I dial that in, I have to press a button for it to beep when there's continuity. Which means: What does it display in the general diode mode? And what does it display after I pushed that button while not measuring a straight (close to or at 0 Ohm) continuity so it doesn't beep, but shows something else instead? What does it show? I've always used the "beeping mode" to check for continuity and never cared about anything else, but the fact that the meter displays something when it isn't beeping suggests that there might be some kind of value to the number that's displayed. I just don't know how to make any sense of it? (And I guess I'm not the only one that's treating the continuity test like that, so it might be worth a video??)
in diode mode, it will be the voltage, that you get with a constant-ish current through the diode on test, on continuity its usually a fixed low ohms range, usually 200 ohm max, so displays resistance, but only beeping below a certain point, as for exactly what point, the instructions should tell you, it may vary with different brands and models of meter
some cheap meters may have a combined diode/continuity test, only indicating resistance, but test current is higher than normal, indicating only resistance, and once again beeping below a certain point..
I have a iPod nano 2nd gen, can a mod be made to get the battery out and use a external power pack? I hate to bring it to apple...
Arjan Wilbie if it is an apple device just throw it in the bin where it belongs.
you just wanted an excuse to open something up. we know how you are.
yet another good video. thanks
Nail Gel Curing Lamp Light Nail Gel Polish Dryer. what you need that for? Do you nails?
UV glue and gel curing plus printed circuit photoresist exposure.
I bet this compared to dental curing light would have hard time curing the resin.
Thanks for sharing :-)
I need help ... can someone help me ? I used a laptop charger on my uv/led lamp and it turned on at first but then it got hot and I disconnected it but now only the on and off button works and the lights don’t want to
If you used the wrong voltage of adaptor it may have damaged the lamp.
Well crap, I just ordered these after watching that video heh. Thanks for the heads up!
Hmm I've seen that white one come with a phone screen protector set.
makes you wonder why it has two switches anyway if it doesn't matter
So you can press anywhere on the lid to start it.
How can i take the timer off so it's constant Bro?
You'd have to bypass the control completely. The heat dissipation may not be suited to running the LEDs continuously.
@@bigclivedotcom thanxs dude legend, could you perhaps do a video of doing this and adding a heat sink, I would for sure like to learn sme safe methods and you know your stuff man,
Well, I’m sure we all look forward to seeing your nails looking real purdy on your next vid, now, Clive! ;)
Just kidding, I know he uses them to make small custom printed circuit boards.
Lumibear Um, you have obviously not seen his previous video then!!!!!
Mark 1024MAK - You mean practical uses of nail varnish?
Amazing what a drop of glue can do to prevent such calamities, that and something better than a thin plastic bag for packaging... :P
Use a flux when soldering
how do we send you things?
Clive, i think it's about time you make some magic smoke escape again. I find your lack of destruction lately... Disturbing.. (heavy breathing)
6:24 The janitor
probe it ? like the aliens probe stuff hahaha
Sweet Fix that inevitably breaks something else that you will then have to fix too!!! ;)
The weird things that must be on your wish list
battery probably shifted during assembly.
+bigclivedotcom - On your AMECaL 9905 meter - I like what I've seen of it so far; BUT. If you look into buying one here in the US, the meter costs 48 EUR or so, plus $28 EUR for shipping (this is through eBay / Amazon, but basically the same sort of costs through the manufacturer.) Shipping seems a lot for a multimeter, I've shipped a lot of things internationally, they don't HAVE to go overnight :) Wondering if you know of an equivalent that someone's been happy with that'd be less costly in the US, offhand? If not, that's fine, I figure I have to ask to see if you know though. Still enjoying the channel, just got a BUNCH of radio parts and so on for the cost of fuel to go pick them up, that was massively worth it! (Knob Variable caps as in main tuning device for a radio, are not cheap! Transformers and fans and other goodies too, oh my!)
Time for the spudger.
Looks like you can find almost anything in pink on ebay
Clive needs to be the next voice of Shrek! Do you do voice acting?
So the people handling this did not mind a fire neat.
I'm not a pink fan, but that is a particularly ugly pink. (sorry!)
First thing I noticed were the 3M components. Oh, how the mighty have fallen...
“3M” double sided tape. They make the real thing as well, tapes and adhesives are one of their primary products.
Are you going to paint your nails and give this a proper test?
his coworkers would frown for sure ;)
They look just like a apple Magic Mouse! Me thinks they copied the design. Hehe
at timeline 4:33 Please.... someone should send clive a better bigger magnifier ASP
delivery guy football ;)
im wondering why i dident get a notification anybody els have that problem?
Very Macig Mouse looking
You know they do refunds? 👍
now u can do your nails! hehe
I found a video on facebook under its gone viral.
and yet another microphone
500mAh is a big lithium cell? I guess I've been spoiled, for me big is 5000mAh
Please
