Hi Coach. Nice breakdown. I love slide protection and I think it gets a bad rep, like it's lazy or something. For schemes like Run and Shoot and especially empty backfields, it's simply unbeatable.

Nothing lazy about it! The only issue is getting the back on those big stud Defensive Ends. That is why I like it for 3 step and play action, but not as much for 5 step.

Coach, do you know of any slide protections drills?

Hey coach! It’s been a while since you posted but at 3:22 you’ve got the back blocking the edge weak side instead of the sam. Would it be more advantageous to have the back robot the Sam/weak side safety

Coach, is the H-back chipping the DE, then slide to the flat? What is blocking responsibility of R?

It all depends on the kids, the scheme, etc. H Back will normally be taught to run through the wrong shoulder (back shoulder instead of upfield) or just act like you whiff. Personally, I don't like teaching the R back to block. I want the R to give a good hard run fake and get the DE to tackle him. If the H and R sell it, we don't have to block him.

How come in this situation, the Will isn’t the mike? The guy inside the x is in the box so I thought the count start with him, then the will, then mike. And I thought the slide should go towards the left. I’m still new at this so if I can get a response, I’d appreciate it.

The call side is to the right, so the Mike is the mike. That's our system, we can slide either way because we use slide protection on more than just 3-step. I could understanding sliding more to the left with a right handed QB to have the tackle protect his back side, but the slide doesn't always have to go left. It depends on personnel, the play call, etc.

Please show slide protection against a 5-3 defense.

If all are covered you may just have to all slide .5 man and go 1on1 down the board.
