    I remember getting this from my local Walmart when games were kept behind a glass case. Though deep down I knew better, I was anxious to get home to see how the game lived up to the box's artwork. To invoke horror using the commercially available technology at the time shouldn't be overlooked nor forgotten. Thanks for this video!

    Wow!!! Best cartridge artwork yet!!! That’s beautiful. My friend had this as a kid. But, we could never figure out what to do. I also had a recent renewed interest through emulation and discovered how good it really is. It is quite a challenge. Another great showcase video. Loving these!

    I've been enjoying this series and im looking forward to the next one. I noticed something intersting this time around. At 3:55 when you opened the flap, whoever designed the box used the bat from Adventure instead of the bat from Haunted House.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Год назад +3

      Thanks, Glen. Dang, you're right! I knew they looked familiar, and kind of thought they used the same sprite, but I just double-checked and sure enough, the HH bat is slighly different (no pixel gaps in the wings' downstroke at all). Whoops!

    I was always more of a space shooter guy but Haunted House was and still is one of my faves!
    The younger of my two older sisters loved it too. We spent a lot of time trying the harder variations until I was out of my league (being about 9 or 10 at the time). I enjoyed with wild wonder watching my then 17 or 18 year old sister going far beyond. Even eventually winning the game on level 9. We thought it was the greatest experience ever! Haha! 🙂

    Back in the day pre-internet, me and my best friend didn't have any instructions for our Atari games because they were all hand-me-downs from other people. I eventually figured out Haunted House, but I can't say the same thing for E.T. IMO Adventure is a lot of fun to figure out for yourself without instructions, and I think that is the best way to play it.

    Although I thought that the "Haunted House" looked interesting, I didn't have it. I did, however, have the Epyx 500XJ Joystick that you used in the presentation! So, that was a great surprise.
    It's such a sentimental flashback to see it again after all these years - and hearing the "clicking" sound through its every movement, humorously reminded me of how it was a little inconvenient to try and inconspicuously play games late at night; especially, on a school night.
    I even used it as the main controller for games such as Montezuma's Revenge, Jumpman Junior, and Kareteka - among others - when later receiving the (incredible) Atari 800xl.
    The form fitting design felt natural and required less movement for activity, though it still had to be held in the left hand the entire time which could give me the same fatigue that I feel in holding my cell phone for too long (as I'm doing at this moment - ha). Regardless, I loved it.
    Of the three controllers that I had back then, the Epyx was my favorite. Another model, which you may have also seen or owned, was the Discwasher Pointmaster. It featured a fire button on top of a tall glossy black futuristic jet fighter-styled joystick which was grasped entirely by the right hand, with the fire button being activated with the thumb of that same hand.
    Unfortunately, due to the placement of the fire button and imbalance of weight at the controller's base (which could have benefited from a suction cup for a smooth, flat surface), the stability was over-powered and made for an awkwardly inaccurate experience, overall. It was rarely used as a result. I'm now remembering just how irritating it was, in just thinking about it. (ha)
    The third controller, was great simply because it was an accessory called "Stick Stand" which housed a standard Atari joystick into a large square base to keep it (mostly) anchored onto a flat surface by rubberized points on the underside of the corners It even included a red ball to attach at the top of the stick itself to simulate the feel of a coin-op arcade controller.
    That was ideal for most action games - especially for Frogger, Pitfall! and Dodge 'em at the time.
    If you haven't done a feature on Atari joystick controllers as of yet, I think that would be entertaining subject to highlight.
    As always, thanks for the great video!

Wanted to let you know that the pin I received is not made out of plastic/resin, but it feels and looks like it's made out of some type of metal. The back of the pin is painted black and that might be what might make it appear like plastic/resin. Centipede is may favorite Atari game and the only one I ordered from this collection. What I thought was amazing about this game, back in the day, was that it simulated a 3D environment.
    Is the map for the 3rd floor still wrong in the new manual? In the original manual the doors were rotated 180 degrees while the stairs were right.

    I hope that everyone who wants to complete their sets will be able to do so, it would suck to miss one or two and only having the option of buying from an Ebay scalper. I personally collect Sears Tele-Games branded Atari and I'm two games short of having a complete 'complete in box' Sears collection. Unfortunately, "Cannon Man" and Sears variant of "Superman" are quite rare and go for more $$$ than I am remotely willing to spend, so my collection will most likely remain two games short indefinitely.

      @@GenXGrownUp No. I don't own any modern game consoles and my computer is seriously out of date. I've watched a video of it and it looked interesting though.
      I keep hoping that someone will make an updated port for the C64, with nicer graphics, bigger maps, etc. They've done it with some other games, but Haunted House is probably too obscure/niche for such a project.

    2:33 - Is it just me, or did that shrink wrap look too tight - from my POV, it almost looks like the box underneath is being squeezed from a too tight shrink wrap.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Год назад +1

      It's most definitley tight, but just slightly and caused no permanent bending or buckling. I can't hold Atari entirely responsible for it, though. Shrink wrap items shipped to my home in Florida are subjected to 100-plus-degree (Fahrenheit) temps, so it may well have tightened up in the box during shipping.

    Not a big fan of this sold-out collectible antiquated game thing. You can get these real games for a few dollars not to mention the roms in collections or however. Mainly what I hate is these being sold out so fast shows it's just exclusionary to most people, just another manufactured scarcity product while a lot of people nostalgic for the games will never be able to own these. Some people are already trying to flip some Atari XP on ebay for $500. Sad.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  Год назад +1

      I've seen the auctions. Crazy. In fairness, a vintage sealed Haunted House is going for $65, and for $99 you get that plus all the little bonuses, so pricing isn't as radical as it seems at first blush. The scarcity, however, I couldn't agree more. Make them available to anyone who wants them now or in the future. Or maybe widely available for a limited time.
