    Polishing the brass is fine ...repainting the metal work black again is fine ...not denaturing the fabric and wood is the biggest priority. Remove the labels as they are often used to hide holes...
    The french rivet system is fantastic... the brass end is cast into the nail..the nail has a washer put over it at the other end .is snapped of and hammered down...to remove the rivets/nails,grind the little disk off from the inside. Then just push the nail out.. you can redrill the brass end and solder in a new nail. I do it all the time . Usually handle nails are hammered in ,u shaped and hammered back in to create extra strength.removing that fabric was a huge mistake...the original grey was painted over .you should have stripped the paint.
