Time truly flies by, one moment you sitting down watching CN, without any worries in your life. And suddenly you're all grown up, with too much knowledge of how the world functions. I miss the happy times.
Guys, friends ... I recall watching this when I was a very young kid (was born in 88). This was on just long enough for me to have a memory of it. This was one of those lost, rare gems of a show when I look back on it. Brethren, rejoice, that we lived and grew up in such wonderful eras ... the 80s and 90s.
I was looking up two shows I couldn't remember the name of that I loved during childhood, pirates of dark waters was one, and you just told me the other....swat cats, thank you lol.
I remember years ago Cartoon Network was poking fun at this cartoon about lost episodes of the pirates of dark water. I've always thought they finished the series, but they never aired the remaining episodes and thought it would someday be released in a boxed DVD or blue ray set.
+Stephen Andrano All of the episodes are officially available on Amazon. The show was just never finished and there's quite a bit of rumor and speculation as to why that was. The only info that seems to be commonly accepted is the poor budgeting. The show was expensive for the time and none of the major studios thought the show had a big enough audience to justify the costs going into it. The show was originally SUPPOSED to be scrapped at 13 episode but the creator and producer eventually secured a deal to do 8 more episodes for a Hanna Barbera TV block. The interesting rumors that seem to be plausible as well is that the show had issues with management and not being able to get the episodes completed on time and given the info that there were budget issues I kind of don't doubt it. You also have to remember that at the time another popular show was struggling by the name of Swat Kats, this was because the networks that produced the show (and Pirates Of Dark Water) under guidance of Ted Turner were trying to steer away from programming that they thought was too violent for kids and this caused an extra burden on production and it delayed a lot of episodes and merchandising for the show to be released. It's not unlikely that this could have been the case for Pirates Of Dark Water as well. Either way, sorry to disappoint but only 21 episodes were ever created or aired.
Hey Everyone, just thought I'd like to share the reason why the show was cancelled!: Although the show was doing well in the ratings, still the show got cancelled due to failing to meet the airdates. Pirates of Dark water was cancelled long before the last 4 episodes were released on television. This was because Fil-Cartoons (Overseas Animation) took great deal of time in Animating episodes for Season 3 (The Dark Disciples to The Living Treasure) episodes. Because of this, the animation of last 4 episodes wasn’t finished on time which led to the cancellation. Due to the failing of meeting the airdates, Jayne Barbera was replaced by Catherine Winder as Executive in Charge of Production. Catherine Winder was Executive in Charge of Production for SWAT Kats and 2 Stupid Dogs. So now you know. It's a shame such a good show got axed :(
"The alien world of Mer is being devoured by Dark Water, only Ren, a young prince can stop it by finding the lost Thirteen Treasures of Rule. At his side, his' unlikely, but loyal crew of misfits. At his back, the evil pirate lord, Bloth, who would stop at nothing to get the treasures for himself. It's high adventure with THE PIRATES OF DARK WATER!"
Two most underrated shows that never finished their storylines: 1. Pirates of Dark Waters 2. Gargoyles 3. Gummy Bears (they had some great episodes about the lost civilization of other Gummies...sounds cheesy but as kids we were riveted)
Dave Trachtenberg Gargoyles finished where they made their presence known to the public and saved people on a train from the stonecutters. I thought that was actually a very appropriate way for it to end.
+JoKeR I totally agree. As long as it was done right, I would watch the /hell/ out of a PoDW remake. If it was done badly, though, it would really hurt.
Uncontrollable wave of nostalgic joy just ran over my heart. I enjoyed this show when I was a kid. I wish they would have at least ended it properly. Also, I can not express my annoyance at the people who are constantly posting "90s Kid" style art and videos. If you were BORN is the 90s, you aren't a 90s kid. It would be like me saying that I'm an 80s kid, yet I was born in 1986. Plus, you never see any other decade do this. I'm going to make a spoof about the 1490s.
I was going through some old comic books that I have and found a few Pirates of Dark Water comics, I haven't thought about this show in over 20 years! I loved this show when I was younger, definitely one of my favorites!
This show is something that I am now rewatching. Man, this show was ahead of its time. It has a great sense of atmosphere and fun. However, it was also serious with stakes that were incredibly high. And finally, last but not least, characters, like Ren, who were so relatable. A part of me would love to see this series in the form of a live action movie trilogy or saga. It's open ended nature of finding treasure and fighting adversity on the seas is a theme, I think could resonate well with audiences. I know many corporate minds would automatically compare this to Pirates of the Caribbean. And this is understandable. However, if I were to pitch this to studio heads/investors I'd say Pirates of Dark Water would best be described as follows: mix the ideas of Sinbad(a high swinging adventure) and combine it with Flash Gordon in how out there and creative the worlds are. But that's just me. If anyone has a better description, I'm all game. Heck, I'm casually working on a screenplay for fun. I doubt I'll get anywhere with it, but who knows?
Yes golden days for cartoons now Cartoon Network has become the mockery crap network. Go to funniermoments if you want episodes of this tv show, flintstones, cops the cartoon, scooby doo where are you and multiple other golden day cartoons.
***** The 80s are hard to beat! Transformers, GI Joe, bad anime dubs, I grew up with that too! Voltron! And at the same time 90s Xmen, bad anime dubs and Doug too. Fun to compare how we all look back!
I am ashamed to say that I had completely and utterly forgotten about this, until like 2 days ago. When I saw just 3 seconds, saw the characters, heard the music... it all just kicked in. I really need to watch this because I remember loving it even though I don't remember the details.
This show was freaking epic! Why in the hell did they cancel it when they had like 5 treasures left? I always wondered this when they kept on showing reruns with no new episodes.
Yeah when you were a kid almost everything was awesome and it's easy to only remember all tv shows as being really good. It's very nice to go back as an adult and watch your favourite childhood shows and see that some of them still hold up! :) I'm gonna try that with Pirates of Dark Water now that I've finally found it again. ;)
This cartoon holds so much importance to me. I used to watch this everyday when I was 3-4 with my dad. I wish i could go back to that time. this show will always remind me of simpler times
I just can't believe how well done the cartoons of the early 90s were. Comparing Pirates of Dark Water to Steven Universe can only lead to the conclusion that we have gone backwards!
Steven Universe would better be compared to something like Dexters Laboratory, It's a solid show but hardly comparable to a straight up action cartoon. It's also a show with 11 minute episodes like Dexter. The best modern comparison for Pirates of Dark Water is something like the Avatar series, which is actually pretty solid, the real issue is that it's nearly the ONLY comparison to Pirates of Dark Water. American action cartoons like Gargoyles and Batman have all but disappeared and it's pretty sad. We need more.
+Jon Bilgutay I never watched this show but I think you all should love it the way it is and not have it ruined with a remake. This show is precious to you all
***** honestly NO it was semi episodic and slow to progress only lasted a single season so a remake would not be a bad thing (plus the art style could do with a polish)
I remember watching this for the first time and I was hooked at the opening credits. Just watching this you knew that you were in for greatness. Shame that it never was completed.
i totally forgot this cartoon and i didn't even remember the theme song directly but when i did i remember that i have so good memory that time.thanks so much

same with all of us, bro
They will be back buddy! If we manage to get to the singularity, all these worlds from these treasured shows will be rendered fully and wholy.
and you haven't even mentioned the worst thing: cartoon network sux now!
Yes i miss those days😭😭😭
Yeah, I wish I can stay in my childhood a little longer now that I know what adulthood is like.
This show was a HUGE influence on me; some 25 years later, I'm running a D&D campaign and this is pretty much exactly what it looks like in my head.
i wonder if the creator knows, that the show has such a big cult following. the show was awesome
yes it was i remember even now :) after 20 years
yea we had all the good stuff back then its a shame we never get to finish the story
clinton caple
:)
If I was peter jackson I would totally make a Pirates of Dark water movie.
true true :)
One the best animated series ever made!! Amazing animation, incredible plot and cool characters!! A classic masterpiece from the 90's!!

Shows that need to come back one day: pirates of dark water, swat cats, gargoyles and talespin.
+Tao Jones T.jones Swat-Kats you say? Then we have some good news when you see Swat-Kats Revolution.

I can't believe this got canceled before they even found all the treasures -.-
I just thinking the same thing===
Me neither! I was really annoyed by this when watching the show back in the day. I'm still pissed off btw :/
Ouch.
That sucks :(
I mean, this show looks amazing :)
wolfguy23 This show IS amazing. Great setting, even better characters, and treason and plot G.R.R Martin wouldn't be ashamed of.
Not to mention the universe and atmosphere beats even pirates of the Caribbean - over 20 years prior, at that.
I don't think I will ever get over this show not having an ending. A shame.

+NYG4LIFE123 me either. I must see the end. Somebody should get a hold of it and get the rights to finish making episodes for it.
Wow i though i never knew that show didnt have ending, i though they canceled it while i was kid :( left so many scars ;((
Swat Kats was so so good.

I heard that it's production costs were too high.
they ruin everything
it was one of them that also cancelled firefly
BRING THIS BEAUTIFUL SHOW BACK IT DESERVES AN ENDING
no don't, they'll butcher it, leave this show pristine in my childhood memories, unmarred by the ravages of modern sensibilities
they should i got canceled because every one was watching x men cartoon to bad came on same time ....
@@SaltpeterTaffy it never even had a full season wth you talking about? Xmen was watched over this so was canceled before even a full season
@@spiffdaddy Two seasons. 21 episodes. Cancelled into its second season.
Only found 13 treasures of rule
I lawled. Man I haven't seen this in forever. Serious 90's flash back.

I would love to see a live action film or a live action tv series out of this. The Pirates of Dark Water is one of my favorite shows.
😃Me 2 personally, Windell Pete!😄
Live action with Zac Efron as Ren!😁✌
I was so young watching this it feels like a fever dream from an old memories.
This show was the shit when I was a kid! Can't believe I forgot about it.
80s and 90s kids TV shows had a wonderful spirit of adventure.
I always used to watch this back in my childhood! Great memories! Thanks for posting!
Damn almost completely forgot about this show! The nostalgia is real right now.
Damn do I ever miss the 90s. I was 9 when this came out and we loved it.
This is unquestionably 1 of the all-time greatest cartoons ever created! Warner Bros, please I beg you bring back POTDW!!!
Two most underrated shows that never finished their storylines:
1. Pirates of Dark Waters
2. Gargoyles
3. Gummy Bears (they had some great episodes about the lost civilization of other Gummies...sounds cheesy but as kids we were riveted)
I just watched the Gargoyles episode and suddenly remembered about the Pirates. These two really come hand in hand.
You had me on the first two, and then you went right off the rails.
Dave Trachtenberg Gargoyles finished where they made their presence known to the public and saved people on a train from the stonecutters. I thought that was actually a very appropriate way for it to end.
You forget Fish Police
Try and find the Gummi Bears intervention scene for Tummi on Robot Chicken. It's solid gold.
I loved this cartoon when I was a kid, been trying to remember the title for years. Thank you so much!!
One of my favorite shows when I was a kid. Would look really cool as a live action.
I was just watching this with my dad. It makes me feel so old.
I've been searching for this show for 15 years!
Dude I just found it too, isn't that insane? I could never seem to find it lol
swat cats for the win, folks! :3
Bring this show baaaack. It was awesome.

The art is absolutely gorgeous.
Reboot this series, DAMN IT!

Reboot ReBoot while you're at it.
Or give it a film like the 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.
HELL NO! Don’t reboot it... get people to imitate the animation style, hire all the original cast, and continue it!

Being a kid in the 90´s was simply EPIC !
It's when we peaked as a species
1991-1993 classic brings back good feelings.
They should just finish the show now. Just air past episodes with properly made ending

Good lord, in the 90th-ies, I watched from VHS'. I feelin' old now...
Why no one has ever talked about this show during our “90s nostalgia” era boggles my mind. Please bring this back.
Bring it back to ruin?
still pissed off this was cancelled way too soon.
Shane Rogers creator died before it finished
David Kirschner's still alive.
This and Swat Kats were my absolute favorite shows to watch.
