I think he is majestic and he thinks so as well. This was fun watching. We used to have wild turkey come down the hill to eat corn that the neighbors put out.At time there were at least 16 hens and about 3-4 large Toms. One day I was in the living room and the largest one was at the patio doors watching himself in the reflection and trying to challenge.I had the best show ever.Have a blessed weekend.Wish I was there,
Thank you! I originally hatched him and his mate from eggs in an incubator in the house for someone else. They were moving and wanted to know if I wanted them back and I gladly welcomed them back home. They were quite literally "hand raised" - watching TV while sitting on someone's lap in the living room.
We have several sheds on the farm, but everything already has been designated for a purpose...ie: wood shed, work shed, hen house, garden shed, etc. Tom & Hen are very comfy in their new home and I can visit them any time I want.
If that turkey wanted to, he could have genuinely attacked you. He could have run up to you and pecked your leg, maybe jab you with his spurs. However, he would pursue you and then stop before actually attacking you. The Jenny that was nearby him was making some distress calls, so she was afraid. It’s likely that he was just telling you to “back away from my girl” rather than actual aggression or desire to genuinely harm you as a way to protect his girl. That’s a good thing and means that he will protect your girl from other threats as well, he’s extremely brave to take on humans that could easily overpower him.
Donald (duck) and Mama, his mate sometimes try to defend the poor humans from Tom's aggressions. It's so cute how brave the little fella is. I've been paying Tom in extra treats whenever get nails the husband a good one with his talons.
I've had a few toms over the years, but this guy is the meanest one of all. We've got plenty of coyotes in our area too, but my dogs keep those varmints away. Tom likes to roost on the peak of the garage roof or on the chimney on the work shed at night. Even if a coyote got onto our property, there's no way they could get to Tom while he's snoozin'. lol
I must say u have a very good looking tom there. i never did have the courage to go over to an actual turkey before. I'm comfortable with going over to the hens but i get nervous when I'm near a tom.
I didn't sell them, but gave them to a friend that had a fenced coop/yard. I'd much rather have kept them of course, but the hubby is the coop/fence builder around here and he just wasn't going for it. If I had the money, I would have bought a chain link dog kennel & dog house for them, but money is scarce as hens teeth these days.
Thank you Hun. After hearing your story about the wild turkeys, I've decided Tom turkeys in general are stuck on themselves. Tom will see his reflection in a patio door we have sitting along side the wood shed and he'll just primp & pose in front of it for the longest time. lol
When I was a kid, I had a white turkey for a pet and he was mean. He would attack anybody but me. Many times he chase guests back into their cars or keep them indoors. His favorite food was dry dogfood and would chase the other dogs away to get to it. He had confrontations with the ducks and geese. He was very territorial.
My turkeys would get dry catfood for treats on occasion and they loved it. So did the ducks, Oh and the chickens too. lol It's actually good on occasion - high in protein.
I have a wild boy, about a year old, who I rescued as a chick and hand raised. He isn't aggressive towards anyone and spends all his time puffed up, strutting about. Even took him to my younger sibling's school. We do suspect he is a little special in the head though since he does weird things like spin in circles while looking at his feet and stand real still with his head pointed to the sky, not moving even if you cover his eyes.
Around here (KY) if the game warden/ranger sees you're keeping a 'wild' turkey, they'll take it from you and try to return it to the wild if possible. Seeing how he's kind of special, I would think a blind eye might be turned. ;)
Beautiful bird - I have one that has an attitude just like your Tom. He usually doesn't bother the kids but will go for my husband and even me when he's having a special kind of day. The other 2 usually try to come to my rescue lol It's quite cute. He's lucky he's my husbands or I would've made him dinner a long time ago!!
Wow, what a cool bird! I don't think Turkeys get the credit they deserve. They're either seen as food or as dumbies. But here, it looks like a brave little brown peacock! I'm assuming he only attacks male humans because he sees them as potential competitors, correct? How is he able to identify the gender of a human? I know birds don't have a very good sense of smell, so it must be visually. Very intriguing.
What’s even stranger is the fact that birds identify gender differently than humans. In birds, the females have dull coloring and don’t really stand out, meanwhile the males typically have bright colorations/more feathers for display purposes. In humans, females are the ones who typically display, not the males. In my mind, a bird should think that a female human would have short hair and that males should have the longer hair, but in Western societies this isn’t the case. Maybe they identify gender based on the deepness of a voice? Or maybe there’s a different factor that goes into it that we don’t understand.
He has red in his clothing. They hate red and blue. Turkeys decide if you are male or female depending on what they observe in a person. Everything they are doing in this video is wrong. Narragansett turkeys deserve better than this.
We're getting up in years and not as nimble as we used to be, so I figured a dog house inside a dog kennel would have made a nice shelter for Tom & his hen. Of course it wouldn't be as nice as roaming the entire farm like he was used to either.
It all depends on how young the toms are when you get them and how you decide to raise them. I had 3 toms a few years back that were more like puppy dogs since I raised them in the house for their 1st few weeks and they imprinted very deeply with me. They helped hubby clean the gutters and when he was laying under our truck fixing it, they would perch on his legs! lol
one of those rascals snatched one of my finger nails when i was like 6 years old! That's why I enjoy so much eating them for christmas!😁😁😋😋 I was trying to-do exactly what that guy is doing!
We don't usually "tease" the turkey like that. I was just wanting Tom to display some of his naughtiness for the camera...and he was happy to oblige. lol
Both the husband & son tried backing off and the more they backed, the faster Tom went after them. I guess Tom thought they were 'chicken' and figured he'd finish them off! Unfortunately, I had to re-home Tom and his hen to keep the husband from shooting him. :'( At least I know my birds have a good home where they won't be shot, nor eaten and I can visit whenever I want. Sure is more quiet around here without Tom gobbling at every new sight or sound.
Can u tell me why ur big boy Tommy isn't very fond of male people just female? Did someone do something to him in the years that made him not trust male people?
Lol. He's trying to sweet talk his lady and you keep getting in his way. Lol. How is he supposed to play big and bad defender if you keep calling his bluff and showing him for the "chicken" he really is? Lmao
+Baxton Brewer At the time this video was taken, I think he was about 3 yrs old. I hatched him, here at home in an incubator, but somebody else raised him. They were moving to the city and asked me if I would take him back, so I gladly welcomed the prodigal son back. lol
That was just pure evil for someone to steal a turkey right out of it's own yard! The longer I live the more I prefer critters over people. One of my dogs is named Cletus - he looks like your dog that was chasing the turkeys in your video. Couldn't tell if he had black or brown spots, but Cletus has brown spots like that (Lemon Beagle).
I remember having a Male german Shepherd and the trainer telling me he would not obey me because I was female. I had to have special collar on him when I walked him. It was crazy.
I'm writing this 5yrs and 1 day after this video posted. MY Tom was nice until today. He attacked my 5' 4" child. It is mating season, and Hen had started laying eggs, but not setting yet. I'm wondering if it's just a seasonal hormone thing? Would not want to kill him for just being "seasonally" hormonal.
He's just being macho with the coming of spring. His hormones are in an uproar and is showing off for the hen(s). The hen(s) will lay her eggs until she feels she is ready to hatch a clutch. She will have to lay several over a period of a couple of weeks, but they will still be good/viable. It's up to you though if you want her to try to hatch them. I thought one of my girls had been snatched by a predator, but she had just started a clutch of eggs under our horse trailer and was hiding out under there to hatch them. Whew!
U sold them? If you wanted to keep them and wanted to avoid them gettting shot, becoming dinner, or whatever then you could have built an indoor coop or something for them then you'd still have them and can avoid them gettting into trouble. Especially your tommy boy the gobbler.
They attack when you walk away, so you need to catch him the moment he attacks. If you're good you can feel when he gets close and reach around and grab his feet, and then you go over to the water bucket and do some dunks, then as you hold him up in front of the other birds upside down, smack him with your palm in the head a few times so all the birds can see. Then throw him along the ground so he rolls in the dirt further humiliating himself. Though you still have to be on your guard, a 2 second stare at that bird and it'll back down. Someone's got to be the dominant male, and at my place it's going to be ME!
Oh no, I would never be so mean to one of my birds. I figure what's the harm in letting him feel like or BE the big man on campus? Life's gotta be hard enough when you're a turkey and have to play by somebody else's rules.
I understand, and I would love a closer relationship. Sometimes the animal just comes out of me though when I bring this one food , turn around, and suddenly get a huge puncture wound in my calf! The other one used to be the top dog, but he mellowed after years of about 10 minutes of stroking him every night. The opening to the coop is about 4 feet up where they perch as the sun goes down. He (the other one) seems to really like the cuddling, the first barely at all. I would prefer to have a tender relationship with them always, but they are well fed, get a nice coop heated with a heat lamp when below 15 . I am keeping them alive and free to run in the yard till their natural end.
U know i just had a good idea. I see that when ur son back away from Tom, he like tries to scare him away for some by running towards him. I was thinking if ur son back away and tom was running at him or something then stopped. that might be a good chance for ur son to touch Tom. Maybe help Tom think that male humans aren't all that bad as he thinks they r.
Oh yes. He has 2 ladies to impress and that's just what he's trying to do. He's displaying his tail feathers & dragging his wing tips and when he gets closer to the gals, he emits a very low thumping sound from deep in his chest. He's ready to put the moves on those gals. lol
Such a gorgeous Turkey - beautiful color Patterns/display!
I think he is majestic and he thinks so as well. This was fun watching. We used to have wild turkey come down the hill to eat corn that the neighbors put out.At time there were at least 16 hens and about 3-4 large Toms. One day I was in the living room and the largest one was at the patio doors watching himself in the reflection and trying to challenge.I had the best show ever.Have a blessed weekend.Wish I was there,
a friend while living.
feast when you die.
I am from Turkey...
he's mad at the dude wearing angry colors
Holy cow that's a beautiful turkey. Respect to the turkey. Wowza.
Holt,What a stupid surname
Ron i left out the lol I was playing cos it's my surname aswell
I understand that part but either way i always get nervous when i'm near a tom. I always get nervous thinking about what the bird might do.
The turkeys on my grandma and Grandpa's farm were mean too.
he wont be acting so tough along about next November!
Nice and beautiful turkey, It can make a great pet too.
Thank you! I originally hatched him and his mate from eggs in an incubator in the house for someone else. I love wild turkeys. They are cool.
@@usmoshers aaawww
I've noticed that turkeys get upset by certain colors: the white propane truck, orange vests, red and black cars
Wow hes so beautiful you must love the bones of him in a nice way his feathers are so beautiful

AHAHAHHAHAHAHA!!! Good one! :D
Clever!

A very pretty bird. Wish i had him walking around in my yard. Nice to look at.
He sure is a talkative one.
I have an acquired distaste of mean/dangerous livestock, but I think he would actually taste well, rather tasty!
Awesome looking turkey

The funniest bird on earth 😂🦃🦃😂
I never heard of someone stealing a precious turkey before. is there a reason why someone would want to steal a bird?

Oooohhhh him so pretty , I can't wait to get me some. him soo proud ☺️
i love tom turkeys. They are so mean and fearless. the coyotes in our area stay clear from my toms

Well there's a bright side which is good. And that getting to see them anytime u wish.
This turkey is out of control! 😂😂😂
Nice Turkeys!
Why dog house?, u could just build something different for that bird
one of those rascals snatched one of my finger nails when i was like 6 years old! That's why I enjoy so much eating them for christmas!😁😁😋😋 I was trying to-do exactly what that guy is doing!

What about an old shed or something. do u have anything like that on the farm. u can make a coop for the gobbler and his mate.
Oh sure he will - he is strictly a pet, not supper.
stay way from my girlfriends 👯♀️
@2:05 that moment you start rooting for the turkey
I always rooted for the turkey. I just didn't let my men folk know. lol

Lol. He's trying to sweet talk his lady and you keep getting in his way. Lol. How is he supposed to play big and bad defender if you keep calling his bluff and showing him for the "chicken" he really is? Lmao
What a beautiful bird
question: that's a big body Turkey but it looks to a have a smaller sized beard. how old is it?
