Me too, i miss a new fall album every 12 months or so, sadly sadly missed, there will never be another group like the fall and luckily we have such an extensive back catalogue, all great in their own way. RIP MES
This video just came back to my mind this evening lol. I watched this randomly when I was 10, and thought the singer looked like Dave Days at the time I first discovered it.
Quite possibly - but what about all the footage from I AM CURIOUS ORANGE? What about "Right Place. Wrong Time", from that? I think "Right Place, Wrong Time" might be the ultimate Fall video for me. But this is pretty great.
Yeah! Mark looks so young and vulnerable here, with his hair in his eyes and his raggy clothes; he looks like a little lost English schoolboy gone berserk, like a Just William who'd suffered himself to study the arcane arts and be possessed by fell spirits. I've always thought he was rather cute when he was young (call me crazy if you want to).
RIP RIP RIP RIP... I never got to see you live. Never got to be in your presence... but I think I love you Mark. Your voice and stage presence will have an eternal mark in my life and soul. "When I am dead and gone, my vibrations will live on". Such truth. You are a true UBERMENSCH of the human race! More comparable to Captain Beefheart, in my opinion, than Johnny Rotten.
I managed it once, in 2006 in San Francisco! Not the "classic" lineup here obviously, but Mark's wizened gurning onstage by that point made me stand at the back and enjoy the still hypnotizing cacophony with a big SMILE on my face.
MES had a menacing presence on stage - I felt like shitting my pants when he looked directly at me after some knob (behind me) shouted "Play some proper fucking music!". 1986.
Can't tell a Slate what to do, they're immune to good advice. Also possibly immune to direct orders. ALSO also possibly immune to sheer brute force; I've know a few so I know what I'm talking about. Their dumbness makes them unstoppable, they are the foot-soldiers of the "nation with no imagination" the will keep on Slating around long after thoughtful and sensitive souls have been crushed down by the wheels of one damned thing or another, crushed by bad pop-culture (televee), bad politics bad economies and the sheer brutal anti-Romanticism and anti-intellectualism of this mythless age. (Jeez, it's a wonder Mark E. Smith has lived to be sixty. I suppose that's why he drinks so much).
I'd give anything to see him again.

Paul Ayers Fuck Rotten, this was MES. To me, Don was secondary.
