Really love listening to the two of you while I work!! I am a hand bookbinder and have kept a journal for 30 years, ever since my first fountain pen discovery! My question for you both...what do you write with all of those pens of yours?
I totally knew "cargo shorts" was going to be what Brian said when asked for clothing... Must be cargo shorts of holding - letting the hero carry everything he could possible need in its many bottomless pockets. Also while listening to the section on pen & ink mishaps... I was reminded of when Brian said something about how listening to employees talk about their various issues with dogs, cats, etc... doesn't make him want a pet.... and it occurs to me that somebody not into fountain pens hearing that section would wonder why we bother with them. And the answer is pretty much the same as with our pets... the joys and pleasure outweigh the challenges.
I’d love to see a visual demo showing what Drew was describing regarding how he changes up his writing and nib position when using a stub nib in confined space.
about ink spillage, I have six cats and I am PARANOID about ink disasters so it's literally a production for me to ink up a pen--make sure I"m alone. Double check. Get the cleaned pen and paper towel out. Check again for cats. Get ink bottle out. One more check. Uncap ink bottle. Find cat hidden underfoot. Get rid of cat. Squat down and eyelevel to the ink bottle sloooowly fill up. IMMEDIATELY cap ink bottle before doing anything else. Worked so far! Only inky fingers for me!
That Rotring is wild. The vibe it gives me is kinda... “Dad-core”. Like the dad who has the ultra-rugged phone case that doubles the size of the phone.
What is not often mentioned is that the reason gold was used originally was because the inks of those days were much more corrosive and would destroy steel nibs. Gold does not do that.
On parenting: Just want to let you guys know I really enjoy hearing your journeys as parents. BRIAN AND DREW!!!! You can not BELIEVE my excitement when I saw the pen on this episode's pen spotlight. I have had a rOtring Core as my EDC off and on for well over 10 years (probably more like 15? I got mine at the Ohio Pen Show *years* ago) Yours looks so new and pretty! I have worn away the plastic on the bottom of the cap. I have one with an XL nib and it's my favorite smoothest writer. And in all my years I have never noticed the beefy feed. I will never not see it now. I even went on your website to see if you got some NOS and were selling them.
A question and a suggestion, Does lubricated ink improve writing experience or just the filling process? How about including a writing sample as a small segment in each Pencast. You have so many pens, nibs and inks to show us!
The first ink sample set I got, I immediately spilled one of them all over a table trying to fill a pen. Shortly after that, you came out with your ink sample holder which I ordered and it does a great job of holding and organizing the sample vials securely.
@@kirkwilson6229absolutely! I thought about that and luckily I flew in and will only be using public transit. Gonna make sure to not cary too many valuables. Last time I was here I saw a car get broken into right in front of me. Pretty crazy what’s been happening for the past three years!
@@N1inSK will do! I’ll enjoy it extra special for you. Fun highlight first day, got to meet Drew in the flesh. I totally was star struck and just had no thoughts or words. First of all, we are ALWAYS listening. Some of us have nothing else better to watch (as I told Drew at the San Francisco Pen Show.) Speaking of the Pen Show, it was a lot of fun, especially seeing Drew there.
Drew, It's a bit expensive, but the Matador Flat Pack Soap Bar case is really awesome. You don't have to worry about it getting all gross and water in it or the case breaking, and it'll still let the soap dry even when it's closed. Big fan. I'll see you at the SF pen show this weekend!
Hi Guys, First I was stunned to hear my name on the video. Then I was both humbled and honored that you responded to my question on air. When your started to talk about the champagne pockets I was laughing so hard I couldn’t follow what you were saying. I would rewind, play the video, laugh and have to rewind again. Finally, I paused the video so I could enjoy my laugh. Then the fun continued with the interpretation of the question. You got it right and went beyond. In addition to the fun, you provided a comprehensive and professional response. Thank you very much. I started as a subscriber. Now I and a fan of both your store and videos. I received my first purchase last week and was very impressed with the quality of the things I purchased and the careful packing of the items I purchased. Beginning to end It was a great experience. I am comfortable that I can purchase all my fountain pens needs with great confidence. Generally speaking purchasing online can be a hit or miss experience. It is really nice to find a company where you can buy with confidence. I already have a second order in the works.
I am so early! Love these videos. :) A couple days ago, I bought my first "mid level" pen - a Lamy Vista! It's also my first European pen and I'm surprised at how much I love the EF nib. Prior to that, I've mostly used Platinum (a Plaisir and several Preppies) and a Wing Sung 3008.
Would you believe that the Rotring Core has been on my wish list for a while now? It's like a fountain pen for someone in Battlestar Galactica -super cool in the craziest way possible.
So I watched the pencast straight through. I thought about a bunch of things on which I wanted to comment. But, I only remembered two of them! I should take notes. Anyway, I wanted to say that it is Pelikan that tips their steel Italic nibs. Maybe someone else does as well,. But I checked my collection, and the Italic steel nibs are tipped. The other thing is: Puce Cargo Short sticker!! Put some pens clippid on a pocket. Great show. It's nice to hear about your lives with the kids growing up. And how school has changed! 50+ years ago when I started Junior High, there was no time during an evening to go and figure out where my classes were going to be. We just were expected to show up the day after Labor Day and find our classrooms from pages taped to the wall! Anyway, good show! I remembered! Taccia Urushi pens have the spring loaded inner cap, too!
Google Dale Irby. He was a PE teacher in Dallas who wore the same outfit every year for 40 years for school pictures. It started when he accidentally wore the same outfit his 2nd year then his wife dared him to keep doing it. There is a picture of him over the years wearing his cream shirt with a brown vest. It's also fun to see how he aged. So rock on, Joseph! Wear that outfit and those socks! 🤩
Hahaha! I watched this whole thing straight…and I need to be at work in two hours. Yes I noticed that their are a lot of new sample packages…thank Rachel for doing that! Thanks for another great video!
In my early teens, about 20 years ago, one of my arts teachers had the Core in the fountain pen and rollerball (?) versions in a matching case. I think his set had bright red accents. He had the coolest handwriting I'd ever seen and was actually super friendly and would let interested students try his fountain pen. So maybe the Core has cool middle-school art teacher vibes? 😂 Thanks for unlocking a 20 yo memory guys!
Note to self: don't take a swig of pop as Drew is reading out puce cargo shorts, thankfully no one was sitting near me..ha ha! You are both so fun, I listen while on my walks, and I learn and laugh so much. Also Drew, Hobonichi released A6 and A5 covers in Back to the Future themes including cover on covers. Japan release only at the Loft. I thought you would enjoy that.
I confess I nodded off for a while, then awoke to Drew talking about a dragon, magic school bus and a Megalodon....it took me a second to figure out if I was indeed awake or having a really weird dream 😂😂😂 It was just a long day, I promise it wasn't the Pencast that sent me to sleep. Enjoying watching a second time!
My pen once had a 'tude and burped up several large blobs, not usually too huge a mess, but it was blue ghost and I forgot the ink was on my desk rag and used it again shortly after. When I switched back to a blue ghost edit I was in for a glowing mess. It was both awful and hilarious. I sent my other most OCD friend a picture, so he'd know there's apparently invisible messes sob/lol
Hi Guys!: Another entertaining episode! Hope you are having a great time at the San Francisco show, Drew! LOVE the idea of a Fountain Pen Hall of Fame!
Ink sample bottle hack to avoid messes: To give them more stability when filled, I place each one inside an uncapped plastic container that used to hold a 35mm film canister. (This assumes one has held onto those old canister containers.) PS: I'm now envisioning a puce cargo shorts sticker, maybe with an enchanted fountain pen in a pocket.
I had a spare piece of plastic pipe, and I glued some washers to the base. With a small lump of blutac, I've been able to use it for barrels I'm eyedroppering, sample bottles, and even part-filled cartridges or converters while I've been working on the pen.
Hi Drew, it was nice to meet you Saturday at the SF Pen Show. Thank you for the corgi sticker. I got a chuckle when a woman approached you calling you Brian. Maybe next year you can drag Brian along. Brian, you missed a good, but jammed packed show. Do either of you like Dippin Dots?
QUESTION: With your discussion of threaded vs. snap caps, I thought maybe this was the right time to pose my question. I've had a Monteverde Invincia for six or seven years - for the first few years, it wrote great, no problems. But for the last few years, no matter what ink I put in it, it would *not* write by the next morning. I know it has a single turn screw cap, and because of this discussion today, I checked to see it if was loose. Doesn't seem to be. I have taken this pen apart, brass-shimmed it, soaked it, Drewlet brushed it, and nothing has worked so far. Do you all have any idea what the problem could be? BTW, I'm Team Drew, cleaning pens out after two or three weeks. I always use a bulb syringe, and never use shimmer or high sheening inks. Any help is greatly appreciated. Love you guys and the Pencasts. Thank you for all your hard work!
Have you tried sucking on your cap like you would suck on a straw to see if air is getting in? Also, you could fill the cap with water to see if there is a leak.
@@JerryBearry Yes, I believe it is the problem. I could easily blow air into and out of the cap. I'm not sure if the opening is from the finial or from where the clip attaches to the cap. Thank you again for your help!
@@donnarion1147 At this point, more out of curiosity than anything else, I would fill the cap with water to see where the leak is. I looked and noticed that your pen is quite heavy. Has it been dropped once or twice over the years?
Great pencast as usual! I also found the iridium last minute fact very interesting, enough to stop what I was doing and look it up! And Brian, my back balcony really needs to be sprayed, if you ever come up to southern Quebec, bring your spray thing!🤷♀☺have a good week to both of you!
You guys bring this weird pen up that I haven't thought about or seen anywhere in decades. I bought a Core back in the 90s--or maybe even the 80s. I remember I got it out of the package, picked it up to write with it and reacted like Drew did. I gave it away. I am slowly purging and packing for a move next year and decide it is time for another break from the pencast. (I usually watch in sections.) I’m going through my art and craft room…and I find a container of old pens and empty pens that were waiting for refills that got misplaced from the rest of my pen supplies…and there lying in that small bit of treasured chaos is a huge orange and gray Core fountain pen!! What are the odds?! I honestly thought I gave it away. LOL! Proof of how hard it is for me to part with my pens. I also found my two Parker T-ball jotters I bought in high school, too! (I’m 72.) I can’t get over the coincidence of this. Really has me chuckling when I think about it. Thanks, Guys! You made my night. 😊
Your budget lists are good, but having bought many of those pens (or near-equivalents) in my first year of collecting, I would say that early on, accessories give more bang-for-buck than pens. Take just a Lamy Vista and a Monteverde MVP with Omniflex, then add some spare Lamy nibs and a converter, a Kaweco Twist & Out, a bunch of ink samples, and a bulb syringe; with that, you can explore different cartridges and bottled inks in converter and eyedropper, stub and flex nibs, full-size demonstrator and pocket pens, and keep everything nice and clean. That should keep anyone busy until they decide which gold-nib pen they want to get first!
Oh man now I gotta keep an eye out for Drew’s Retro 51 😅 Everything youve had a hand in designing is SO up my alley so I cant imagine this will break the streak
Shiver me timbers, we now know what it is! And just in time for International Talk Like a Pirate day on September 19. Arrrrrrrrrrr! Avast ye scurvy dogs and check it out!
the madlibs segment was really fun! What a great idea. It inspired me to create a few custom mad libs for my friend and it generated a lot of laughs - thanks!
Rotring is a great old brand. I wish they still made many fountain pens today. I have the Core Lyceum. The light green one. Very unique pen, in an endearing, good way. The weird grip section is actually very comfortable to hold. My forefinger rests entirely along the section and it feels just fine. The nib is labeled XL which is again strange, because it’s neither a large nib, nor writes a broad, bold line. But it’s very smooth and reliable, with a distinct but nice feedback. Now, the only problem I have sometimes faced with my Core is ink flow issues - both with the converter and the short SI cartridges. It annoys me no end. But I’ll always keep the pen because it’s unique and kind of lovable.
@@pacamanca ..To each our own, indeed. But I meant it, too. It’s a weird, fun and great pen, all round. It cost me just $60 on Amazon. It usually used to be even cheaper than that.
The biggest mess I've had was with the first bottle of ink I ordered. The store I ordered from shipped a Waterman bottle, in its thin cardboard box, with a huge bottle of multivitamins in a padded envelope. The post office delivered it tied up in a plastic grocery bag filled with a broken cap, a disintegrated padded envelope, a disintegrated box, and a whole lot of dripping green ink. And I couldn't just throw it out. By the time I was done, I was green, my porch was green, my kitchen was green. My cat was green. Everything was green. That's when I started looking for a place that would actually package the bottles properly, and someone directed me to Goulet Pens.
Attn: Brian - Regarding those fat drops of ink - you're certainly not alone. I've found that blotting them with a folded tissue is the best way to deal with them. Don't wipe, just blot to let the tissue/Kleenex absorb the most of it. Edited to note I meant wadded ir crumpled tissue so it's as dense as possible. Couldn't think of thr right word which made the Mad Libs section even funnier to me.
I have the Rotring Core and the "wings" are there to make sure the convertor/cartridge is held securely. As you tighten the barrel the internal parts of the wings clamp on. The pen is rugged and meant to be carried around, and this is meant to ensure the cartridge doesn't get displaced. Unfortunately, I have the medium nib which is very wet. Keep meaning to change it.
INK BURP? Question- I'm writing with no issues when a large droplet of ink will burp out of the feed leaving a splot on my paper. What causes this and what can I do? It usually happens with my TWSBI pens.
The CORE pen makes me think it is a fountain pen that wants to be a Makita power tool. 😂 Worst ink mishap so far: eagerly filling a pen with a sample of the new Ferris Wheel Press "Song of Scarlet", only to have a hand spasm make me clench up and fling the sample bottle onto the floor, hitting my white shirt and jeans on the way down. I cried over the ink and spent the next hour trying to hand scrub it out of my shirt and pants.
At about the 27:10 time mark, Drew says that the Platinum Preppy has a great seal on its cap. ANd yes, it does! I had one in my pocket for taking notes for a YEAR and it never dried out on me. There is one drawback to the Preppy however: because it’s a snap cap that relies on friction to stay sealed, after a year of capping and uncapping 10 - 20 times a day (I take a ton of notes!), the little bumps on the section and the inner ring of the cap wore out to the point of not being able to stay in place. I had to buy another Preppy at that point. I still have the Preppy with the worn out cap. I’m sure I’ll find a use for it … perhaps I can use it as a dip pen to test inks! The loose cap/weak seal will no longer be an issue.
On the Japanese packaging of Preppy, they actually mention it will not dry up for 2 years, there is even a chart comparing it to a traditional mechanism.
Tangential, extraneous, superfluous, extemporaneous, puce, pangaea.. I learned a lot of advance English vocabularies in one episode! 😂 switching around between RUclips and google to find out the meaning. Thank you, guys! This is fun! The pen cast is always something to look forward to!
I love the "sneaky ink" idea Drew -hopefully it isn't a logistical nightmare lol. Speaking of Emerald of Chicken, I just got my first sample from you guys last week. It seems like a "required" must-try for someone to call themselves a fountain pen hobbyist. Same with Baystate Blue. With that in mind, I have 2 questions: 1) Are there other "must-try" inks besides EoC and BSB? 2) Do you have a dedicated person that makes the BSB samples, possibly wearing a hazmat suit to keep the ink from staining everything and spreading into all areas of your building? I've been worried about staining a pen with BSB, so bought a dedicated Preppy to try it out. You guys are awesome, thanks!
This was an especially interesting pencast. I love snap caps and wondered if recent drying out on Metros were the prob or was it the ink. Or using cartridges instead of converters.
My best sealing pen is a snap cap. Rotring 600. Left it for 18 months and it wrote straight away. I also have two Edding snap cap fountain pens that I picked up in an obscure stationery store over twenty years ago that never dry out and I have never had to clean. Just pop in a new cartridge. They fire up every time and I know when I need to pop in a new cartridge. Longest I have left them unused is about 12 months.
I had a rotoring core years ago - the light bluish one, I loved it it was quite comfy when writing but at that time I needed chunky pens to help tame my spidery handwriting. Thanks to you two and your pen advice I can now write better with more 'normal' sized pens. I wish I still had that pen though its either lost or in a bag in the loft so as good as!!. Thanks for your show - keep up the evil tempters role of making me buy even more pens!!! Not from you though - please set up a UK or EU version of your store.
If I assisted Drew with Lamy, I'd establish an adult division which (1) offered the safari with round grips. Perhaps an R&D department for ergonomic lamy grips, e.g. resin with no finger sliding off the end. And figure out how to make smoother nibs for the kids and adults.
A PEN PAL club (or other such concept) is a terrific one…in the days before email and Facebook I corresponded by post all the time with friends who moved away, and had pen pals in some other countries as well. Having recently gotten back into fountain pens, and not being a diary-keeper I’d love to have a good excuse to do a lot more handwriting, and a real reason to acquire new pens and inks, than I do. Get to it boys!!!!
I’m so sad!! 😭 I just placed an order yesterday and I’m just now listening to the show. I could have tried out the chicken ink. 😆 Great show, as always, guys!
You made me remember the first day of 9th grade in the new high school. The original building was an octagon with a center open air court. Then they added on a two-story cube attached by two long, covered hallways. I had been warned that freshmen were sometimes stuck in the round of the old octagon, unable to discern the doors leading to the new part of the school. I thought, "How absurd! Not me.". When I passed the gym for the second time, I was horrified to know I was also stuck in the round of the old building. I still occasionally have nightmares where I can't find the way out.
I think the Preppy does have the Slip and Seal or at least something of equivalent quality. I know the people over at JetPens actually tested the claim that it wouldn't dry out by putting a Preppy in a drawer for a year, and it wrote perfectly when they finally pulled it out. They did a whole video about it.
I think I have 2 of those Rotring cores somewhere in my stash of pens. Found them in an art supply store long ago. I was going to college then and different (weird as some like to refer to it) has always been part of me. My first pen was a Montblanc diplomat (broad) after seeing Reagan sign something with it (I think it’s referred to as #149 now). Found it at a Macy’s of all places. It’s also somewhere with those Rotrings. You’ve brought back old memories.
On capping, I notice you didn't mention magnetic caps, like the Monteverde Ritma which I just bought recently, assuming the magnetic bond won't deteriorate, is really effective and has a high quality feel. It also posts beautifully. I bet it won't dry out as fast as a Safari (in fact I inked both at the same time with the same ink (Emerald of Chivor), and the Safari has already dried out in about two weeks (i'm guessing).
Rotring Core Lore: the TCN stands for Technor, which is the version you got. Each version of the Core had a name, colorway, and motif. After learning about this pen from your podcast I found a shop in London that still sells them (new in box!) and got a Balium Core. It is orange-on-orange and where your Technor has circuitry designs as the motif, the Balium has tribal tattoos. It's either the best or worst depending on your perspective.
I want a Benu but can’t decide on nib. The writing samples on web are very similar in medium and fine. I have Visconti Mythos fine and medium and Monteverde Medium, Lamy safari medium. Which of these pen nibs is Benu most like?
I've once put a vacuum filler pen down a Diamine 30ml bottle, not realizing the pen was too thick and completely blocked the bottle opening. When I pushed down the piston, air had nowhere to go and a whole lot of ink gushed out.
That collar on the Rotring surely locks the converter in place if you pull it back before putting the barrel back on. As far as messes go, I once had to shoot ink out of a fountain pen (just like in the old cartoons, although I had a plunger style converter instead of a lever) onto the pants of the store owner's father in order to get him to go home and change them, which they were in dire need of.
Turning the stub nib 90° to write with small handwriting in small spaces was a thing that I thaught only I was doing! Even reverse nib writing also sometimes contains the flow pretty well. Now the questions: 1. what is/are the specic design feature/s that is/are required for a pen to be a successful eye-dropper pen? Long finned feeds, a seperate ink reservoir in the nib section to prevent burping, o rings, si grease etc? 2. How to disassemble and clean hooded nib fountain pens like for example Hero?
Thanks for the good conversation. Today has been a challenging parenting day, so I especially appreciated the laughs with your parenting stories. ❤ As for inky messes, I made a comic last year about my one mess. I just un-archived it & tagged you on instagram... 😇
Top 5 pens I would recommend for beginners to get a full experience (must be less than $60, purpose is for experimentation and finding out what you like): - Twsbi Eco: try piston filler, demonstrator - Kaweco Sport: try refilling cartridge using ink syringe, find your favorite color, check if pocket pens are for you - Lamy Al-Star: try cartridge converter, nib replacements can let you test out all nib sizes to see what’s your favorite - Twsbi Mini: check if pocket pens are for you, twists to post, removable nib unit - Pilot Metropolitan: see if heavy pens are for you - Bonu Pilot Kakuno: great nib, reliable, demonstrator
Dang! Missed seeing Drew at the SF Pen Show on Friday. Then again, trying to find parking was insane, so I may have not been as perceptive as usual....
#TGIF Pencast day! Really nice episode, I really enjoyed it, so thanks for that. Your CEO development programs are topnotch, but please, get both your research departments working on a pen with a "1-minute cleaning" button. Oh, and "puce cargo shorts" is definitely my new phrase for trying pens and inks, thanks Brian (and Drew for the inspired voice).
My worst ink mess involved an ink sample, probably tipped. My hand was dripping in a dark blue and got it all over a pair of pants that I only wore twice. I tried everything to get it out with no success. What a mess. I now use a candle holder to put samples in when trying to fill a pen or syringe so it can't tip over. Loved the fantasy story. I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes. Brian's going to elect the Lamy 2000 into the Goulet Fountain Pen Hall of Fame. I think he talks about that pen more than anything else. Turkey Hammock!
As a segue on your Lamy discussion, at what price point do you see sales drop off (sales, not revenue)? Is the price vs. number sold a straight line or a bell curve? Also, do see an uptick on the sales of pens highlighted on your pen casts? I must admit I’ve bought a few after seeing them on your show.
Really loving that surprise segment! Drew's narration especially. You guys are so fun, you deserve everything in the world!

Agree, excellent question. I'd like to add, what does the audience do with their pens. Art, journal, daily things, etc.

"Fueled by comfort" is my new motto. I need to get that on a tshirt or something.
I always love the energy in these podcast/videos. ❤ Where did you get the ghostbusters shirt with the og characters?!? Love it! 😊
I also must know this!!!
Also - I love Brian's shirt. ;)
Would you believe that the Rotring Core has been on my wish list for a while now? It's like a fountain pen for someone in Battlestar Galactica -super cool in the craziest way possible.
"Home Depot pockets..." to hold all of Brian's hammers Great chat guys, I always look forward to these.
Oooh that new TWSBI is looking very nice! 😍 I wasn't going to buy a pen this paycheck but who am I kidding? 😂
I thnk the yellow thing inside the Core is a locking mechanism to hold the cartridge / converter in place when it's pushed forward.
Almost certainly. It seems like a brilliant idea.
"these paper towels are not absorbent!"
Brian: you had the Lamy toilet paper RIGHT THERE! I need to see it actually get used. Please?
Love the format, you guys are so much fun!
I had 3 pencasts to catch up on and I'm not sure if my husband was more horrified or impressed by my dedication ❤ best part of my Saturday!
You are both visionary CEOs. Lamy 2000 Oversize is brilliant!
To whoever gave Brian the core pen, thank you!! I needed to see that monster.
Invisible messes.... things just got extra! 😂
(This assumes one has held onto those old canister containers.)
PS: I'm now envisioning a puce cargo shorts sticker, maybe with an enchanted fountain pen in a pocket.
@@JerryBearry No, that's one thing I haven't tried. I'm off to do that right now! Thanks!
@@donnarion1147 You're welcome! I'm curious to hear whether or not that could be the problem.
Can I just say...Drew's Ghostbusters shirt has been giving me major happy vibes!!
I can’t get over the coincidence of this.
Oh ! Just great, Brian! You broke it! Ahhh man .... Love this show!
LOVING both of your shirts this week!
the madlibs segment was really fun!
Your description made me laugh 😂 I personally think it’s an ugly a** pen, but to each their own!
@@pacamanca ..To each our own, indeed. But I meant it, too. It’s a weird, fun and great pen, all round. It cost me just $60 on Amazon. It usually used to be even cheaper than that.
The Rotring looks like somebody sawed off one of the handlebars of a bike and made it into a fountain pen
I just ordered a Pilot Decimo today, and I agree it needs more colors/designs
Love the shirt Brian! What would you say is the Kamehameha of matte fountain pens?
Also, seriously a corgi can be a mascot for anything :P
1) Soft serve isn't ice cream. 2) My order already shipped but you guys are super nice to devoted listeners than stay for the whole shebang.
I ENJOYED THE STORY XD TY !
Worst ink mishap so far: eagerly filling a pen with a sample of the new Ferris Wheel Press "Song of Scarlet", only to have a hand spasm make me clench up and fling the sample bottle onto the floor, hitting my white shirt and jeans on the way down.
Pencast stats:
Average length of video: 1 hour, 54 minutes, 43 seconds
Total length of playlist: 8 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes, 19 seconds
I love the "sneaky ink" idea Drew -hopefully it isn't a logistical nightmare lol. Speaking of Emerald of Chicken, I just got my first sample from you guys last week. It seems like a "required" must-try for someone to call themselves a fountain pen hobbyist. Same with Baystate Blue. With that in mind, I have 2 questions:
1) Are there other "must-try" inks besides EoC and BSB?
2) Do you have a dedicated person that makes the BSB samples, possibly wearing a hazmat suit to keep the ink from staining everything and spreading into all areas of your building? I've been worried about staining a pen with BSB, so bought a dedicated Preppy to try it out. You guys are awesome, thanks!
Not a teal fan but I do have an empty cartridge that is just for Bay State Blue lol.
@@blktauna a good idea for sure :)
This was an especially interesting pencast. I love snap caps and wondered if recent drying out on Metros were the prob or was it the ink. Or using cartridges instead of converters.
The deck and fence look great.
Threaded caps are annoying, but never deal breaker. Never factors into my decision if I want a certain pen or not.
You guys 🤣 Not a week goes by without double entendres!. This week, Drew going hard on his piston with the fluid flying out the hole!!
My Waterman is a snap cap. I have had this pen for over 20 years and it has never failed to stay secured.
Every time this comes up Brian says it's not a Slip-n-Seal and Drew just can't believe it. :)
When I pushed down the piston, air had nowhere to go and a whole lot of ink gushed out.
for the bubble, best technique is to "pop" your lips at it, like when you say an exaggerated: soda POP! but you have to bring your face pretty close
A baby doodoo colored eco would actually be awesome. A little green, a little brown. I am in!
Before I even start this video... 2.21 hours?! Is it my birthday? Did Christmas come early? Ok, settling in for what I KNOW will be quality youtubery.
Madlibs, that was fun! :) Looking forward to Hall of Fame, my guess, Pilot 823. Thanks for that weird Rotring. O_o
Thanks for the good conversation. Today has been a challenging parenting day, so I especially appreciated the laughs with your parenting stories. ❤
As for inky messes, I made a comic last year about my one mess. I just un-archived it & tagged you on instagram... 😇
Top 5 pens I would recommend for beginners to get a full experience (must be less than $60, purpose is for experimentation and finding out what you like):
- Twsbi Eco: try piston filler, demonstrator
- Kaweco Sport: try refilling cartridge using ink syringe, find your favorite color, check if pocket pens are for you
- Lamy Al-Star: try cartridge converter, nib replacements can let you test out all nib sizes to see what’s your favorite
- Twsbi Mini: check if pocket pens are for you, twists to post, removable nib unit
- Pilot Metropolitan: see if heavy pens are for you
- Bonu Pilot Kakuno: great nib, reliable, demonstrator
Speaking of snap-cap vs screw-cap... the Franklin-Christoph model 20 "Marietta" has an amazing friction fit cap. Perfect seal every time.
What a shirt Brian!!
Writing with a Core is super comfortable, plus you have a better perspective of your writing since your fingers are behind the nib.
Candle holder is a great idea!
Great video! Thanks!
