Trini from Mighty Morphin died in a crash, Cole from Wild Force is in jail till 2023. And I forgot the other one but he also died a little while ago. Maybe we could see them only morphed using the Sentai footage. I’ve never really seen Sentai so idk if anyone from their older shows are gone as well. Either way, that’s still a pretty cool idea that I’m sure generations of people could all get behind.

      Kamen Rider has done the same thing.

  • @EnerKaizer
    @EnerKaizer 5 лет назад +484

    The issue is suprisingly simple: The show has lost its focus.
    If you compare the more recent shows to, lets say, season from the 2000s or, heck, the 90ies, you can clearly feel the difference in approach to the audience. The newer shows try to appeal to the age group 6 and lower, while the older ones went for 6 and up, and this is were the problems originate from. Bandai and Toei wanted to widen their target demographic by aiming Sentai to a younger audience then Kamen Rider because they thought that these two shows would bite each other in merch-sales if both went for the same demographic. This however hurt Sentai a lot just like you explained. The thought-process of "Make it simpler for younger children" created a giant rift. Older/ Long-time fans got irritated by that change of direction, and the show couldn't get the wanted younger audience because it didn't take them seriously as well. Best example beeing me, Toqqer allmost made me quit the franchise entirly and I know a lot of other fans who felt the same. I know Fans who live in Japan, and even they were shocked when the infamous fourth episode aired (That's the one were the legendary Train-schlong originated from that legit also killed even the tiniest chance of Toqqer ever getting a PR adaptation).
    You can make a good show and tell a good story even if you write it for little children, the secret for that is to take them serious as well which is what Sentai didn't do. Instead we get even weirder and weirder shows with more and more questionable humor and dumbed down storys. LuPat started with such a strong premise but failed because it stagnated completly allmost instantly. I know that sounds weird, but kids are more likely interested in a action-series if they can invest themselfs in it. Give them a good story with great characters that makes it fun to follow their adventures and, shocker! they might want to get the toy-versions of the heroes they like to follow.
    But on that note, the toys have the same issues as the show. The designers were forced to simplifiy them more and more over the years, and they finally had reached a point that a lot of people thought was just an inside-joke of the fan community. The robots became just litteral bricks with arms attached to them. This is also what made kids loose interest in Sentai, they don't get to really play with the figures anymore. They just get to stack 3 different coloured blocks on top of each other, and thats it. And, unlike lego, that stack is the only real configuration you get out of them, making them feel very limited on their own. Compare that to, for example, a gattai-robot like Flash-King. That figure is now allmost 25 years old and is yet so straight forward and complex while still beeing simple. It's a very easy transformation, but you still have to pull and fold over enough parts to keep it fun and engaging while you assemble him. That is what's missing from the modern designs in Sentai. These toys are action figures, but they are puzzles as well, and that part gets thrown away for a gimmick nobody will care about in about 2-3 weeks after release on a constant basis. Make kids wonder ""How do these 3 objects form that robot???" and give them a amazing solution while also giving the robot a great design. That's the magic of super sentai, and I hope Bandai maybe remembers this one day...

Sentai however have problem with the main character they always pick either hot-headed idiot, easygoing idiot or happy-go-lucky idiot and it is very annoying in each season (with a few exception but I'm not going to list them). After that, the suits look horrible. The cops and robbers suits looked as if they were made before Goranger. The zords had gone downhill after go busters. Fix the suits and the zords. Jetman is great for its story, characters, drama, and toys. It is widely considered one of the best or the best Sentai in many circles. I am surprised they never tried this formula again.
    I think the older Sentai series from 1979 to 1993 (excluding Zyuranger) are the best series. They have darker stories and exciting peril. The current Sentai target a young demographic of around six to ten years old. These recent series are childish and lack serious peril.

    • @ShintaReviews
      @ShintaReviews 5 лет назад +2

      Larry: Carranger did horribly with audiences though. And moreover: Carranger wasn't a parody or satire. People just stabbed that label on it to try and dismiss it's severe narrative issues; after it started dropping its comedy in it's latter half did it actually start to do better, disregard that though, and it was doing worse episode-by-epiosde than Ohranger the prior year, whose lower viewership had an excuse in the show being screwed over by a terrorist attack making them change that show into a farce. A Parody series at this point, when the farcial elements of sentai that break the setting are a significant part to why Super sentai's done so badly since Kyoryuger ended (on top of the horrible leads we've kept having in Tqoger onwards), would do more to kill it than draw people back.
      As for Lupat doing better in ratings...again, it didn't. While it's in the margin of 'lost audience due to population stagnation', the final ratings average tabulated to 2.9%. Kyuranger, which I found a MUCH worse series averaged out to 3% viewership, according to data accumulated from the Atwiki and several other sources that keep track of the numbers; and Lupat also did rather poorly in sales...though I've yet to find someone who's stated an exact figure sadly. Lupat's big issue that pushed people away was the insistence on the faction antagonism that was the show's entire selling point, as there was little in-narrative reason for it to exist without one side or the other coming off as horrible, unappealing people as a result of it--the lupinranger on average coming out on top as more popular because they were rarely the aggressors in the feud--and that hurt the show immensely as if you don't have characters who will appeal to the audience in the forefront...why should people bother watching? Sentai versus events (And by proxy toei's other super hero crossovers) where they have the various teams fighting each-other historically have always done badly in comparison to ones where they do a straight teamup or one group is working to rescue another from brainwashing, so insistence on maintaining that gimmick is one of many aspects to why it backfired.

    Great video! However, I’d like to hear your opinion on one thing: Since Sentai these days is typically targeted to kids aged 3-5, do you think Japan’s birth rate decline is another possible factor to Sentai’s troublesome toy sales lately? Japan’s birth rate has steadily decreased every year since the early 1990s but I know that number doesn’t always go hand-in-hand with Sentai toy sales since, for example, Gokaiger and Kyoryuger were big hits in 2011 and 2013. But with where Sentai is now after Toqger, maybe Japan’s decreasing birth rate is finally impacting Sentai’s toy sales.

    • @LostInTokusatsu
      @LostInTokusatsu  5 лет назад +19

      Thanks! I definitely think the birth rate is having an impact. I took a look at the Bandai Namco sales charts they released a few days ago and all their big sellers are popular with both kids and adults. (Dragon Ball and Gundam being the big ones) While there is definitely an adult fanbase with purchasing power, I think the fanbase is overwhelmingly skewed towards the target demographic. I think it'd be an interesting idea to experiment with a show that can be seen as for the entire family as opposed to being just for kids. (which is the perception of most toku shows these days)

      If they're focusing to catch toy sales than rating, then it's almost 100% that it'll be cancelled.
      I mean back to Power Rangers in space, they set to cancel the series by the end of the season hence why zordon was killed off and whole villain get purified. But because the high rating they got for the finale (and most of the fanbase dub in space finale was the best power rangers finale of all time) Saban decided to continued on to Lost Galaxy. They don't think about the toy sales, they botched up for the rating.
      The difference between japan and america was japan pulls more to the toy sales while america more to the rating. And with hasbro taking the ownership of power rangers, bandai japan would obviously getting lower sales figure than before.
      Another factor is that kids these days don't (really) buy toys anymore. If they do they more interest to lego or playdoh. Because all toy they played is just on their hand. They could just take their parents phone to search a game rather than buying it. Something that japan kind a hit and miss with it (Even lupat game for switch were very awkward for me)

    Kamen Rider and Sentai have been far too reliant on the collectible noise maker toy. Instead of making a show where the suits are cool and the robots are good you have them based around a gimmick. This doesn't help you throughout the year if people think the gimmick sucks. Nowadays, younger generation just dont get into Tokusatsu anymore, i have been to Japanese elementry school during my field trip, i saw more Yokai monster, Pokemon eta. Couple of University students in Japan who grew up with Toei expressed that Sentai stories are getting too amateur and boring for them to enjoy compare to Kamen Rider at the very least has some good developement.
    They also suffer broadcasting time problem, their air time is 7:30AM which people tend to have hard time to wake up in nowadays is kind of a dead zone for any children show until they change to 9:30 AM.

    Yeah I would say the mecha toys could be a big factor. Whether it's unappealing designs (especially in combinations) or just how the toys are designed in general. Sentai mecha always have the articulation of a brick and combining just resorts to swapping out limbs. Recently I've been seeing a lot of these other mecha toys like Tobot V and Dragon Force and I feel like Sentai should try and take a page out of their books when it comes to their robot designs. Ryusoulger's mecha at least is trying to up it's play feature by have so many different ports that you can create far more combinations than the show probably could.

Toei was so desperate to save the series that they threw the guy who was helming the series at that time out, ironically, over to Super Sentai so he didn't mess up Go! Princess.

      Precure was in risk of dying two times during its history, one during Splash Star (which Yes! 5 saved with the new concept of 5 cures) and other during Yes! 5 GoGo (which the combination of Fresh+All Stars 1 came and saved again), after all that the franchise established itself and now is considered a household name... Even if some seasons like HappinessCharge really underperformed in ratings/toy sales, Precure wasn't at risk of dying like before.

    I have said it once and I will say it a million more times: Super Sentai needs to change up its formula and for the love of god, STOP WITH THE CLUNKY MECHA.
    If you look at Super Sentai from way back when in the 80's (for example), you'll see that the mecha are extremely original in their composition, design, and transformation. And I fully realize that SS is in its 40's but if you're finding that your designs are dropping in quality, either up the ante or stop producing them, OR just return to the roots of the mecha design. The way those OG mecha hid away their vehicle forms and became a full-on robot with no kibble was brilliant! Just look at Jetman! Such a brilliant design! Five jets come together to form a seamless and flawless robot that I can honestly say I could watch forever.
    Now, as for the SS formula. They have to cut the bullshit with the role-calls and over-exaggerated physical actions. Nobody is into that, not even kids because when other shows aren't doing it, you begin to look at the show that you know and love (Super Sentai) and you begin to think, "Alright, what the fuck is going on here and what are they doing?" Happened to me with Power Rangers. The acting and sequences began to look absurdly stupid with every episode copping out and recycling the last round of events but with different villains.
    I get that it needs to do well on a commercial level but you can really see how the repetition is screwing the whole show. Just make a really ball-ass set of mecha and uniforms with an awesome concept and the rest will write itself. [Insert the rest of OP's details here].
    All I have to say is that times are changing and Super Sentai needs to change with them.

      I think Super Sentai will be at its strongest on the brink of cancellation. Remember how Jetman ended up happening? That was made to be the final season of Super Sentai due to ratings decline and disinterest. Because it was made to be the final they put everything they had into it and it ultimately became so good and so critically and commercially successful that it single-handedly saved the franchise and gave us years and years of more Sentai. Let them have this downfall, it’ll be the kick they need to bring out their A-Game to keep the franchise alive.

    A majority of these comments say they should make the modern sentai shows more serious, but guys, Super Sentai was never intended to be a really serious show in the first place. It’s meant to be a show aimed for a younger audience and the dark elements that Toei added are for the adults so that way families can watch them together. What I notice about the toyline is there seems like a pattern since around Gokaiger, collectibles that separated from mechs are only happen in odd years; Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, Ninninger, Kyuranger, and now Ryusoulger.
    In the even years, they always do either mechs double as collectibles (ToQger, LuPat), or just do mechs that not compatible with roleplay toys (Go-Busters, Zyuohger). I can see this hurt the sales with some exceptions like you already mentioned; Ninninger is much lower than ToQger despite having both collectibles and mechs as separated items.

      Kyoryuger (14.4 billion yen) actually made more than Gokaiger (13.7 billion yen.) ToQger also didn't do all that bad (12.2 billion yen) in comparison to any of it's successors which failed to even break past 10 billion (Ninninger - 7.9 Billion Yen
      Zyuohger - 8 Billion Yen
      Kyuranger - 9.3 Billion Yen)

    Maybe they can learn from what Saban and Hasbro have been doing with Power Rangers recently and have alternative forms of Sentai aimed at their older fans specifically. Power Rangers has a comic series and a new video game clearly aimed at people who grew up with Power Rangers rather than focusing on the typical target audience and it's doing really well for the Power Ranger series. Not just cause they are reeling old fans back in but aiming at an older audience is usually, funny enough, more tempting for younger audiences to be more interested in it too. If Sentai does that, it could work the same for them as well.

    I'm 32 y/o and the last sentai I watched was Gokaiger and from their I lost track, I did not know that the Sentai series went down this far. I remember watching classic sentais like Maskman, Jetman, Fiveman, and the others, those shows were really scary to some level that i had nightmares but i still liked the storyline especially in Hikari Sentai Maskman. I hope they can revive that era where it has the story that can catch the hearts of teenagers and adults like us who were born in the 80s

    I only got into Sentai recently, starting with Kyuranger, and am only now learning about all this. Honestly what you said about taking a break to do research then come back stronger I think would definitely help them. It hurts that Lupin vs Pat didn’t do as well as I really love that series, it’s my favorite Sentai so far, had some good characters and was overall enjoyable to watch. It has so much charm and style that no Sentai I’ve seen so far has. I even bought the Vs Changer and all of the Lupin Kaiser. I think one thing that would help, which Kyuranger and Lupin I thought would help but I guess not, is use more original ideas for series. Example, I was actually really wanting a medieval aesthetic for a Sentai team, the only similar one I can think of is Magiranger, and then when it was shown it would be half dinosaur I was a little disappointed. I can see why they did it now but I wish they would’ve held back the knight idea for a later series, and again do some more original concepts.

    The last great Sentai was kyoryuger. It was fun the team was great but by far the best sentai was and still is shinkenger. Every one of those team members was terrific and it was so good to see a red leader who wasn’t playing for laughs like so many of them.

      Chris-G Re: Kyoryuger- a part of me would agree while the rest pretty much cite it as the fixed point of why Sentai installments after it (barring both Zyuohger and Lupin/Pat since both had the same lead writer who also co wrote for Akibaranger): Shonen Red syndrome. While Daigo and his season's writer (Riko Sanjou of Beet the Vandel Buster and KRs Double, Fourze, & Drive fame) weren't 100% responsible, they were pretty much severely misconstrued by all three parties (i.e. Toei, Bandai, and TVAsahi) far as what would make a show a hit aside from the robos

      Kyoryuger is my favorite. Even though it focused pretty hard on King, the battles and exhibition were all top notch. In contrast, I was really disappointed with Dino Charge. They did not do Kyoryuger justice with that one.

      @ninja0329 5 лет назад +2

      @@danielwilson7193 I think Kyoryuger blows. You say that King gets too much focus is a minor thing but no its major because it takes up half of the series and completely overshadows every character leading to little to no more development at all. Not to mention how the finale is embarrassingly bad that it felt more like a parody than an actual finale. I mean the romance at the end just comes out of nowhere I mean it's hinted but it was never built up at all and we barely saw King and pinky (I barely remember her name because of how poorly her character is treated) spend any time together.

    That's exactly what happens when you try to take something aimed at adults and try to tailor it towards kids and *ONLY* kids. Super Sentai used to be dark & edgy as all get-out in most of the early seasons, but now look at it. It's the same issue with the new Power Rangers seasons, where the writers all just do away with the mature writing and story tone that the series has been using since In Space all the way to RPM, in favor of going back to the silly and wackiness of the Mighty Morphin' era. Which REALLY damaged the series' credibility. Some companies out there just don't want to accept that not everything can always be SOLELY for kids.

    My childhood TV show. I remember that, when the GOKAIGER VS GOSEIGER movie came out in 2011, I bet you that I was just 4 years old by that time. I used to love those two Sentai groups, as well as Shinkenger since they are the "Golden Age", from what I see.
    I feel a bit let down that they tried so hard to keep the series going. I really hope they succeed in that, because I don't wanna lost another part of my childhood again

    I think the fact that television is in decline is also contributing factor. The advent of streaming services like Netflix means that television today isn't that much influential as it was back in the Sentai's heyday. Toei needs to change with the times and realize that television is not a big deal anymore.
    Speaking of Sentai ratings - ever since Shinkenger rating were going down with each season performing worse than the last. And I'd like to point out that ToQger was poor over the toop goofy series ala GoOnger with the villains' designs being the only redeeming quality. The rangers were as bland as you can get and the main baddie wasn't particularly good. Same story with Zyuohger. Kyuranger and Lupin vs Pat introduced interesting concepts, but probably didn't work out for Toei and Bandai-Namco. And now Sentai's back with dinosaurs which looks more like Kyoryuger knock-off from Southeast Asia given the main color scheme and zords.
    As for Power Rangers - I think if Beast Morphers performs below the expectations set by Hasbro in the next 2 years, they'll just cancel the series once the Nickelodeon deal ends and instead focus on the rumoured Power Ranger movie sequels given that they were starting talks with Paramount for potential sequel.

      I don’t know....toqger does have some redeeming qualities. I actually like the drama between Zett and miss gritta's family. Plus Zett was the only villain successfully stealing the ranger's morpher allowing him to transform into the orange ranger. I have yet to see any other villain do that. I'll give credit where credit is due and Toqger did the villain characters right to a degree.
