The Reason Dave Dahl Of Dave's Killer Bread Went To Jail

  • Going through the supermarket aisles, you may have noticed Dave's Killer Bread and wondered how it got its name. Founder Dave Dahl actually spent 15 years in prison.
    Dahl's father had his own bakery, NatureBake, in the 1980s, specializing in handmade organic and sprouted grain loaves. Dahl says he wasn't interested in the family business in his teens. He dropped out of high school, started taking drugs, and turned to a life of petty crime, according to the Deseret News. He spent the next 15 years serving out sentences for various offenses, and worked at the family bakery between stints.
    In the early 2000's, Dahl rejoined his brother Glenn at the bakery for good. He developed a cornmeal-encrusted bread that he took to Portland-area farmers markets and named "Dave's Killer Bread." Here's the full story of why he went to jail, and how his company is giving back.

    I think his brother deserves at least half the credit for keeping the bakery going while Dave made his mistakes and served time. I think Dave's brother is probably the stable rock that the company was built on.

      Thank goodness for people like your dad and Dave. The US has regressed in terms of how prison was based reforming inmates so they could reintegrate back into society. Now it's all about punishment and society throwing up so many roadblocks where they can't get a job, can't find a place to live, etc...and blame on them for not trying hard enough. All because of prejudices and being afraid of getting sued if something happens and they blame it on them hiring an ex-con.

To work on her farm. But he ended up hanging out with motorcycle gangs I know he can't read and write he can't even sign his name. He has been in Jail more then out? He might be there now? He is on disability! And age 71 if my grandmother would have left him in school he may have turned out different? He could have made a good living! 💰 i always wondered about that? I don't know why my dad wasn't watching him instead of my grandmother? Maybe bc he was in the service & my brother his mother is not my mother! He is my half brother! But that's life. I met Dave in Seattle at PCC natural markets when I was an employee there in the early mid 2000s. He was in the bread aisle merchandising his product in our store. I was already a fan of his bread and when I got a closer look at him I said " You're Dave!" He looked just like the drawing on the package. He was incredibly humble , sweet, and real. He took time out of his day to talk to me, and I could tell with his positive attitude, humility, and amazing product , he was going to go far. I am very happy to see he has found success and helps others to overcome thier past and do the same.

      Yeah but it's a shame he sold the company and then corporate greed took over and it started to get expensive and then ...
      ... well now his bread ... a lot of it smaller than ever before and yet even pricier and it cannot all be blamed on supply chain problems because it has been proven that most corporations doubled their profits in the past year or two .
      And now with the Ukraine which is the Bread Basket to the world and supplying more wheat than anybody to the planet ...
      ... and guess what , last month it was in the news that's something like 200 million tons of wheat was being held captive by Putin in a cargo ship in the Ukraine .
      And so watch how crazy expensive everything made with wheat will get and that includes a lot of the beer out there ... not just bread or pizza dough .

The first thing that needs to change? The whole for-profit system the majority of prisons run on today. It being a for-profit system is such a conflict of interest, it blows my mind that it’s allowed and that people aren’t more up in arms about it. That for-profit prisons have certain quotas, for states to keep them occupied to a certain point is outrageous. That’s why people get thrown in prison for petty crimes, for a first crime, for almost nothing because they need to fill those beds. And that’s why certain prisons hand out infractions for the tiniest misstep, to keep you in there. I’m surprised more people aren’t angered by this.

    The fact is, Dave Dahl represents all of those who really do embrace rehabilitation. They exist, but he also isn't going to pretend there aren't those who never will. The poetic idea he took a drafting class that made that much impact proves education does help, and that there is truth to the idea that lack of education and criminal behavior are linked with some.

    • @CassieLino
      @CassieLino 3 года назад +3

      Id say its more accurate to say that he represents those who are ABLE to embrace it. Many people who come out of prison don't have anywhere to turn, hence why he hires felons, to give them the same opportunity he got. While he did do the work to get to where he is, he did also have luck on his side by having the bread business and his family to turn to so he had a platform many do not have.

      Pretty soon I'm just going to go back to baking my own bread like I used to do it's just not worth paying those prices when the truth is a lot of the corporations are lying about the supply chain problems when the truth is most corporations doubled their profits in the past year or two
