- What's happening, people! I'm back with another a-ha reaction from their 2009 album Foot of the Mountain, and this time we listen to the uplifting "Nothing Is Keeping You Here," though as you'll see, I was in two minds about the title in advance. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy another wonderful song with some soaring vocals from Morten! Cheers!

As you're going through all these albums it's great to hear tracks again that may have only been listened to a couple of times in the past. There's lots of growers in their catalogue...
A song which is rumoured to be about folk singer Nick Drake who died of an overdose in 1974. His reputation grew in the eighties ad he became a big influence on bands like Felt, Belle and Sebastian, Kings of Convenience - hence the line "You knew your day to shine, would come without you here". The beginning guitar sounds like it's going to break into Everybody's Talkin" by Nilsson. It's another bright song with rather melancholy words and it's gorgeous.
Thanks. That's awesome... Id never heard that.
Nice! I had no idea.
I love this song, it's one of my favourites ❤
It is very pleasant for sure
I get the impression that it can be a person talking to himself, and referring to himself in the second person. You are free to move on, go out into the world and follow your dreams even if everyone else is trying to hold you back.
I feel like I'm repeating myself when I like this song too. They all have their own distinctive character, their ingenious turns of phrase and music. But I'll tell you again. Fantastic song that lifts you up and carries you away - and maybe that's also a hint to the content of the lyrics?
The inspiration for the song which of course was written by Pal..was reported to be the death by overdose of folk-singer Nick Drake in 1974, after which there was speculation about whether it was purely accidental or deliberate…the words in the lyrics “the absence of a note, was all the papers wrote” certainly would back that up. Magne states “this is an uptempo song, not an upbeat one”. He’s right about that of course because of the melancholic nature of the subject matter, but once again the bouncy uptempo beat and Morten’s soaring vocals make the song seem much jollier than the lyrics suggest. It was released as a single with a really very stylish video..they really do the best videos ! It’s a track I really like to listen to, once again I play the whole album CD in my car…
Hello Matt, happy saturday I hope you are having a great weekend. Nothing Is Keeping You Here, written by Pal. This was one of the first tracks to be written for the album. It was reportedly part-inspired by folk singer Nick Drake who died from an overdose of an antidepressant called Amitriptyline in 1976. There has been a great deal of speculation as to whether the overdose was deliberate and the media’s response to the death. A- HA’s melancholy style fits the track really well. I really like the music to this track and Morten’s voice completes it. Take care 😘❤️🇳🇴❤️🏴🇺🇸 catch you on the next one stay safe
A beautiful track with some nice orchestration.
This is beautiful... This voice going high and then intantly low -it's hard to explain but I stop listening to the meaning of the words and just follow the sound of the voice, drifting away somehow. 😊❤🎵🇳🇴
Morten was born in September 1959 so he is today (2023) on his early sixties.
Third and final single release from Foot of the Mountain.
In this case I believe I prefer the more streamlined single edit to the album version.
There was also a remix that I quite enjoyed on the single release, the Steve Osborne Mix.
thanks Matt for all your a-ha reaction videos. love this song, my favourite of the album. As others have noted, great lyrics which can be interpreted as being ''sad' , combined with an upbeat tempo. The hallmark of a-ha! Yep the lyrics "Your day to shine has come without you here", just tugs at your heart. if you get a chance, listen to the version on the Cast in Steel with Bonus tracks release, which has a different melody, but leaves one with an equally beautiful feeling. It's on you-tube.
Cheers, love to hear that, and I will indeed react to that version eventually, as I believe I've been given access to the extra/bonus edition. Will investigate to make sure but I think I have access to it. :)
@@mattsnider2667 I hope someone has given you access to the Deluxe Cast in Steel, with demos and different versions of Foot of the Mountain songs. I am still taking notes... 😉 😁
Yesterday night when I was thinking what song came next in this album I got afraid it might be blocked right away, because I think it was released as a single. Well, I was happy to see it wasn't muted when I came to watch it. But weren't you going to try that disclaimer? 😉
Forgot to tell you yesterday when you first asked: yes, Morten turned 50 in 2009, but was "still" 49 when he recorded the album (it was released in June 2009 and Morten's birthday is in September). Can't wait for you to hear what he recorded in his 60s (though, of course, his voice has grown "weaker", but still so beautiful). 😊
It was so funny to hear that you are already suspecting that songs might carry messages from Paul to Mags and vice-versa. 😂 I never thought that about this one, but when you said it I realised it really seemed obvious from the title. Only, in this case, it isn’t that at all, as the lyrics show. I see that others have already pointed out what the song was reportedly inspired on, and it makes it another typical case where the sonics and apparently uplifting vocals carry a dark content. 😉 It was only in recent years that I came to know the inspiration behind the song, and it was interesting to realise what "Nothing is keeping you here" means in the context of depression and suicidal thoughts, whereas I also used to hear it in a more positive way, a sort of encouragement to dare and step out of whatever is hindering you (from following your interests, from breaking free from a suffocating situation, from making a change in your life, etc.). But there is nothing "wrong" with this interpretation, or your final interpretation of the song (which was also in this vein), because Paul himself doesn't like to give specific readings to his songs, he likes to leave them open for interpretation. 😉
Ah, I was almost forgetting to say this is definitely one of my favourites on this album, maybe even THE favourite. But, as you know, I never made a list of that. 😁
Haha, yes, I was going to try the disclaimer but my short-term memory is suspect. Thanks for the reminder. :)
@@mattsnider2667 you are so busy, how can you remember everything? But you can always count on my reminders. 😁
It is a very pleasant sounding and also melancholy song. That’s A-ha for sure.
I could see listening to these songs on an Easy Listening channel. When you just need some soft vibes and a kind of chill out day to help your mental state. Like if you’ve been stressed, angry, or sad. ❤
I have finally realised, by watching your reactions and listening to the album again for the whatever-nth time, that it sonically, lyrically and thematically ranks just almost next to Hunting High and Low and Scoundrel Days to me personally.
"Your day to shine has come without you here" breaks my heart every time. Wonderful and meaning full.
Beautifully melancholic, that’s A-ha ❤
Pure love!
Looooooooove it ❤
A song Keane would have loved to have written.
If you have access to the remixed version of this that was released as the single, it’s a much more fuller sound.
I see! Will see if I have access to that. Would be fun to react to it for a comparison.
La versión en video es mucho mejor me encanta.
This is another great track - but aren’t they all? - and one of my favourites on FOTM: has lots to like. Quality.
Morten was 51 at the time of this album. Near 57 for the next album cast in steel. And near 63 for their latest album
49, near 50, according to my maths. 🤔😉
51 años y estaba como quería 😍😍😍😍 waapo
The middle of a cracking hat-trick of songs on this album. Although also released as a single, the video (like "Shadowside") was a half-hearted, low-budget effort. For me, the heavily-remixed single version was unnecessary - although I don't have to look far in the comments to see that is not a universal view!
As I said before the opposite of what they done to shadowside as a single, absolutely butchered that for single release.
@@markwebster7435 Yeah, that didn't flow well at all. Maybe if we didn't know the original but I love Shadowside so anything they did to it would be weird.
