I'm in total agreement with you about Dalilah. She has been an awesome ambassador for our sport both on and off the track. What's crazy about all of this is the amount of depth the US has in the hurdles and sprints. Times of 52.9, 12.37, 13.00 couldn't make the team. Sydney's run here felt odd. Not in a bad way, but like unexpected. She didn't break her record by as big of a margin as her 51.41 to 50.68, but no one expected her to do it here at the trials.

I think the reason was that Sydney ran 14 steps from hurdle 2 to 5 only, 15 steps from hurdle 6 to 10. In the 2022 WR run, she ran 14 steps from hurdle 2 to 7, 15 steps from hurdle 8 to 10. If she had run the same exact pattern like she did in 2022, it would probably be even faster than 50.65. Perhaps that's why she was shock at the end.

  • @Edgar-uj9fh
    @Edgar-uj9fh 2 месяца назад +9

I expected Sydney to go for the record, and I told a friend of mine as much before the final. Over the last few seasons, that has been her modus operandi. When she ran the 200 earlier this season, she was hoping to go sub 22. When she ran the open 400, she was hoping to break Sonya's American record. The year in which she set the 400 m hurdles record at 50.68, she opened the season with a mid 51 clocking! She picks her spots, but when she steps on the track she means business.

She was on a solid 50.0 strat through 200m. 12.3, 24.4 this is what splits I would expect, and she was just hundredths over. 13.12 and 13.13 to close, that's, that's not normal. 50.0 splits would look like 12.6 and 13.0. It's like she put it on cruise control going into hurdle 6. I think her slowest segments were between hurdles 7 and 9. She was faster between 9 and 10 (4.65) and even faster in the run-in 35/40 of the run-in time is 4.57, her slow segments were 4.68!

I have to agree that Sydney does have the ability to run sub-50 in the 400 mh. She ran that backstretch pretty conservatively. She is a HEAVY favorite; but I do believe that she will pull Bol to a 50-point performance. I also agree that for the bronze it'll probably be between Anna Cockrell and Rushell Clayton. Props to ALL-TIME GREAT, Dalilah Muhammad! I would have loved to see her at the Olympics one more time.
Men's 400 m hurdles podium is set; but it is tough to predict between Benjamin, Dos Santos, and Warholm. I am just rooting for a great race! I wouldn't be surprised to see all 3 of them run sub-46.
Holloway looked good and really held his form through the end of each of his races. If he continues in this vein, he should win the gold medal. It's pretty open for the other medals with Crittenden and Roberts, as well as the Jamaicans competing for them.
The 100m hurdles is really tough to predict. Sub-12.4 all the way down to 6th place. That's a time that has won major championships! With the Americans, the Jamaicans, JCQ, and Amusan, this is definitely the toughest event to predict; so I won't even try!

Dalilah's certainly fantastic and she pioneered this new wave with the step pattern that no one thought could be done. She deserves all the praise. She helped create the GOAT. Bol ain't capable of getting anywhere near 50. She's never even run a 48 flat and barely broke 52. She's a great talent but Sydney is a once a century talent. Shamier underestimated the competition and it costs her massively. I hate that for her because she's fantastic. But she should not have run the quarters.

But Femke can definitely run 50. She has never run 48 because she hasn’t tried to. Remember that ever time Sydney has ran an 48. She was aiming at the US record. Femke has never chased a time in the 400 flat outdoors. And she has run sub 52 3 times last season. 51.4, 51.7 and 51.9. And it was her first season running 14 steps between hurdles. As an aside. Can we get more background on these athletes please? I just learned Kenny Bednarek's story and it adds so much more to how fans feel when watching him on the track. He's a dogged racer and he had a really tough childhood. It makes me wonder, did his childhood prepare him for his destiny? Or is he racing to overcome his childhood demons? It's called emotional engagement and it's the main reason we watch sports, for the drama. It means far more to most fans than comparing medals and PBs and all those stats journalists love to obsess about. Stats may be fine for those who follow team sports but for track and field, it's a personal relationship between the athlete and the fans and it's a career-long journey.

What a thrilling conclusion to the Olympic trials, with the women's 400m hurdles record being shattered! I coin McLaughlin-Levrone as a corporate runner-she is all business. I hope Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone can compete in the mixed and women's relays. Some may underestimate the mixed relays, but the objective should always be to dominate every race.
As a big fan of Rai Benjamin, I'm concerned about the lack of competition pushing him in the men's 400m hurdles. Unlike Sydney, I still need to see how he performs under intense pressure. While he gave us a glimpse of his potential a few months ago, his competitors, especially Karsten Warholm and Alison Dos Santos, eagerly await him. Alison Dos Santos is way too dangerous for my taste, and I need Rai to run sub-46s in every round (ok, I know this is not possible, just saying). I don't plan to bet against Rai, but I wish we could have seen how he handles high-pressure situations ahead of the 2024 Olympics.

Yep. Sydney like Simone is in a league of her own.

I agree . People are still to be reminded what Sydney has done and just did.

She left in the fall of 2023 to train with John Smith, but moved back to Boogie Johnson in May this year. Check the interview I did with her after the 400mH heats. She explained it.

Bassett isn't winning any medals. Trevor needs to win a medal 🏅 in order to get a deal

I think Sydney is already the GOAT in the 400mH, so I'm not sure what the point of running in Paris is? Sure, a second gold would be a legacy that will likely stand for a long time, however (speaking as one of "those" presumptuous fans LOL) I don't understand why she doesn't go after the flat 400m record? For the good of track & field those tainted records from the 1980s need to be taken down and if she is clean then she is the generational talent to do the job.
As much as I admire SML, the humblebrag about it all being in God's hands is hard to take. Sure, be Christian, you do you... but it's a little arrogant to essentially be saying that she is the chosen one! She gets those times because SHE busts her ass in training... and doesn't God also have a plan for Femke Bol?
Femke Bol is admirable for being such a grinder... she does the relays, she races indoors, she went after and took down one of those tainted 1980s records (indoor 400m), so she deserves a legacy too but will probably be the Steve Young to SML's Joe Montana.

Unless Sydney has a personal time like under 50 seconds, that she has to prove to herself should she continue doing hurdles as outside of that it makes no sense to me. She need to start dominating the other areas like the 100mh, 200m and 400m now that will put her in a completely different universe and she proves she can do it. But this 400mh to me now is just mundane and we ALL know that she cannot be challenged in the hurdles so it's boring now.
