The major problem with companies making games like this as "always online" is that the online mode should be an option. Sim City has for years been a game that you could perform all tasks solo and it's fanbase has been willing to play the game that way, but this forced online multiplayer that breaks a concept that works perfectly offline is completely frustrating. Imagine if games like Civ, Command and Conquer, or even Animal Crossing required you to play online with other players just to complete it. Most people I know would not be willing to play those games for that very reason ( I know a friend of mine who is definitely upset about Sim City and hasn't tried playing it in months). Perhaps 2K and Firaxis may learn their lesson and in the next iteration we get this as an option, not as mandatory to play... but I highly doubt it.

DarkeTribute Well to be perfectly fair, considering the potential of an infinite number of universes and thus an infinite number of possibilities, there does exist quite a number of universes where EA is a perfectly fine company... granted, these may also share the same Universes where Mojang bought out Microsoft and the Atari is the leading developing company of the gaming era, but you get the point.

SimCity was one of the first games I ever played. I had seriously bad ADHD and I couldn't really get into other games. I had Ultima and the classic Nintendo games like Mario but as much as loved those games I would only do a few levels or get to a certain point before I had to stop and go run into a wall or something. I was a weird kid... but SimCity was the first game I played nonstop. I couldn't wait to get home and keep playing it. Why? Because it did something for me other games couldn't. Up until then I had seen all the typical point and click adventure, 2D side scrolling platformer, racer shooter or beat em up. But SimCity did more than just provide a fun game, it allowed us kids to go wild with our imagination. It allowed us to do something we all love, pretend. You could imagine that you were some paragon of happiness trying to make the perfect utopia, or you could be an evil villain creating worlds only to destroy them. Or maybe you wanted to try and make the city you lived in. You were the one creating the gameplay. It gave birth to my favorite genres simulations and sandbox games. It provoked you to think forward and plan out what you needed to do, hell it's almost educational (kinda) but in a good way. It completely changed the way we look at games.
SImCity was the reason I wrote my very first article. It was a top 10 list and it actually got a decent spread and now writing gaming articles is my job, which I'm very lucky and thankful to have. Maxis would go on to revolutionize the gaming industry... only to be taken down thanks to a publishing company that's infamous for being greedy, corrupt and full of idiots. Finding out Maxis had been shut down by EA (obviously because EA destroyed their most beloved franchise) after making their worst game ever actually makes sad. EA had been a publisher for Maxis for years, but there was a change to the industry 10 years ago. Publishers realized how important they are to gaming companies. They publish, fund, advertise and own the rights. So they decided to be in charge of projects and telling the development teams what to do. The reason was so they could oversee the game development to add in new ways to make money. Paid DLC and microtransaction (pay to win) were made popular by EA. They take a game and chop off content and pieces of it before it's released so they can sell those pieces later as DLC. They cut funding from the development and put that money into advertising, why? They don't care if the game sucks, they're more concerned with people buying the game and getting more money. Gameplay isn't as important as sales to them. They've ruined so many good games, franchises and companies. Basically what I'm trying to say is....
    FUCK YOU EA

Slevin Reviews When I first playing with PCs, Simcity is the first game that I ever played(along other classic Sim Games), them I got into Simcity 2000(too bad, I only played it's demo version as well it's GBA Port), Simcity 3000(my personal favorite so far), and Simcity 4(ever since I can't run this game on whatever computer that I use, I gave up and this makes me left Simcity franchise).
when I left Simcity franchise, I got into Command and Conquer franchise(another franchise that fell victim to EA games perhaps earlier than Simcity) where I got hooked into until Tiberian Twilight comes out(this makes me goes into Warhammer 40k due to death of C&C franchise as well Warhammer 40k is source material for Dawn of War 2(a game where EALA rips off it's gameplay mechanics for C&C4), and the cancellation of 2013 C&C are further kills C&C franchise where in that year, 2013 SImcity comes out). also as a former Simcity fan, I got myself hooked into Spore game(made by the same guy that gave us Simcity) where I like it since I love playing god as well Spore is a game where I (once) die for, not to mention I like it's villain: the Grox where having Oxygen-intolerant Carnivore as Always chaotic evil species is never a bad idea as well the Grox have ultra-advanced tech.
what's do you think about Simcity build it(Android game that I currently plays)?

Slevin Reviews Amen to that! EA needs some serious competition. Thanks for sharing your story! It actually makes it all the more real how greedy EA is.
I mean, I was a huge Sim fan (still kind of am), starting back from when I was visiting a friend's house and she showed me just how cool The Sims: Unleashed was :) From then on, I was really into the first and second games, their expansions, and their console/handheld counterparts...but that was when expansions actually had interesting concepts, game-changing content that could keep you entertained for hours, and pretty awesome soundtracks (seriously, I love music from the old Sims games).
As much as I love the third game, though, the expansions were...a little sub-par for me - for every awesome addition, there seemed to be flawed "tick" just sucking the fun out of it before very long. For instance, social groups in University Life are cool in theory until your Rebel Sim starts ranting for no reason...water taxis in Island Paradise are cool until one of them gets stuck and the game lags like crazy...the punishment freakin' system, in theory, sounds realistic, but it's freakin' flawed like freakin' crazy...and don't even get me started on Pets (I'm an animal lover and this one irritates me to know end). Also...Worlds...that's all I'm saying about that.
Anyway, once I heard about all the stuff they took away from the franchise for The Sims 4, I was a bit heartbroken. I heard the game is okay, but I played a free trial version of it, and I'm sorry, but it's nothing like the old games used to be. I mean, it's more akin to one of the console titles with the crude humor and such, but not one of the PC games. I just can't justify it for the price it is.
Like I said, EA needs some serious competition, and thankfully, Sim City now has some with Skylines (that game ROCKS!).
(Sorry for the lengthy post...I kinda got carried away....)

In an era where game worlds are getting bigger and bigger and more unlimited, they should have laughed the guy who proposed putting the SimCity game in a box right out of the room. This game feels more like a more advanced cow-clicker than a game released in modern times.

The goal of turning every basic game concept into some kind of Warcraftian MMO is worth it, to their minds. And they learned nothing from this failure, they didn't even consider it a mistake.

This is why I torrented Sim City. Just download a patch that takes out the "always online" feature and find a way to be able to host a game with your friends. It makes for a much better and overall smoother experience. I don't normally promote torrenting, but for this game, I found that the torrent copy was actually a better product then the actual released game.

***** you don't give SC3 too much credit, the game don't suck, it's actually an improvement over SC2 because almost everything made it's way to this version, however there are some things that I miss from SC2, the arcology towers are gone, waterfall are gone and so the hydro electric power, stadiums were replaced with sport parks and there is no blazing fires that consume the city neither monsters, floods or airplane crashes, but in return we got neightbors to make deals with, more ordinances, different terrains and buldings sets, landmarks, a better interface, you can create your own buildings, terrains and scenarios, terraforming is better overall and bigger maps among other things, and the most important, tons and tons of fun
SC2 has it's charm, I still play it but SC3 is the one I spend most of the time playing. Now, for SC4, well, I haven't played too much, just the tutorial to see the new things and changes but I will play it soon, That region thing is simple awesome.
I don't wan't to force you to play SC3 or SC4, but you can at least try them with a more open mind, if you still don't like them, well, theres nothing to do about it, it your opinion and I respect it

    • @V340E419
      @V340E419 10 лет назад +3

Urban_Shadow_001 Thanks you, SC3 was the game I was introduced to, and fell in love with. SC4 was nice upgrade as now you could do driving missions, plus build massive citys with a whole array of transit options. Overall the series has really "grown up" but Maxis really screwed up with Simcity but we all know that was EA's doing not theirs. Hope the next one takes what was good with Simcity (roads building, graphics) and bring back some from the older games as well (bigger area, transforming, massive region to play with)

    • @shadowpumper
      @shadowpumper 10 лет назад +1

I think they can do it with this one, however they started the game backwards, they worked on the last thing of the game and now they make their way to the first thing they should worked to begin with, for example, the whole concept of working with other cities started with SC3, expanded on SC4 and exploited on SC5, they could design the game for single-player in a offline mode and it would be just fine, then they develop the multiplayer aspect of the game, wich is the same concept of the region play of SC4 but this time other people control the cities. That's the way it should be done, but they did it the other way around.
People are asking for bigger maps now and I can bet you anything that once we got the maps we are going to complain about not having a god mod to terraform our own regions and when they give us that, we're going to complain about not having enough cities in the region because they are going to limit it to 4 or 6 cities per regions and so on and so forth
SimCity 2013 is a game that needs A LOT of polish; the more they get to the core gameplay the better

You know, an offline single player game mode where you manage different cities all focused on different aspects (education, resource production, etc...) that you have to make interact and cooperate together actually sounds like a good idea, and would even justify the cities' small size... But having it be a multiplayer-only thing kinda kills it.

Yeah you are kinda right. The graphics are great, but there is some elements from SimCity 4 I miss, such as the things he mentioned and the fact that you could drive in a car by yourself :D. But still, I clearly prefer this game than SimCity Sociaty, that game sucks AS HELL!! It might be fun the first time you play it. I enjoyed it the first week I had it, but one of the main issues is you can turn the building you can place (and yes, you have to place every single building yourself) but you can only place the roads in only FOUR directions!

Since this video's comment section has become a "Bobfest" I decided to do the best that I can by clearing this up a bit...
Google launched their own social networking site named Google Plus (Google+), and nobody wanted to have a Facebook and a Google+ account simultaneously.
RUclips wanted to have better content and more bandwidth so viewers can enjoy HD videos without having to sit through immense buffering times. RUclips didn't have the necessary storage and networks to maintain the constantly growing community of content developers and accounts.
Google sought for a method to drag people to their social networking site, and RUclips needed a larger database for managing the streaming of over 10 million videos worldwide. Google has international databases that RUclips will be anticipated to occupy, and developers for RUclips bargained by connecting the Google+ site with RUclips accounts.
Even after bugging us to integrate our accounts, only a few people did. RUclips developers then restricted channel comments to Google+ users, that didn't help much in attracting users to Google+.
Recently the RUclips developers limited video comments to Google+ users, and now the number of people using Google+ is soaring due to this forced integration and undesirable limitations to those who have not integrated their accounts by now.
This isn't something that everybody agreed on, or even considered, but there's nothing that "Bob" is capable of doing when it comes to changing the mind of the RUclips developers. You will have a greater chance of proposing an easier-to-understand method for managing the integrated accounts. (Without cluttering our pages with links and promotions).
The integration was inevitable, all we can do now is suggest a better method of integrating RUclips and Google without the ASCII "Bob" comments.

_SimCity 4_… ah, the memories and ever-present threat of crashing. Seriously, it's over a decade old and I'm still having technical problems with it. It must be my computer or something, 'cause it tends to do that with every one of the Sims games I own, all the way back to the original's Deluxe Edition.
And I ended up giving up on my shoddy CD's and "invalid" activation code, so I bought the game again on Steam. It's still fun, although the modules you can add onto buildings and plumbing infrastructure being linked to the roads in this new one really would be appreciated. (Sure, I could manually lay down pipes in the same pattern as roads, but that's rather inefficient given their coverage.) Also, Jared mentioned not being able to place a park in the middle of high-wealth housing. While things like that can be done in _SimCity 4_, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work because the game says "Nope, mayor [Gameactive], you gotta have a road connection." That occasionally happens on outer-corner patches of Industrial zones that were laid out in standard form.

    • @Dovieandi
      @Dovieandi 10 лет назад +4

Nah, its not just your computer. Simcity 4 has some inherent code issues and memory leak problems. There are some fan made fixes but I don't think any of them completely fix the issue unfortunately. Just increase the time between crashes.

Oh, phew, so I'm not the only one. Out of all the games I've played on my PC, only EA games crash like that. So I've started setting a timer that goes off every five minutes and saving every time it does, plus I installed a Saver mod for _The Sims 3_ that does it automatically. Saving in of itself seems to help delay the inevitable more than what I'd expect from any third-party mods.

The tutorials make it look so easy, but the constant nagging of your advisers to expand your fire/police network, address very minor pollution problems, and a few other complaints makes it so you want to address them… and then you'll be lucky if you don't have to double your tax rates to get back into the green/black. Or, you could be like me and download a "Money Park" mod that sends your expenses into the negative billions… I found that so funny, but it really works!
Reducing funding on utilities, by the way, isn't the way I'd go since it causes them to degrade faster. I'd try my best to unlock Solar Power Plants as soon as possible since they're clean and provide more energy than the "starter" variety of power plants.

I'd never paid attention to this game, but my first impression: "they simplified things", and now I'm already angry.
YOU NEED ROADS FOR PARKS?! The game is all ABOUT freedom! EA, what the hell?
    Okay, the modules are cool.
MY goal was always to increase density, no missions needed.
WOW. THAT'S TINY. Like, the size of the CRAP^2 mobile app.
    No terraforming...
ALWAYS ONLINE? CO-OP PLAY?! I don't play Simcity to be SOCIAL, I play it because I'm a pathetic recluse! Simcity was NEVER a social game, it's for geeks, not the lowest common denominator who doesn't understand management enough to play without utter simplification!
Mining the coal is a neat concept, but would work better if you DID have a bigger map. Then you could have industrial, commercial, residential, and extraction zones.
WAIT. Airports and solar plants aren't just BUILDINGS?
Disasters being permanent ruins half the point...

I loved EA back then , but since the DLC's and other things like that came , EA became greedy and always searching to tear money out of you by selling an uncompleted game that you must complete with DLC's. The best example is , Sims 3, you buy the game for 30 to 50 bucks, get stuck with a little to do , and a few furnitures. How do you get more things to do ? Buy an expansion pack that cost around 10 to 20 bucks each, and there's a lots of thems ! And even in game , they are constantly blasting you with awesome stuff that you can buy but you can't because you don't have money or don't have more money to put in this money sucking game. I hope the gaming market isn't going for that option of DLC's and uncompleted games. I yes , I'll stick to my old video games. It's not hard to make a game that is fun and that didn't need Online , Skyrim is a great game for example, yes there is DLC's , but the don't feel necessary , I don't have them , and I still have a lot of fun and hours of gameplay without them , and i'm not considering buying them. I hope multiplayer and Online only games is the future , because it'll be aweful in my opinion.

To be honest, you needed to buy expansions packs for the Sims since the first one came out..it's just how that game is run, and I'm okay with that as I have been used to it since the beginning, I expect it.

Sim City was one of my favorite games, and one of the first builder/simulation type games I ever played. The first ever was Utopia for the Intelivision, but being on such a primitive console, it was rather limited, but Sim City, being on the Amiga, was not.
Then a decade later, I got Sim City 2000 for the PC and it was an improvement over the original. It took what was good about the original and made it better. Added new features that made me feel even more in control of a city. Then came Sim City 3000 which added to the improvements of 2000.
Finally came Sim City 4, which is my favorite of the franchise by far. It still had some issues, to be sure, but they were so minor that I really didn't care. I figured some day they'd release a Sim City 5 and fix those issues, following the pattern of expanding on existing features, fixing and fine tuning them to be ever better, adding cool new features that make the game even more fun, and fix the issues that take a little something away from the game.
But nope, we got "Sim City" instead. I'm glad I never got that thing, it's not even worthy of being a part of the Sim City franchise. IMO it oversimplifies things, and loses the city building simulation aspect that made the franchise so memorable and popular.

I have played the original DOS version of DK, and also the alpha/beta versions of a new game inspired by DK, which is very good, it's called Dwelvers and I definitely recommend checking it out if you're a fan of the 'Keeper franchise.

    • @willingsas
      @willingsas 8 лет назад

Abraham 123 It's supposed to be easy to learn and user friendly. I love the graphics in this one, not because they look better but they seem to catch better with the personality of the game.
Sims 3's graphics look like they wanted realism but also cartoony things; it looks weird.
There are many improvements. I can't remember all but the sims A.I is much, much better, for example, you can't kill sims in the pool by removing the ladder anymore, they get out.
The build mode was re-maked if im not mistaken, and by my opinion it's better. It's simple, it works, and there's a lot of stuff to work with.
There's the camera and some seem to hate it, well, there's and option for that too. You can enable sims 3 camera and problem solved.
Can't rotate objects? With the sims 3 camera that's a thing too.
I don't think there's any problem with the game, all of the sims 3 functions are there, and it's good.

I completely agree with all the shortcomings you mentioned. And beyond those, there are also some glaring issues with how traffic works, and some of the specialties. Traffic always want to take the shortest, not most efficient route, so traffic often becomes a huge problem in bigger cities. Some of the specialties are too easy to generate cash with, so you can too easily have a near unlimited amount of cash. Which really doesn't matter anyway since the cities are so small!

I got this game for 20 bucks on Amazon a few days ago and I have to say I'm really enjoying it. I personally don't have a problem with the DRM but I can understand why people were upset about it. The servers are working perfectly so far. The gameplay is awesome. My only problem so far are some glitches. For example, a fire started across the street from my fire department and the fire fighters took forever to respond and when they finally did, they drove up and down the street twice until reaching the house which by the time was too late to be saved. Other than that, don't be discouraged by the DRM (unless it actually affects you) and server issues. I would give it an 8.5/10. The glitches are frustrating and the cities are kinda small.

I prefer not being able to terraform, because it forces me to add variety to the city without losing efficiency. In SimCity 2000, for example, or Cities Skylines, the most efficient way of building a city is always the most bland.

I just bought it yesterday. For the most part, it looks like they fixed the server issues. The only problem I had was with my own internet connection which dropped out mid-game, but I was still playing as I scrambled to get reconnected. Like Jared said, it stumps creativity considerably, but it's still a pretty fun city-builder.

Awesome review Jared! Been on the fence for Simcity for a few weeks (wife is a big fan), but this pretty much sealed it for me. Will wait for a few more months. Either way, your review was well thought out and really explained everything (better than GT or IGN).

When I heard a new SimCity was coming out, I dug out my copy of SimCity 4. Added the mods the community has been making for the last 10 years, and... wow, it just blows away whatever they released this year.
It actually feels like I'm building a city and I have to commit myself, and I see it grow.

I think they should have given two options for if you want other cities in the region: The online with your friends idea, or you can add other cities into the region via online download or adding them in through save files.

  • @juzzam3

It is very easy to make a self sufficient city. I've solo a built a great work several times, with just 1 city in the region. Just spec electronics and you will have all the money you need exporting TVs. Use recycling to gather alloys and import plastics. To easily upgrade your electronics HQ, store 6000 processors and sell all of them when 12:00AM hits so you can upgade your HQ to start producing TVs.

In case you are wondering, Simcity already fixed the servers, has offline singleplayer, has mods and has an expansion pack called "Cities of Tomorrow" that lets you have more population and services. The new highway system totally rocks and I would highly recommend any old Simcity fan like me to buy it. I would give it a 8/10, mainly because of the city size :(

  • @2bitnerd

I'd recommend playing Cities XL if you're looking for a hardcore city planning game. Far more challenge and fun than SimCity IMHO.

Great review. Its good to see someone finally give a balanced review of positive and negatives (there maybe some reviewers out there that I have missed). It's also good to see genuine feelings about the games features, like your frustration at the server quality for example. Much better reviews then most out there. Got yourself another subscriber!

I found this review lacking, mainly because he didn't mention the BIGGEST FLAW IN THE GAME... traffic. There's one, max two routes out of your city, and there's nothing you can do to change that. once your city starts growing large, suddenly you have a traffic jam, which causes major issues. If your city is based around gambling or sales? You can't get gamblers in, and you can't get your goods out. If your city has a powerplant that needs you to bring in materials? Hah, forget that shit.

***** SimCity 4 was actually pretty good optimizing the features of SimCity 2000. It was not a true improvement and added nothing extra to the game, but it was fun taking your sims from the Sims and importing them.

I wish multiplayer worked well but the reality is that half of the tiles are taken by people who instantly quit and/or fail in 5 minutes and the other half have players leaving in a few hours because they've finished building on the small space available to them and moved on to the next map. You will almost never see a multiplayer game finish a great works and organising a private match for this game is quite difficult.

The one problem with your high wealth circle with a park in the middle is that it wouldnt give the buildings room to upgrade. Thats another thing about this game that is a blessing/curse. You really have to think ahead and not box your RCI zones in or their growth will get stifled.
