Yes, I completely agree. Most helpful is, to keep it easy for beginners. One side to breath, fourth stroke and rotating more for breathing makes it easier to beginners. Perfection can come later😊

Great video as always! My predominant side is right but I feel way more comfortable breathing to my left. Just for my own clarity is the side breathing on completion of the fourth stroke? So left right left right then turn on the first left of the new cycle? That’s what it looks like in the video but Ive seen others showing to pull on the fourth stroke which for me would mean right left right pull on left and repeat.
Thank you for the comment - If you are more comfortable breathing to your non dominate side, that is TOTALLY ok - generally new swimmers should start by learning to breathe to their dominate side but its not a hard rule. --- Stroke 1 if you are breathing to the left is left, right, left, right breathe. --- Coach Jeff
I happened to run into Tarzan drills lately. What are your thoughts on that? Is it recommended for people with difficulty breathing while swimming freestyle?
Thanks for your comment. No, I do NOT recommend Tarzan drill - this is a very advanced drill and is used mainly to help with open water swimming to "spot" a perfect swimming line. --- We never want to keep our head out of water - we need to continue working on relaxing until we accomplish gaining a fresh breath. Remember, this takes practice! You can do it! --- Keep going, Coach Jeff
I am a new adult learner...I am able to do the steps in freestyle individually but not able to co-ordinate the arm pull and leg kick together. So on pulling the arms my kicks become less efficient...so not able to get the breath...Any drills/tips to correct it?
Thank you for your question - my belief is that you are attempting freestyle too early in your learn to swim journey. Freestyle is a stroke that should only be done once we have completed around 20 previous learn to swim steps. I document that entire process here: ruclips.net/video/MRRdIVlR-n8/видео.html ---- I am 100% confident that when you follow the process in the video, you will learn freestyle effortlessly at the conclusion. I would also love the opportunity to work with you in person - check out our information regarding our in person retreats in San Juan PR here: foxly.link/FREERETREATGUIDE --- Keep going! Coach Jeff
My biggest problem, as you mentioned, with most beginners, is that I don't breathe; I hold my breath. There isn't enough time, and the corner of my mouth is still in the water. I could never figure out when my instructor said I needed to reach out more, but with practice, I realized that is only possible when you rotate/pivot your hips more to the side. Learning to swim correctly takes time. In an adult class size of 5, I was the only one who never took lessons or even stepped in the pool, and we were told to glide on the first day. Very soon, I found out that not only could they glide, but they could also swim freestyle in the shallow end of the pool. In the first two weeks, I only did bobs and learned to float on my belly and back. I tried to practice kicking with a kickboard, but my legs kept sinking because my kicks were weak. So, I only concentrated on gliding and kicking from week 3. Once the kicks improved, I tried getting my arms out, but that was a struggle initially. I think that, around week 6, I could finally get my arms out, although inconsistently. After watching multiple videos, I finally started rotating my hips and started to significantly improve. I decided not to compete with anyone; I would do one thing at a time - first, learn to kick strong, then get my arms out, and finally, I want to incorporate breathing into it. My instructor says I need to make the "popeye face" to keep water from getting in my mouth :) I think I have made good progress in 10 weeks. I can do a backstroke without water getting in my mouth, glide from side to side while rotating my arms, and my legs don't sink for the most part like they used to. I watch your videos very closely and hope to catch my breath soon; that is the only stumbling block in swimming freestyle at the moment. I can make it to the middle of the pool without breathing, but I also get tired and have been getting headaches lately. I will keep trying because I really enjoy being in the water; the fear of sinking is gone, I feel very comfortable in the water and would like to make swimming a part of my lifestyle.
Congratulations on your progress and remember to ALWAYS prioritize relaxation over technique in the early stages of learning & to compare your progress against yourself and never against someone else. One of the hardest parts of learning to swim during IN PERSON lessons is that the skill level is SO different amongst new swimmers. --- You have made great progress and 100% keep going! TO YOUR SWIMMING FUTURE, Coach Jeff
I finally can turn my head and take a breath over my shoulder (very inconsistently though). But water gets in my mouth before I can turn my head back down in the water. I have watched dozens and dozens of videos, and I noticed that once the swimmer catches a quick breath, their mouths are still open when their heads go back down in the water. What do you do under such circumstances? Ideally, shouldn't we have time to catch a breath and close our mouths again before the head dips back? I also think my chin position has to do with being unable to consistently catch my breath. I think my chin position is too low.
My head is not coming that out so i can take breath from my mouth. I am good at floating, kicking, hand movement and breathing out in water except breathing in outside.
Thank you for your comment - try lifting at the waist more... you have to more than just lift the head, it has to be an entire upper body movement. --- Hope this helps! Coach Jeff
Do you move your arm in recovery differently when you swim "seriously"? This Olympic swimmer suggests to throw your arm (contrasting it with Thorpe's technique but similar to your videos ). See his demo at about 7:30 ruclips.net/video/2YoeK9iIw4E/видео.html
This recovery style is for sprint freestyle - Cullen Jones is a sprinter not a recreational swimmer who is swimming for exercise etc. Your stroke "Does" fluctuate when swimming faster but its not something I would focus on recreationally. Focus on one stroke style :) Hope this helps!
