That term, 'underserved students'. That instantly sets students of color, that don't come from well to do families, or groups, as victims, as already undeserving. The term doesn't sit well with me. They are 'smart, talented youth'. The hero complex is a complex issue also. I'd love to see STEM heroes represent the communities that have just as smart and talented students already. I know that and you see how this term can potentially be very offensive and almost discriminatory: if you have one group that is a set of underserved individuals the you must have another set of overserved individuals. When these two sets sort of merge, these classifications are removed so why do we continue using the term “underserved“. And why is it that again? This is members of the “underserved “set are not drawn out as the ones who can serve their own “underserved“ members of that set?
