Boat life in Penang City - Sailing SE Asia Ep.68

- A rare marina stop for Florence means boat life in the city. Exploring the 2nd Largest City and the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. The diverse culture of Penang was an intriguing stop for us and we enjoyed exploring the city whilst also preparing Florence to cross the Indian Ocean. Out of the cities that we have seen in Malaysia this was by far our favourite for culture, interest and spectacle.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat, our own little tiny house. Boat life out at sea on the ocean.

Penang is just the best. Culture, food, scenery, everything. The contrast between old and new and between the different cultures in the population there. We loved it there when cruising through.
Wow...I'm from Penang. Thanks of your video.
Love the drone photos. You guys are awesome photographers and give us such amazing shots. Thank you
Great photos and background information well done.
Amy and Matt, your videos and presentation keeps on getting better and better. You give a very well balanced perspective on our World and just how wonderful it, and the people living in it, can be. Goodwill and harmony always needs to be emphasised, particularly in these times of global stresses. Thank you.
Well stated. I agree.
We are so enjoying your adventures. You are brave, courageous and an inspiration on so many levels. Thanks for sharing
Since I left Penang and area in 1966, it was wonderful to visit it again via your amazing video. Fantastic!
I lived there!!!!
Another great video. A good mix of culture and the typical sailing jobs. You guys are the best channel at really encompassing what cruising is all about. Sailing to the destinations and then embracing the new cultures when you get there. Great job guys keep it up.
Safe travels guys another great video
Great pictures. The drone is definitely an improvement to an already great channel. Thanks!
We love SE Asia. Delicious food, reasonable prices, amazing art and culture. I’ve really loved watching your journey. Stay safe out there.
Your filming and editing along with the drone is just getting better and better. Six years traveling around the WORLD on a shoe string will be remembered forever well done to you both Im Well jealous cheers from Hertfordshire UK
the drone video's are amazing, love to follow you guys around, leep up the good work and especially a save and healthy travel
Another brilliant vid. Love the drone footage of the temples. Better than any travel doco on the TV (especially those really annoying ones with some has been celebrity 🤣).
What a fascinating cultural experience
These 2 deserve a plain sailing trip well adventurer with no hick ups 2 really nice ppl
Was so excited for this video. Penang is a gem. And an example how faiths & cultures live side by side in harmony. Perhaps it’s something to do with how lovely the people are there. And the lifestyle is SO affordable. Love this place & so glad you did too. Stay safe & well beautiful people❤️
Thank you so much............!!!
Matt innocent and incredibly hardworking and so pleasant
What an awesome spot. I can't imagine the labor required to adorn that temple. Your work is inspiring.
brilliant : )
Wonderful video.
Excellent cinematography and narration.
Editing is spot on.
Thank you!
You two keep my cup running over..thank you again
Excellent video and very nice use of the new drone. Penang is beautiful and its nice to see Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims living in harmony. A fair wind and following seas!
A big thumbs up for a great video! 👍
Lovely episode! I really hope your re-galvanized spade holds up for the three years. I worry a bit with the shinyness. There was a recent comment with the Gone With the Wynns folks about their shiny anchor chain that quickly went bad and they later learned that shiny galvanization is a bad sign.
Do drone on & on & on, Please. I stopped the video to look up "fore ended"? no luck , then back to video where Amy explained it simply enough. Next time I'll be patient . I am so fortunate to have you two traveling for me, though I've never had the urge to throw a bucket of salt water over my head, ,,,,,OK sure if I had to. Safe travels.😇
I adore your channel. Good, wholesome fun. Look forward to your next episode.
Glad the drone is working so well.
Fantastic video as usual.......good luck, be safe.
“Coming and going safely”, 7:42 top row, pink, of course!
Great cinematography guys. Drone got a good workout - excellent.
Well done, keep up the good work, stay safe
Thanks for another great video! You're preparing to sail across an ocean; meanwhile my dog tries to catch his own tail 😒
WOW Real nice tour . Thanks for sharing ...... stay safe
Another wonderful video with great drone footage. So glad you were allowed to use your drone. Here in the US so many locations deny drone flight.
I enjoy greatly watching your fantastic videos. They are always good mood lifters and after seeing an episode I have a big smile on my face :)
looking forward to more great drone footage
That was very informative. I have studied Chinese language in the past, but I am pretty anti PRC. I have been thinking about diving back into my studies, but still anti PRC (did I say that?) and Taiwan is crowded and expensive. Now I can seriously consider Malaysia as a destination should I decide to go for it. Many thanks.
Great vid. Love your chanel. Keep up the fantastic work
Fantastic once again, you two take care now.
good drone work, good editing, good fades and zooms, the large view pans still need work as well as the tilts they seem too fast.....great video all around, I enjoy seeing the world through you eyes, looking forward to the Indian Ocean
Hey guys. It’s kind of bananas here with COVID-19, and we’re all stuck at home. If you wanted to release a video early and give the rest of us some escapism, it would be greatly appreciated.
Absolutely stunning drone photography, well done you two. No other way to capture the scale, scope and drama of that city. Your photography and editing skills are exceptional, just enhanced by the new gear. Your commentary about the mixing of cultures, and the old and new and beautiful temples remind me very much of traveling along the Silk Road in China, especially Xian, where so many religions exist side by side dating back a thousand years. Safe travels out there.
Always a treat to catch up on your next adventure. So much to do, so much to see, you’ll have to live forever! Thanks again for bringing us along! ...really is a treat to see through your eyes 🥂cheers!
Amazing video. Thank you so much!
Well done. The drone adds a whole new dimension. I have seen lots of photos of the city but never as good as the drone footage. Now I need to get a copy of the music played in one of the temple scenes. Really brought back my own memories of western Pacific areas. Stay safe!
Another brilliant film .... your films are such good quality.... be careful both of you .... the worlds gone a little crazy just now ...
Thanks, living on a boat is perhaps the best way to self isolate!
Really crazy..... It amazes me.
Can't wait to see you in Capetown.
We will be there, hopefully, just the small matter of the Indian Ocean in between!
You both are a refreshing breath of fresh air, so positive and uplifting, especially after a hard day’s work. You both mentioned going back to England, just off hand. Are you missing home? Just wondering? Texas
Hi Jeff, we miss family and friends rather than 'home' itself. We visit so many amazing places, the part that is missing is sharing those places with friends and family, this is a big part of why we make the videos, they allow us to share a small part of the adventure with those at home. We do however plan to sail home to England in 2022.
@@SailingYachtFlorenceunfortunately it won't be the same when you get back. Stay safe.
Great cinematography and drone work nice video
Amazing scenery and really enjoying your world voyage, can't wait to embark on the same ourselves. Please keep the videos and information coming
Excellent video.
Love Penang 👍🏻
Love your videos.😁👍⛵🍺🙏
Wow, this is going to be a great season for RUclips viewers. You, Sailing Nadji and Sagar Rani are all currently on the west coast of Malaysia / Thailand getting ready to head to Chagos then finally South Africa. This is going to be epic. :-)
I've spent quite a bit of time in Penang. Love the food.
Guys - you visited my home town, Penang island in this episode - did u try famous Penang Road's cendol ? It's our local version of shaved iced (sweet) drink ? Khoo Kongsi temple is named after the Khoo clan - and they have a foundation that sponsors their clan's youth for tertiary studies at overseas Universities. There is a market around the entrance road to Kek Lok Si temple and you can have a taste of the variety of local food sold at the food stalls.
Great update again guys, thanks :) Would be really interesting to get an indepth idea of your thought processes as you plan your Indian Ocean crossing! Why are you choosing the islands you're going to go to, why SA and not Red Sea / Med, what hazards are you preparing for? Would be great insights :)
Hi Dean, we were just thinking about making an episode on that subject!
very nice video !!
"jobs a good un" Brilliant.
Parabéns pelo vídeo. Belas imagens. Boa sorte.
Great to watch you both. You may find shiny Gal on your anchor may prove to be a little thinly applied by your fast workers. That is why it was duller when you bought it new. It is still going to hold. Take care out there and enjoy.
Steve Prendergast. Yep was thinking the same thing. In most cases if Gal is done right it should be a duller colour. lower quality and rushed jobs are often shiny. Hope it last longer for Florence.
Thanks, we shall see about the anchor. As it didn't cost much, if we have to get it re-done again in SA it is not the end of the world.
Hi both, another great video, thank you. Just a small point, add a bow shackle between the swivel and the anchor shank. This stops the side load on the weak part of the swivel when the anchor resets as the wind or tide changes. Stay safe out there.
Hi Simon, Thanks for the tip.
Please come to India. It's a country you simply cannot miss. I would want to host a dinner for you both.
Class Act! Dee and Deb
Some would say you could do this for a living😜 keep it up guys...
Enjoying your travels so much. Please be careful not to catch the Corona Virus.
How long are you thinking of cruising by sailboat? Love your chanel. Great videos. Thanks for sharing. Cheers form Norway
Hi, Thanks. We started off with a 3 year plan to circumnavigate. That has gradually extended to 6 years meaning returning to England in 2022. But who knows?
The hope of the world is art .
All of us hunkered down watching the beautiful views....wondering when this was taken and if your limited at all like other sailing crews with the outbreak?? Thanks for the journey!!
This was filmed about 2 months ago, we are now in Indonesia, staying in remote isolated islands so no problems so far. The rest of the year's cruising plans are under review though. More info on our facebook page.
Another amazing video, great camera work
Great video thanks, is there coronavirus affecting your trip at all at the moment?
Hi, we have our temperatures taken and are asked if we have been ill when we check into a country but other than that no real affect. Since Florence is stocked up for crossing the Indian ocean now we have no fear of running out of toilet paper like the rest of the world!
@@SailingYachtFlorence Ha ha! The scenery you show is just lovely and of course interesting. But more beautiful for me is seeing a young couple so much in love as you two. Amy-- you have a responsible, talented and reliable friend and mate in Matt. Hold on to him. And Matt-- you've one hellva gorgeous partner and shipmate. You lucky so and so! I've booked and tried to sail the Whitsundays three times now and failed. Just about given up as I'm getting too old.
I actually didn‘t like that way of tourist information. But this time it‘s really impressive. u both give me the message it’s still worth living for the chance experiencing this as you do.
Malaysia trully Asia. Beautiful country.
Stay safe guys, especially in this time of COVID19. Don't go back to the UK, you guys are safer at sea.
Nice
You talked about end for ending your anchor chain... make sure that you run it all the way out now and then as the rusty bit in the chain locker can turn it into a rusty ball that you will need to cold chisel apart to get it out... don't ask how I know this. Steve... aka Rusty.
Self-deprecating humor is greatly appreciated! Isn't it amazing how many ways things can go wrong!
Hi Steve, That is not a problem as we are now heading through West Sumatra where the anchorages are DEEP. Not only do we run out all 60m of chain but another 20 of rope which is spliced onto the end! On the plus side this does make it easy to clean out the empty anchor locker... :-)
Hi how did you stamp your passport when arrived penang from indoneias ,was it at the marina?.Thanks
Passports don't have to be stamped on arrival anymore, At first it started off in EU not stamping then rest world copied its all recorded its sell on your passport number hope this helps and I'm right.
Were there any issues from authorities regarding flying the drone near the temples?
Many places now have 'no drone' signs which is understandable as drones can be annoying. So we always check for these signs before flying. Nobody had a problem with what we were doing there. Other than at launch and recovery the drone was just a small spec in the sky high above everything, so you couldn't even hear it.
I was going to ask if a stainless steel anchor would be cheaper in the long run, but at $35 for 3 years I’m doubtful.
The short answer is no. SS anchors are about 3x the price in the first place!
🙂👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
any restrictions on using drones for your photography?
either there are none or they got away without getting caught
👍
What happened at 11:15?
I wish I was 30 years younger and 30 years richer
I'm 67. I waited all my life. It's time to do this. I will end my life at sea, somewhere in the world. First major stop is Australia. My goal is to celebrate my 70th birthday in Sydney,
Well done Paul go for it , my agenda is quite full as I am my wife ‘s registered carer as she suffers from Alzheimer’s I don’t think a life on the ocean waves would be safe , when you get to Sydney put it on you tube I’m sure it will get a good reception 👍🖖

Hope, you make it! Wish you all the luck! 😎👍
I just worry when they get into territories with Pirates
Is Covid-19 affecting your travel plans? If so, how?
It has had no impact other than having our temperatures taken at check in so far.
@@SailingYachtFlorence What will you do when you all get it? What is your plan? will they accept you in to their hospitals? The realities of pandemic are real...it will be humbling. Please stop and think and consider your options. Social distancing is likely the best thing that you can do.
Don't worry we are ahead of the videos in reality, just about to head off across the Indian Ocean. That is about as far as you can go in self quarantine / social distancing!
@@SailingYachtFlorence I agree that you are in effect self-quarantining, but when you reach your destination will they allow you to land, or at least reprovision. Is it a place where you want to stay for an extended time? Have a safe journey.
@@SailingYachtFlorence lol, never a truer sentence spoken!
Uhhh,,,,PANDEMIC ??!?!
Too inexpensive, too shiny...
It looks like Philippines
covid-19
Welcome to Malaysia, but this is not a good time to visit because of the China virus.✌👍
Thank you but don't worry Banny, we are a little ahead of our videos and have moved on to Indonesia, no where is good for the virus but living on a boat is not a bad place to be.
