  • Many thanks to Andreas and the team at Derringers, SA for hooking me up with this scarce plank of twangin' goodness. Apparently Fender only produced 150 of each of three Cabrinita colours in 2019 so I consider myself lucky to have spotted it and even luckier to have scored a ripper deal from Derringers. Here I've paired it with a good old Concert 6G12 combo (modelled in the Axe-FX III) and compared it to my Broadcaster for a twang showdown.
    Today's tools:
Guitar: 2019 Fender USA LE Cabronita; 2020 Fender USA 70th Anniversary Broadcaster. Both stock.
Amp: Axe-FX III MKII running Cygnus FW 17.02 - Fender Concert 6G12 model
    Mic: Samson Airline77 (me)
Camera: iPhone 11 Pro and Canon D60
Soundcard: PreSonus Quantum & Fractal Audio Systems Axe-FX III MKII (guitar, mixing and bouncing).
Desktop Monitors: PreSonus R80 R-Series Active AMT Studio Monitors (www.presonus.com)
    Computer: 2017 Apple iMac Pro, 2.5 GHz 14-Core Intel Xeon W, 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16 GB
Software: Logic Pro X, Apple Final Cut Pro X, Compressor.
This video was not sponsored or paid for. It's just for fun.

I am a fan! What I like is that you actually use high end! So many guys I see and jam with have no bite in their tone. They sound like they are playing a Les Paul with the tone off and both pickups on when they are playing a Tele! Nice hearing bite and nuance. You get great overdrive and distortion tones!

Ha! Nah, I just coax what I want out of them. If I can't do that they're shown the door pretty quickly. Thanks.

I have a custom shop thinline with a tv jones filter in the neck, similar to your cab. Just got a 70th anni Tele last week, for less than half the price of the custom shop, and is every bit just as good.

The only HB that belongs on a Tele. Great comparison! I'm 53 and I'v been playing Teles for 35 years. My final version is going to be a 50's ash tele with a Broadcaster bridge and a Ray Butts TV Jones Filtertron in the neck.

@whoiscarloswhoI like it lot plus I got an exceptional deal on it, probably $200 less than market price. It was pretty much new in the gig bag. A girl was selling it. An Ex had purchased it for her a few years prior along with a Fender amp. The problem was it was an acoustic amp #1 and #2 solid state. I only do tube amps nowadays, in my old age. We made a deal less the amp. I actually picked it up the same day on the same BIG round trip to pick uo my first Telecaster, a 2008 MIM Telecaster, Midnight Wine. One of the best dealing days if not the best. I had 2 completely differents MIM Fender Teles from two different sellers for a grand total of $850. $550 for the Cabronita and $300 for the the other one, which had upgraded DiMarzio pickups and Grover locking installed. It came with some relic scars. The urethane had some chips in the finish on the back but I didnt mind one bit. It was pre-reliced so to speak for no 3xtra charge.
On 5he Cabronita I added a dual stack tone pot so I could have a tone circuit and Babicz Full Contact Saddles. The saddles really opened up the Fender Fideltron pickups. I may even buy a set for the other Tele.

I was tempted by a gold top version but couldn't justify spending the cash. Especially as I was chasing a USA Tele Acoustasonic. But damn did it look good. Tbh I've always found those kinds of pickups a bit too bright. Great through the right amp but difficult to pair with other guitars. I feel the same about mini-humbuckers too so that's no reflection on the guitars and more my ears! 😁

They both sound great but those TV Jones are surprisingly twangy for humbuckers.

FilterTron style pickups should be, if they are made properly. Original FilterTrons were very clear sounding pickups.

I'm a big fan of Teles just having standard Tele pickups, but those TVs sound really good. Clear and airy just like original FilterTrons. With no tone control, I'm surprised the tone darkens when you roll off the volume though. I always assumed that happens mainly because of the tone circuit, because it can be cured by doing 50s Les paul style wiring, moving the capacitor to the middle lug of the tone pot, taking the capacitor out of the circuit for the first half of the tone knob's sweep. So now I guess I have no idea why 50s wiring works. Learn something new everyday.

Not recommended unless you pot the pickups. The back pickup can take off with tons of gain.

I was very keen on that Cabronita when it first appeared and just couldn't justify it.
So, since then I wanted something similar. Ended up with a MIJ troublemaker tele...I certainly couldn't justify the parallel universe version.
And there's a very similar MIM version with exactly the same selector switches as yours with Seymour Duncan humbuckers, can't recall the model# pups off the top of my head. I think it's called a custom tele, not to be confused with custom shop 😆
Really interesting vid...the cabronita definitely has humbuckers warmth & sounded twangy enough prior to your 70th anniversary edition. However, that almost sounded too brittle, until you played it a bit and my ears quickly adjusted.
So, really we need to hear them in a mix. Assume the 70th cuts through with ease, whereas the cabronita not so much. Although, I assume the pups are likely a bit hotter....hmmmm....
No issue....they both sounded great, Buy them both, as you have!!!

How does that compare to your c4 titan that you use to have

    • @BrettKingman
      @BrettKingman  2 года назад

It's a lot lighter (Titan pushed 4kg), that's for sure. The Titan had SS frets and a different profile. It was great but just too weighty for me. I have to say I prefer the real thing in this case.

@@BrettKingman Thanks Brett. I love the sound of both of them ( the titan and the fender).a pity only 150 were made. Rick in Frankston could make his version I suppose. 4 kgs is a heavy beast. The nice sound of the Tron style pick ups
