See I'm old enough to remember this song from before the meme. It was always great. I think the internet found his voice and appearance a funny juxtaposition.

He has had a huge resurgence this past year. He has a great performance at the Glastonbury festival being perceived as winning Glastonbury. This lead to the BBC having him host their New Year’s special. He also released a new album with some really good songs.
Yes, that was the first ever meme.

He does have some wonderful songs. He did a cover of the Temptations song - Ain’t too Proud to Beg that really shows how soulful his voice is. This live performance back in the ’80s is great. ruclips.net/video/n8qQg6QIUqg/видео.htmlsi=XO1F5NnP1fg1eDZc

Rick Astley was a great sport about the whole Rickrolling thing, and I think after it died down (RUclips started putting ads in so it was kind of impossible to surprise anyone with the music video anymore) there was this newfound appreciation for him and those "cheesy" '80s hits. They were, as you said, bops. Legit bops. And as Rick matured his voice just aged like a fine wine, lol. The Foo Fighters even invited him onstage in an impromptu moment during a concert a couple years ago and did a grunge version of Never Gonna Give You Up.

@@MGrayl-ib5fo not as deep as Tim Faust from Home Free.
Rick is very rich and clean.

    • @MGrayl-ib5fo
      @MGrayl-ib5fo 6 месяцев назад

@@theodorabruin4601 Tim Faust is a proper bass singer. That's a deep voice - Rick's is fairly middle/high, he just produces the sound with a very open throat & keeps all the resonance at the back.

Rick actually has an amazing voice. My favourite of his earlier songs is called You Move Me. It was used in A LOT of movie trailers in the 80's. Very underrated - but I think one of his best.

I remember the brief Rick Astley craze around 1986-87. Someone put up posters everywhere that said:
    Do you like dancing??
    We don't!!!
Join the' I Hate Rick Astley' club!!
    (Phone #)
I was in an experimental band at the time, we liked the poster so we put it up on tbe studio wall to remind us of our allegiences!! Lol...
Then the Ricky Martin craze happened and we had a new enemy!!
But after seeing that recent clip of Rick Astley trolling himself,
I can't hate him anymore. Quite often artists hate their own hits, especially if they have become hugely famous from that one particular pop song.

I remember when this song came out was massive on the danefloors and Rick’s little move that you mentioned? Is what everyone was mimicking. 😂 ‘Together Forever’ sounded too familiar to this song. But his next top 10 hit had a different feel ‘It Would Take A Strong Strong Man’ Rick has a great catalog of music.

Rick Astley is one of top artists made famous by Stock Aitken Waterman (abbreviated as SAW). An English songwriting and record production trio consisting of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman. The trio had great success from the mid-1980s through to the early 1990s. SAW started producing underground club hits, but earned worldwide success with a mix of hi-NRG-influenced sound, romantic Motown lyrics and Italo disco melodies. During 1984-1989, their musical style was labelled Eurobeat. Donna Summer also had hits with Stock, Aitken and Waterman. "This Time I know it's For Real". They created such a great sound!

The album is called “Are We There Yet” and my grandkids who are late teens, early 20’s absolutely love it.

I was shocked, like many others, when I first saw Rick Astley. First of all, I had always thought he was Black. I never expected that voice to come from this red-haired kid who appeared to be about 15 years old! I've seen him in interviews and he's a great guy. He was completely confused by what happened with this song. His daughter had to explain "Rick Rolling" to him. 😅

The meme started all the way back in 2006 on the internet. I even remember (though I still can't find it) an instructional video on how to Rickroll someone and this video featured a woman explaning that you can Rickroll someone by sending a link to the music video through E-mail. I've got Rickrolled several times through 2008-2009 back in those early RUclips times. lol

I was about 10 when this song came out and even then I remember my brother and I were very confused about why it was such a hit. When the Rick-rolling thing started it really seemed like this song had been produced entirely for that purpose alone. The first time I heard about it I thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

I’ve always liked this song and got the joke but I’m glad it’s mostly over. What I especially like about Rick is something you touched on. Like Karen Carpenter, Phil Collins, Levon Helm and Don Henley, Rick is a drummer who sings! I only recently found this out but was blown away. Here’s a performance from some years ago and he rocks! Enjoy! He’s covering Highway to Hell from AC/DC…

Rick Ashley was one of those artist that was a victim of industry pigeonholing. They weren't sure how to market a wht boy with such a soulful rich voice. Same thing happened to Lisa Stansfield of " All around the world" fame. Thankfully, these days those boxes and constraints aren't there and unfortunately neither is the same level of talent!

OMG, the extremity people threw themselves into Rick Rolling has been part of my life's examples The Joys of the Human Spirit. We can come together and get wayyyyy too involved in Good stuff at times, thank goodness, teasing each other.
It wasn't limited to linking. People were putting references to it all over to sneak into people once it got going hard. One I was thoroughly surprised and had to give a respectful nod to was when I was logged into World of Warcraft back when it was in its height back then.
I'm running around and come up on multiple characters spaced in a row, each slightly behind and to the right of the one before so you could read the character names as a receding sentence. Someone(s) had logged in on multiple devices to line up characters named
    NEVER. GONNA. GIVE. YOU. UP.
and just leave them there for ages to Rick Roll anyone who just *happened* to run through that part of the game at that time.
