I love this song so much!!!!! My college band that I played in when I was 5 years old got to play this on top of Thomas Jefferson's head on Mount Rushmore :)))))) I play tenor fulte 0th chair, the part was so crazy!!!!! Tenor flutes represent. This was such a good and easy song :')) We played it three times as fast and sight transposed it 2 steps down
This is a rather difficult piece to play and any high school group that can play it should be applauded. I played this piece at the Hollywood bowl in California conducted by the composer. There is a lot of meter changes throughout the piece just like his most popular piece and that would be west side story.
+bill hudson We played this in middle school. True I was a percussionist, but it was hard for everybody else. You are right, any ensemble that can play this, especially middle/high school should be applauded.
we played this in my concert band, almost impossible for all of us to play at that tempo so it had to be slashed by almost half. Great piece and these guys make it seems effortless
Played third horn on this freshman year with my local youth orchestra and had a blast! Played it again this year as a senior in band and man is the Orchestral version better! Granted the horn parts are identical but there is just so much more contrast and color. This performance - flawless!
***** Yeah but I played 1st horn when my band did this piece last year so I was listening and commenting on that part specifically. But you are right that the horns are amazing in this song!
Our band had played this high school(40 years ago) and I loved all the tunes. Later in my first year of teaching as a band director I had my band playing this. I was having a conversation with my college conducting professor and he asked about the repertoire I was having my students play and I included this number in my list. Upon hearing this My Former Professor grumbled, "What! Show tunes.... Where is the Bach!.... Somehow I think Old JSB would have enjoyed this performance... Bravo!
Playing this for my sophomore year and just beautiful songs for Wind Ensemble was made me super happy, I had to put a lot of work into it. I'm glad to have it spent with the my head director, too bad he's retiring. Mr. Joe will be missed. I'm glad to have these memories with my band geeks, haha.
played this junior year in college. were never able to play it this quickly - or cleanly, but what an incredible piece. this is up there with Second Suite in F, First Suite in Eb, and Manin Veen. I played euphonium. Great stuff!
It's always going to be super memorable for me because we played it on a trip our band took to San Francisco (we're in Idaho, mind you). On the way home we had a clinic on this piece at UC Davis, and what a great learning experience that was(:
Playing this for a concert this spring in my High School's Wind Symphony ! It's fun to play, and challenging too. I personally think challenging music is more fun.
My high school wind ensemble played this at NYSSMA majors along with Florentiner March and Eternal Father Strong to Save. As a freshman oboist, it felt amazing to get gold with distinction. We worked hard, but we got it done. I'm convinced we played it even faster than this recording. In the beginning, it was a mess but after practicing for a few months it came together amazingly.
I played this sophomore year in college. I played clarinet. Probably one of the post difficult pieces I've ever played in wind band. This and Sonoran Dessert Holiday
I was a junior in highschool when i played the first oboe part, but it wasn't my high school that played it. There was a clarinetist from my high school band in it, as well as my woodwinds instructor. It was by far my favorite we played. (2nd being molly on the shore)
I played this in elementary school. It was really challenging. The trombones, euphoniums and tubas really worked up a sweat!!!!! At that time, the tempo was WWWAAAAYYYY slower than this.
Just joined concert band (2nd Flute), grade 4, have to play this! 😥 Fun, but tough! Edit: 4 years on, in final year of school, grade 8 and currently leading the whole flute section. What a journey! And I still find this hard to play 😂
I was first chair clairnet in my college's concert band when we did this piece... Easily the most difficult piece I've played in band. (Orchestra's another story... looking at you, fountains of rome...)
my youth symphony read this piece today. I have the mallet part, and the person who had it before me wrote in every note, and some of them are wrong... grrr....
Williamstown High School Marching Band (from Kentucky) played this in 2010 This was our 1st performance that year so it's not that great Director: Robert E. Gregg (Bob Gregg)
@TPBThommTPB I played the Eb Clarinet for this song, and it is truly difficult. Many orchestras drop the octave down for this song and our band director didn't want me to.
the e flat part is incredibly fun on this part!!! :D i'm trying to convince my band teacher to play this but she won't let us, cause every recording her and her husband has performed, the ensemble always slowed down a lot by the end, and the proper tempo wasn't kept through, except of course for this recording and a couple of other bands
An army band director, CW2 Bill Doby, tried to conduct this in a slow 4. He was pissed when we told him how fast it was supposed to go. Not the first time he looked like an ass-hat - or the last time, either.
Oboe 1 part... Would anyone with the oboe 1 part be willing to scan it and send it to my email? It would be really awesome if anyone did that... Thanks

Chris Morse that's a joke right
I swear some people that comment on RUclips are stupider than those who comment on Imgur
PimpedKoalas on some classical music videos there are some people up their own arses, do forgive me for inquiring
what a troll lmao
This is such an underrated comment

We played it my junior year. It's a tough one for sure
our high school wind ensemble played this at Carnegie Hall in NY
We played in HS; it was a beast for sure.
My director said he’d give us an easier piece to play as a cool down at the end of the year. He gave us this.
we played this in my concert band, almost impossible for all of us to play at that tempo so it had to be slashed by almost half. Great piece and these guys make it seems effortless
1st oboe on this piece is SO MUCH fun!!! definitely one of my favorites after performing it
GavinGray Composition Agreed. I played first oboe on this piece too!
Fun? Terrifying is more like it!
Played third horn on this freshman year with my local youth orchestra and had a blast! Played it again this year as a senior in band and man is the Orchestral version better! Granted the horn parts are identical but there is just so much more contrast and color. This performance - flawless!
I just got this song in wind ensemble a few days ago. Go 1st french horn! ^_^
Mystical Unicorn Who did you murder to obtain that username
***** Yeah but I played 1st horn when my band did this piece last year so I was listening and commenting on that part specifically. But you are right that the horns are amazing in this song!
Gretta Buttelman
Gretta Buttelmann one of my favorite horn parts out of any piece I played. I loved hearing them play those soaring lines over and again
That piccolo solo just soars over the ensemble like an eagle over gracious mountains!
And the tuba sounds like an eagle falling to its death after it's been shot.

I'm glad to have these memories with my band geeks, haha.
Performed this in my High School Wind Ensemble my sophomore year, on tuba. Will never forget how fun it was to play this
+sav stewart That's literally what I'm doing this year lmao
Wow, what a great band rocking this piece!
My band is sightreading this tomorrow. Lord help us..........

Just got this piece yesterday playing tenor sax and it’s a blast!!
This was my band teachers dream song for us to play. I'm in 9th gradr that plays clarinet and i was proud we got to fulfill his dream.!
Played this on first clarinet in my high school wind symphony, second favorite piece ever I think!
So happy to find a winds version of this. Played this in high school in the 1970s. I was on clarinet.
played this junior year in college. were never able to play it this quickly - or cleanly, but what an incredible piece. this is up there with Second Suite in F, First Suite in Eb, and Manin Veen. I played euphonium. Great stuff!
Tom Lennox any tips for a junior in high school euphonium player? Not just for this piece, but in general. Thanks
Euphoniums!!!
More air never really hurts. And for range, make sure to not pinch.
It's always going to be super memorable for me because we played it on a trip our band took to San Francisco (we're in Idaho, mind you). On the way home we had a clinic on this piece at UC Davis, and what a great learning experience that was(:
I play the harp in this piece (IK one of a kind right?) and it's SO fun to play :D
The tympani part is so fun! I'm playing it tonight for our schools winter concert
beginning to 0:13 sounds like something out of super mario galaxy
+Spencer Jenkins I thought the exact same thing
SAME!
Super Mario Galaxy 3 confirmed XD
Something you’d expect from a Japanese band lol.
NYSSMA All-State symphonic band tenor sax. Had our concert this morning.
Go tenor sax
Playing this in my high-school band and I'm soooooooooo excited! It is so much fun to play on saxophone!
This is an awesome piece! I played it on the E flat clarinet and it was challenging but fun :)
Playing this piece for my senior year in wind ensemble! It's so much fun! :)

I played this sophomore year in college. I played clarinet. Probably one of the post difficult pieces I've ever played in wind band. This and Sonoran Dessert Holiday
We're playing this for MICCA in the advanced wind ensemble(a state band competition). I'm a 3rd clarinet. It's our make it or break it piece...
I have one and our wind orchestra is playing it at the moment, it is super fun with Eb clarinet, finally u have some parts just for urself :)
Why do I like the wind band transcription so much better?
Bassoon has got me dying
Victor Almond me too man lol 1st bassoon in college symphony
i’m playing the bassoon part and i haven’t even been playing for a year yet
❤
I was a junior in highschool when i played the first oboe part, but it wasn't my high school that played it. There was a clarinetist from my high school band in it, as well as my woodwinds instructor. It was by far my favorite we played. (2nd being molly on the shore)

At that time, the tempo was WWWAAAAYYYY slower than this.
Woahhhh Everything was perfect
Heh. I learned the timpani on this song. I put hours of practice in...and on concert night, whoever set it up put all the timpanis backwards.
👍 great song
nice
Well said
A legend
I also played this in high school. I played tenor sax.
played this freshman year. loved it, it was kinda difficult though lol.
I'm the clarinet sitting at the first chair in my band. Tough piece, but fun at the same time.
(Orchestra's another story... looking at you, fountains of rome...)

i played it last Sunday in a concert. This is an amazing piece. it sounds harder then it looks, Promise lol
We're playing this in marching band. Instead of flutes playing so much in the beginning, it's trumpets. :)
sounds like the overture to the summer wars
my youth symphony read this piece today. I have the mallet part, and the person who had it before me wrote in every note, and some of them are wrong... grrr....
played this piece with the trumpet (;
I am playing this on my sophomore year
Williamstown High School Marching Band (from Kentucky) played this in 2010
This was our 1st performance that year so it's not that great
Director: Robert E. Gregg (Bob Gregg)
i play this for oboe..holy crap. it's so fast and challenging. I play along with the flutes. too bad you can't hear the oboe in this piece :/
I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to play this amazing piece at the age of 15 in a prestigious band I am in.
I'm a 3rd clarinet too, we're playing at half this tempo right now though bahaha
I wish i had the money for an Eb clarinet, id love to play this song with it.
@TPBThommTPB I played the Eb Clarinet for this song, and it is truly difficult. Many orchestras drop the octave down for this song and our band director didn't want me to.
Derek NewPeurasaari I'm playing Eb clarinet on it now and the high notes are a struggle
the e flat part is incredibly fun on this part!!! :D i'm trying to convince my band teacher to play this but she won't let us, cause every recording her and her husband has performed, the ensemble always slowed down a lot by the end, and the proper tempo wasn't kept through, except of course for this recording and a couple of other bands
It's also way to fucking hard for u nubs also how's college
An army band director, CW2 Bill Doby, tried to conduct this in a slow 4. He was pissed when we told him how fast it was supposed to go. Not the first time he looked like an ass-hat - or the last time, either.
Changing every quarter note from low Bb to low F..on a regular non-trigger trombone wasn't the easiest thing...specially at that tempo lol D;
I feel your pain.
I'm playing this NOW in concert sr high bandn REAL challenge, becasue I play fulte....
i played this in highschool :o also im playing it as a freshman in college :3

Pacheconator122 yes, I have it if you would like it
1st alto is so hard
