Flåm - Tourist Mecca meets mountain roads - VANLIFE NORWAY

- This episode was filmed 12th & 13th September 2022.
Continuing our journey towards Flåm, we finally find a park up for the night and Ken cooks up a hearty chicken stew.
The next morning is the wettest of our trip so far so it is no surprise that there is not much going on in Flåm. We decide not to take the train excursion due to the low cloud and poor visibility.
Instead we take a scenic drive, following the train track to admire the many waterfalls but how far will we get before we have to turn around?
After pizzas for lunch we continue our drive up the mountain to a viewpoint above the clouds.
The next decision to make is do we drive through the world’s longest road tunnel, 25km long or drive to Lærdal over the mountain?

Flåm is prononced Flohm. The å is like o in flow. Yes, Flåm is a major tourist trap to stay away from.
I am loving this series from Norway. As a Norwegian it is fun to see parts of my own country I have never visited, and most likely never will. And you two are so good at bringing us along. It feels like I am driving around with you. ☺
Exactly the feeling I am trying to create so that makes me happy 👍
May I ask why? I am originally from California, which is larger than Norway. I can't imagine not having traveled the State. Is it more difficult to travel around Norway?
@@littlebitofhope1489 California is "only" 20k square kilometers larger than Norway in land area. But most of the country is inhabitable mountain ranges or water. There is so much to see. And the coast line is the third largest in the world. We have more coastline than Russia or even Australia. It is about half as long as Canada. And we are a small country compared to Canada.
@@sjokomelk That wasn't my question. You said you have never visited many places in your country. I wondered if it was expensive or difficult to travel in. It doesn't look difficult on the videos, but living there it may be different. I'm a bit surprised you focused on the size thing.
@@littlebitofhope1489 It's not difficult to travel in Norway, But if you want to drive a car, I would suggest avoiding coming in the winter. The conditions can be difficult for people who are not used to driving in Snow and on Ice. There are trains, boats, and buses going anywhere if you don't drive. The van life couple goes out of the way to drive the back roads, if you want to go from A to B there are much easier roads to travel most of the time. It's much up to you want you want to see or experience. Welcome to Norway.
I’m really enjoying this Norway series. You have a knack of bringing the viewer along with you so I feel like I’ve had a little holiday too.
Glad you enjoy it! 🙂
Flåm’s attraction is not the place itself but the train that goes from sea level (the fjord) up to above tree level (about 1000 m. above sea level?) in the mountains. The waterfall is just a stop on the way there. The engineering needed to build a 20 km long train journey up such a steep incline is what makes the ride special. It twists up the beautiful valley and the tunnels make the ascent possible, as one of the tunnels even circles inside the mountain.
The road that was built for the line to be made is now a very popular cycle route over the mountains. The bikes are not expecting many cars because most people take the train to enjoy the views! A lot less hairy😉
The cruise tourists are not in Flåm (pronounced Flom) because there is not much to see in Flåm itself! They are on the train up to the mountains.
If it had been a clearer day we would probably have taken the train ride. We have watched a video of it on RUclips and it looks spectacular 🙂
There’s something for everyone … We felt the trainride was very expensive and left us a bit disappointed 😂 There is just so much beauty in Norway for free … but than again, I’m Dutch hahahaha
@@BrigittevTien That's the thing about Norway. You don't have to worry about missing a spectacular vista - always another one around the corner!
@@BrigittevTienI absolutely loved the train ride! I agree it´s a bit expensive though, but happy I´ve experienced it.

This is just so typical Norwegian.
Norwegian weather, mood, light, terrain, everything.
I love how calm and kind you are to each other. I wish you much more fun and safe trips, wherever life will take you. Greetings from West Sussex x
Thanks so much, Anna. You are very kind ☺️
I am a norwegian and have travelled a lot around in Norway. But we allways enjoy wTching RUclipsrs travelling my country. Flåm is aturisty place and may be a bit boring in low season. Thewestcoast is often foggy and rainy in the fall. Come back to Flåm in may when thefruit trees are full of white flowers... it is amazing with and without tourists.
I was there 34years ago with my Mother, motherinlaw and my 2babies 2.5years old and 6months. We took the train from Oslo. Then the Flåm train down hill. Spent one night in a cabin in Flåm then a buss along the fjord and upp the hill Steen and windy. Back to thetrain and Oslo. This trip givesyou everything and is called Norway in a nutshell.. It was a lovely roundtrip in may and absolutely lovely. 🤩 love watching you Gjessing abt lot of norwegian stuff like food, and areal you go trough. The pea soup look delicious. And we often travel like you but in our little green trailer. 😃
That sounds lovely. We would love to go back, maybe in the spring next time 😊
30 minutes with you feels like 5 minutes 😄 I thoroughly enjoy your videos!
Awesome! Thank you!
Norway is just stunning. A bit of Scotland, Canada and even hints of New Zealand. Thanks for taking us along.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 🙂
Fun fact. Norwegian companies often go to New Zealand to film commercials there when it is winter in Norway. That way they can film "Norway in summer" during winter. The landscape on the southern island is very similar to Norway.
Goats on the road, cows on the road, even a cow poking her head through the car window which we should have closed, clouds rising from the endless forests, water falling over every other rock, that's Norway as I remember. ♥️
Just want to give you two a big high five. I came across your channel by random, but have been enjoying it quite a lot. The trip to Norway so far. As a Norwegian myself it's been very nice to see through your eyes.
I find your videos and channel a wonderful way to stress down and be calm. There is something very soothing with the way the two of you communicate, joke around and travel. Keep up the good job.
Glad to hear you are enjoying our Norway videos and hope they do your country justice. We so enjoyed our trip there it is a pleasure to share it. Thank you for watching and the lovely comment 🙂
A VanLife tour of Norway is on my bucket list. I loved the limited time I spent there.
It’s a great country to explore in a campervan ☺️👍
@@LifeistooshortCK I’ve watched several series of VanLife tours of Norway-I really can’t wait to do it for myself!
Absolutely beautiful in the Summer ❤️ All the waterfalls and mountains! Wow!
Norway is stunning no matter the weather. I love the fact that every city or village is surrounded by nature and tranquility. It's otherworldly. I felt at peace when I visited Norway. Thank you for this video 😊
Too true. Glad you enjoyed the video 🙂
So nice to follow your journey, and especially when you have arrived at a car park by the Sognefjord just outside the village I live in. I can't wait to see the next episode where I hope you will go into the center of my village Lærdal.
Loved every minute of this video! The landscape and waterfalls and and rivers and huts…😊 Norway is a must destination. Thank you Carol and Ken.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I’m loving everything about there adventures I work a lot in the outback so when I have service I enjoy the footage and Kens narration on the places they visit.💙❤️💙❤️💙❤️
That is awesome! Thanks Jackie 🙂
Rural Norway is truly beautiful. Thank you for this journey with your point of view.
The sign of a true adventurer… the road keeps urging you forward. ❤
Always! 🤗
You 2 are such a breath of fresh air. Thank you for filming your adventures!!😊🥰
Thanks Linda ☺️
It certainly looks lush and green in Norway . Thanks for your travel tours ❤️
Thanks for watching.
Sometimes rainy days aren’t all that bad! Mary
Good point, Mary 🙂👍
Haha most creative way ever using ”norsk ertesuppe”😂😂😂
Lovely mountains. I love the grays against the green and white
Loved the beautiful drive even though now and then clouds tried to block the view, it was still beautiful. The rain didn't spoil it either. Enjoyed it very much 👍🙂
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I admire your bravery for the distance you made it on the road from Flåm to Myrdal. I have watched recordings made by a bicyclist in both directions and it gets narrower and more challenging the higher you go. You would not have regretted taking the train, it is spectacular no matter what the weather. A train driver for the line has posted many videos from the cab of the train. Glad you got to see the colors changing above the tree line, it is amazing at its peak. The tourist area by the docks and train station is convenient for visitors but not a true representation of Flåm. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures!
We have watched a video of the train journey and it does look amazing. We enjoyed the drive and being able to stop to see the waterfalls 😀
Powered by nature 🌟
22.32, yes, gees jus like scotland, up north. and i agree with what Glenys Perry said aswell.
This trip was visually spectacular!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
We spent two nights in Flåm on our trip in 2019. Part of our tour included riding the Rigid inflatable boats up the UNESCO Narrow fjord to the village of Undredal Toured the smallest stave church that was original to the village and watched their famous brown goat cheese being made. We were lucky to have sunny weather those days.
That sounds like an interesting trip and you were lucky to have good weather 😀
22:31
Actually the Scottish highlands and the Norwegian mountains actually used to belong to the same mountain chain way back when, a long mountain chain going through Norway, Scotland and parts of the US back when there was dinosaures etc.
As quite a few others have already said, I feel like I have traveled along with you in your little van. 😊lots to see, love the plentiful water falls! Nice meals in the van too! 😋😋
Glad you enjoyed it
the first time I went to Niagra Falls the whole thing was impacted by the weather. Looks amazing though
What a beautiful place Norway is thanks for showing us 🙂
Our pleasure 😊
Loved that drive through the mountains! We did it a long long time ago with significant better weather, but I do love the moodiness of this landscape. Great cooking too again 😉 Glad to report we received our ridgemonkey und succesfully made grilled cheese toastie and baked potatoes. That little pan makes me very happy ❤
Enjoy that Ridge Monkey 👍
It's not that we don't need the power, but that we want to preserve the natural beauty. It's a constant and neverending fight in Norway, the desperate need for renewable energy and the very strong will to preserve the environment.
Those walkways and steps along the Flåm river is both a walking path and for fishing. Usually with fly rods. There is salmon and sea trout in the river there. There is similar arrangements on other rivers nearby.
We didn’t know that, thanks 🙂👍
What a beautiful place Norway is such gorgeous scenery 👌❤️ I still can't get use to the narrow roads around Europe and England holy dooly 😂😂 wouldn't want to be driving a big motorhome that's for sure 😩🤣 thanks for a lovely time it was great 👍 can't wait to see your next destination 🙌❤️
Yes, we wouldn’t want a bigger van on those roads! Thanks for watching 🙂
Absolutely beautiful there thank you so much for sharing
Our pleasure. Thanks for watching 😀
Wow absolutely brilliant and stunning scenery. Those waterfalls were magnificent. I took a trip to Sainsbury's today specially to buy the can of chicken in white wine sauce that you recommend in previous vlogs. Was going to add a photo to check if it was the right one I have bought but cannot see how to add. Hopefully I have the right one. 🤞
Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy the chicken in white sauce 🙂
Hello & thank you for another inspirational video. That road you drove along was quite narrow indeed and not surprised you turned back .the water falls were amazing and that trip across the mountains was high up.!
I want to say thank you really because this has helped me get through a bad time as my father has been very ill . So having this to watch and take my mind off things has been helpful.
Take care both of you & great job!!
Thanks for the lovely comment Katie. Hope your father is feeling better soon ❤️
The waterfalls were beautiful and so many of them.
The scenery was spectacular the waterfalls were absolutely amazing, you are so lucky 👍❤️❤️❤️👍
Fantastic journey and beautiful scenery. I feel like l went with you both. Thank you for bringing us along ❤ take care.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
thx for a nice comfy ride break a leg 🙂
That area that reminded you of Scotland reminded me of Iceland, which we visited before COVID. Haven’t been to Scotland, but will soon, I hope.
Hope you do get to visit Scotland 🙂👍
Beautiful video.
Waww amazing so beautiful Norway trip thanks for sharing thumbs up God gives you more and more success best of luck appreciated love from Oman 🇴🇲
Thanks for watching 🙂
I have been enjoying these vlogs from Norway. This last one reminded me of Shetland when you were at the top of the mountain. Like you, I would much rather take the longer route than a tunnel any day. Great filming. Looking forward to the next one. Stay healthy, drive safely. Beth, Portland, Maine USA
Thanks Beth. Glad you are enjoying our Norway series 🙂
It would remind you of the mountains of Scotland, and it would also remind you of the Appalachian Mountains in the US if you visited there since they're all part the same mountain range - once connected as the Central Pangean Mountains.
We visited the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia several years ago 😊
Love this!!
Excellent ❤
Breathtaking views love the waterfalls x
Absolutely stunning scenery and so beautiful, much of which many of us will never get the chance to experience. It’s my hope to get to Norway one day and your videos always give me the thirst to do much more before my time is up … Thanks for sharing my friends 🍻
We hope you get the chance to go one day. Take care ❤️
Great vid guys
Wow! Such beautiful scenery guys! Some of those roads are pretty hairy! Ken talking to animals always makes me smile. I liked the “disco light” tunnel…I think you should find a real disco club and get out on the dance floor! Now that would make for a funny video😂
We’ll see what we can do 😆 Thanks Suzy ☺️
Get well soon ken.xx
Another great video & beautiful scenery thanks for sharing
You’re welcome ☺️
Just bliss full thankyou so much.xxxx
Thanks Gill 🙏
Simply breathtaking scenery
When I want to relax and look at beautiful scenery, I just find you. You guys are my favorite RUclipsrs ❤
Aww thanks Audrey ❤️
Get well soon Ken.
What a beautiful drive! I was a bit nervous for you, especially on the switchbacks. So glad you skipped the tunnel. Norway is definitely on my bucket list.....

Beautiful scenery, but the roads are not for the faint hearted !
Very true!

Yes it certainly was! Well worth the drive 🙂👍

Wee Jimmy
Very Beautiful scenery and views!! Hope you are feeling better Ken.
Thanks 👍
Another very enjoyable episode. So beautiful. Also love your choice of music.
Thank you very much!
Beautiful even in the rain and the goats were super cute. Another great vlog. 💕
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice video! Try visit Norway in wintertime as we, it's much awesome! Have a good trip, Chris & Chily
Would love to do that 👍
Beautiful place another great video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Whew, that look of things atop the mountain sure is nostalgic. Haven't drove over the tunnel in over two decades. Ha ha, I remember my family driving over during the winter, and the snow walls either side of the road were as tall as a grown man. Seeing as I was a little kid back then, that was quite a bit taller than me.
Yes, we were glad we didn’t get any snow. I can imagine the roads can be impassable in the depths of winter.
Great Trip 😁 Carol &Ken😁
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Wonderful episode with those amazing waterfalls and scenic views, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I’m enjoying travelling with you in Norway the scenery is beautiful even in the rain and the waterfalls look amazing 👋👋
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
We have travelled to Norway three or four times and we always remember how beautiful it is, never how much rain we had and that driving for hours still gets you nowhere. A bit tempted to go back this Summer but your rainy video is giving me second thoughts.
We would love to go back one day. The drawback for us is the long journey to get there. If they start up the ferries to Norway from England again it will be much easier 🙂
I’m across the pond and I absolutely love to be in my rv when it rains. I guess that’s why your rainy videos are my favorite. Cheers great video
Yes, it’s a great feeling listening to the rain from the comfort of your campervan/RV 😊
It is so exciting to follow you on your trip in Norway and the "travel letters" you create are absolutely fantastic. I wish you all the best and; drive carefully 🙂
Thank you so much! 😀
Really enjoying being along for the ride. Interesting to see the bits of the journey alongside the railway line, having taken that train ride 4 years ago. I think you passed some summer farms en route. (Perhaps some Norwegian viewers could confirm.) We were able to look around a summer farm on our (guided) walk up to a glacier from Lovatnet Lake. Would love visit more of Norway at some point. Many thanks, Laura
Glad you are enjoying the videos, Laura. There was so much we didn’t see on this trip we will have to go back and explore further north one day ☺️
Love the trippy lights in the tunnels .. I know it’s raining but the scenery and waterfalls are epic for sure especially tgat one half way up that road by the train
Great video very very watchable
Thanks for watching. Looking back at the video reminds us how awesome it was. Sometimes when you are surrounded by it constantly you take it for granted ☺️
Boy, those single track roads would make me pucker!
Excellent soup/stew you made. I do something similar with soups.
I particularly liked the music in this episode of a great series. 🙂👍🏻
Thanks 🙏
Beautiful video guys ❤️stunning scenery 🚐happy new year from Australia
Thanks guys. Happy New Year to you both and Pablo 😀🐶
The scenary in this part is breathtaking beautiful .. I would've stayed for an hour at the top. I mean, how often do you get to be at 1300m but it might've been to cold and windy :)
Norway is beautiful and I am thankful that you are sharing it with us
We like to try and find a park up while it is still daylight so can’t always stay longer in some places, unfortunately ☺️
Thanks for showing us the beautiful scenery in Norway. The waterfalls looked amazing. Somehow, I always like to see what you have to eat! That stew made with the soup looked tasty and the curry!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Over the top was definitely the best choice! Beautiful. Loved the waterfalls.
We agree! 🙂
