Yes, in fact you can engrave whatever you want- I made very typical damascus pattern but some abstract graphics would look insanely good on more fancy knife. There is a guy on instagram (vladislav.etching) who makes stunning etching on the blades but he doesn't use cnc machine(!). Check his instagram Ben. I'm more than sure you will love it. Lasers are neat. I wonder if you covered a blank in marking fluid, if you could use it to do all your layout lines? Keep in mind, if you burn your hand forging, it will probably heal; but your eyes aren't as resilient. Please be careful. Great video.
I don't fully understand the question Hawk. Are you asking could I use Marking Fluid instead of foil?.. Honestly I don't know- I would have to test it. The Laser head have this orange filter on 3 sides- it cut most of laser rays. I know how dangerous laser is - I got off the room to avoid radiation for 95% of machine working time- But still appreciate your concern- it mean you care (Thanks brother👊!).
I use Oil marker instead of permanent marker. I think, you are talking about Blue/Red Dykem. Most knife makers use is but it's too dark- I like use oil markers cause they are waterproof and give nice contrast.
The only potential problem I see is that, the market is bound to be flooded with replicant Damascus knives that claim to be real. Alternatively making no statement to the effect as it will be assumed, and will charge a premium for it. Or of course, selling lower and undercutting those with the real skills and commitment to develop or have developed the requisite expertise. Their costumers will not (at least initially) be aware of the false products. Beautiful knives by the way. Well done my fellow. Well done, indeed.
Thank you Buddy! Yes, The whole idea of combining laser engraving and etching wasn't about to make damascus- The typical star damascus pattern was used only as the example. Much more cool knives make "KAI Knives"- Japanesse company specialized on kitchen knives. I'll use this technique again in the future- plan is to etch tiger eyes or some cool graphics on steel and fill this area with brass or copper.. Something like Gold inlay on high end knives, but on the blade.

I can see where this laser system would be useful in creating logos, or touchmarks, or even animal patterns or the like, but as far as putting a "damascus" like pattern on steel it leaves me cold. Too mechanical a design for my taste, I want my damascus to be more random. Guess maybe I'm too old!!!
I believe animals and "picture graphics" can looks very cool on the blade- and this machine gives good result. I have one more idea in my head- but it must wait till I have more time to experiments. For now I can say: I want to make brass inlay on the blade and this machine can help me with that a lot! Yes, It's about 0,15-0,20mm deep, so it not only catch but even hold fingernail. However the depth depends on etching time. You can make it deeper or shallower

@@DBCraftWorld I thought if you used marking fluid to scribe your lines for grinding, it seems like a fast and consistent way to layout knives.
