  • Three years since I left Japan. Three years and countless hours of deep digging into myself - my sense of self - and in grinding through this healing journey. Where has it taken me? And, has it taken me too far? At what point does healing become…unhealthy?
I think you saw how unhealthy I got at one point. I had a very challenging relationship with food post-Covid, and I've slowly, very slowly, been finding a way to get comfortable with what was once a big part of me, to integrate with the parts of me that I was rejecting.
But this video isn't about that. I’m going to talk about my spiritual journey, how it’s helped me, and the parts where it has not only hurt me, but also hurt those around me. Healing isn’t a binary, going from unhealthy to healthy; healing is a spectrum, and if you do too much of it, you can end up just as unhealthy as you were before.
If you’re more interested in food and travel, though, great! I'm excited about it again! I’ve got two more videos in the works. My What to Eat in Lisbon guide is filmed, and now in the editing process, and we’re filming another great food video this week as well. I hope you like them when they're ready. Back to showing you great spots to add to your list of where to eat in Lisbon and Portugal.
Much thanks to Christopher Michael @camcat for being such a huge part of this process. If you’re in Portugal and you need a film/editing guy who knows his shit, ping Camcat.pt.
Also, for those of you on the path, I’d like to share a small map of the woods I’ve walked through, and at what point I found my way out. The only way out is through. I’m working on a short book as well, which will go up on my Patreon in the coming months. I’m more than 50% done the project, which is going in a direction that I haven’t heard any of the wellness community talk about yet, except in brief passing. I’ve put together a lot of the different ideas I gathered from the many different modalities of therapy I’ve experienced and studied, different aspects of the mystic side of Buddhism, neuroscience and psychology, linguistics and emotions, longevity and health, and more. If you’re interested, please consider supporting me on / simonsbookclub .

The video is really beautiful and well shot and I can appreciate some of the sentiments. Lisbon is indeed a beautiful city, but as a portuguese citizen, it does hurt me a little to hear that the community of immigrants (ex-pats is just a fancy word for immigration) is taking refuge from capitalism in Lisbon, because the city is being eaten alive by capitalism itself, and the portuguese people are less and less able to afford to live there since the prices of housing and goods and services is being driven so high, in part because of the growing ex-pat communities. Some of them don''t even pay taxes in Portugal or mingle with the locals. It's heart breaking and devastating for our economy, as more and more people are becoming homeless and gowing hungry to afford rents.

I recently heard that we create other versions of ourselves in order to survive/ preserve/ fight through. Then at some point it'll hit us that that version helped us get through a moment in particular where we needed that version but once we're through to the other side we have to say goodbye to that version of ourselves cuz in order to move forward that version must stay behind cuz it'll no longer bring us what we need.
This version of you is now taking the right steps forward it seems. Like you're peeling away the layers bit by bit. Nice to see you have some glimmer back. I hope you'll see that the true you has been there all along as you chip away the versions you created. I hope and pray you truly heal.

There is a lot of problems with expats in the cheaper parts of Europe hiking up prices and making it hard for locals to afford, what is that like in Lisbon? And Portugal in general? I've always wanted to move somewhere with more sun, but I don't want to do so at the cost of someone else.

    • @eatyourkimchi

It has definitely become an issue in Lisbon, as it has rapidly, very rapidly, become one of the most expensive cities for rent in Europe now, based on the news I'm hearing. It's not just too expensive for locals to afford: it's too expensive for foreigners to afford, too. I know people whose rent went up 33% last year. Landlords keep seeing this new money, and demanding more of it, and pricing people out of homes.

This is happening worldwide, it’s a deliberate agenda to make sure we all own nothing by 2030. Hence why America (and many other countries) has a wide open border and millions of immigrants and criminals flooding in. It’s about disempowering humanity and reducing our human rights and standards of living in formerly free western countries. They want us all living in a digital prison in abject poverty. Wait til they start the food shortages under the guise of fighting climate change. Fun times.

I’m in a place in my life where I feel lost. I gave everything I had and lost all. I don’t know if I’m ready to let go of all like you had the courage to, but I hope I can; and just as you, I hope I find myself again.
It’s bittersweet in every aspect, but there’s a part of me that’s glad to be able to share this experience with someone I’ll never meet. We are so small, in this vast world, we can’t help to be connected.
    Much Love.

Hey friend. I'm glad to see you start dipping your toes into thinking critically about capitalism, but calling expats in lisbon "refugees of capitalism" isn't the best take. I absolutely understand what you mean: capitalism has convinced us that our lives should be dedicated to working, and a lot of people are waking up from that way of thinking. However, expats have only been able to escape the rat race and move to Lisbon because they are much wealthier than the average Portuguese citizen, and by moving en masse to Lisbon they have driven up the price of real estate and rent so much that Lisbon is officially the most expensive city to live in in Europe. Average rents for a 1 bed apartment range from 1500-2000€, whereas the minimum wage is 700€, and the median wage 900€. People as old as in their late 20s cannot afford to move out. Students from outside Lisbon sleep on floors to study in Lisbon. No one can buy a house. Immigrants sleep 10 in a room.
If these things shock and outrage you as much as they do us, we'd be very happy to have you join us at the protest taking place on Sep 30, starting in Alameda, at 15h. Come join the fight.

    • @eatyourkimchi
      @eatyourkimchi  9 месяцев назад +8

I hear your frustration with my language here, and I can understand that. Expats have privileges that locals don’t have, and in fleeing their own damaging careers, they’re fleeing to places where others are being pushed out. This idea of rich foreigners being refugees cheapens the struggles that refugees go through. I get that, and I thank you for raising that to my attention.
I have one sense of hesitation in me, and I’d love to hear how this sits with you. The only part of the argument I’ve heard from others is one of blaming foreigners for raising the prices of housing, and not holding landlords accountable for jacking up their prices. Foreigners aren’t volunteering to overpay. It’s not like a foreigner saw a T1 priced at 800 a month and volunteered to pay 2k. A friend of mine had their rent raised 33% last year, even when the landlord was made aware that the law only allows for a 2-3% increase.
So, is any of the language in this protest pointed at the landlord’s greed, and just the downright unethical practice of buying up housing and making people pay rent higher than the landlord’s mortgage? I’m sensitive to every country’s sense of xenophobia, as foreigners are always easier to blame.
Please tell me more, or show me where I can learn more about this, and I’d be down to join you on that fight for affordable housing.
In fact, I’ve been wanting to do an episode talking about this issue, and to shed more light on it. Let’s talk more about it. Would you be down to message me on Instagram?

As someone who has also recently moved to Portugal and was a huge fan of your food vlogs I am so excited for this! You have to come to the Fundão area when it’s cherry season! They throw a huge street party in the village of Alcongosta (which is built 700m above sea level on the side of a mountain it’s wild). They have loads of cherry based products as well as big grills and hog roasts, loads of street preformers and traditional drumming bands. We filmed there but we are a bit skint and our equipment couldn’t do it justice haha 😂 also lots of towns that are on the European cheese route in the area and they are hella tasty! This video was stunning btw loved it ❤

    • @eatyourkimchi

Thank you. I'm very interested in the middle path, though I kinda find it elusive. I know the middle of a ruler, because I know the two ends of it, I know the two extremes. What are the two extremes I was in before, and how do I measure if I'm actually middle, or if I'm still shy of the center of the bullseye?
Or, is the middle path even something achievable? It might just be a constant reminder to dial back, to pull back, whenever we feel too invested in one direction, but the instructions there are unclear, too, and that sounds like avoidance of commitment in some ways.

@@eatyourkimchi I think it’s a useful concept to always keep in mind and, like you said, remind ourselves to pull back from extremes, and always be cognizant of the consequences of our actions, because for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. But I wouldn’t overthink it too much because then you risk going into another extreme/pigeon hole.

Really well done video Simon. You’ve come such a long way!
You went much deeper than me with meditation/free will/therapy/narrative self, but I totally relate to what you are saying here. I feel like the path I’ve been on the last 10 years has a similar shape to yours in some ways. Because I agree, like literally everything, it can go too far and stop being a positive practice. My thinking these days is that it is perfectly fine to believe stories, even irrational stories, if they produce positive outcomes and do not harm others. My views on traditional religions has 180’d. Not that I’m religious, but I do not look down upon religious thinking anymore. I really appreciate hearing your perspective here because it’s not one I hear much of these days. Best of luck with the reconnection! I’ll be watching, especially when the videos are this high quality!

Simon, I’ve been a long follower on this channel for years(probably through different accounts#identitycrisis.)I’m really happy to see you be so brave in journeying through your healing process. Healing is ugly, messy, and a beautiful at the same time. Thank you for sharing your journey. I’m happy for you to land where you are at. 🎉

This made me so happy to see, sometimes our inner journey causes us to alienate those around us because we stop becoming relatable in the conquest. I’m excited to see your adventures!!

As Krishnsmurti said,” The ego is under every rock.” “Truth is a pathless land!”-as Simon has discovered in this journey toward maturity-which is endless.❤❤❤

Sounds like you were lost after a very difficult time in your life, which is only natural, but you had to experience it to get to where you are now. I agree with some of the other comments here that as important as spirituality and also religion are, everything is good in moderation and nothing is good in over-consumption. Even too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, right? I was taught this when I was younger and it stuck with me. Helps me understand the world. The world as you said is not black and white but rather a bunch of greys, and that's part of life. Never lose sight of the golden rule when finding your path :) Wishing you the best on your journey!

I have to admit, some of your more recent videos were making me a bit uncomfortable. I felt almost as if I was witnessing a private conversation that I wasn’t supposed to hear.
However, I absolutely loved this video and the discomfort from the previous videos was gone. I also respect that you were willing to admit your previous content went a bit deeper than intended.
As always, I wish you the best in your healing journey, and I look forward to your future uploads.

Nice editing skills. 👍 Your style is different from past videos with your ex, but I like it more. It is more mature and serene. This video makes me want to travel to Portugal. Portugal is not covered well on RUclips so you could develop a niche market if you continue to cover the cuisine and culture of that country.
On another note, I love how dogs teach us how to live in the moment and be joyful. Thanks for showing us how Fudgy does it. :)
