- Welcome back to this week's episode of Shit Roofing.
This has got to be up there with one of the worst roofs I've ever seen!
There's no birds mouth onto the wall plate, a birds mouth transfers the weight of the roof to the wall, by building the roof this way, the weight is transferred into the screw and as you can see, these have all failed.
Now they say that a triangle is the strongest structure, well these triangles are about to collapse.
I have recently being working with a builder who thought it was acceptable to build a roof this way, if it was up to me, I'd have kicked him off site! This roof was so dangerous and was a risk of collapsing onto my customer.

I've always been told to nail a roof together as a nail will bend when the roof contracts where as a screw will snap
And not gun nails either, four or five inch galv spikes driven by hand. For belt and braces I drive a Timberlok structural screw down through the top of the rafter into the plate where the seat cut meets the plumb cut on the birds mouth, 👍💪🔨🇮🇪

I don’t know what you finally decided, but it seems to me that your coach bolt solution might put too much tension on the bottom horizontal member of the truss. It needs a birds mouth to transfer more of the roof load downward into the wall. Without this, the horizontal load will possibly create too much stress on the bottom timber. Needs a structural analysis really.
Should be nails not screwed, nails flex screws don’t.

The full building wants taken down and started again it takes twice as long fucking about than just starting a fresh. Good luck with this one yous need it lol. Cheers for the longer video
