They are in a precarious financial position right now and funds are limited by constraints. There's little income to justify veterinary visits, however, they have been, with time and effort, finding themselves increasingly better versed to handle various aspects of operating their ranch. Pulling a calf is an accomplishment and they have learned a great deal since coming there. They are, like others, having to learn how do more with less. It isn't an easy occupation.

Hi Shari, that can happen with large calves. Not an injury, but just from being contorted....the ligaments just need time to stretch. So, they kinda walk on their "knuckles". See it a lot on large calves and twins.

I grew up on a farm with South Devon cattle, and of our herd of 450 females, we get 3-5 over-sized calf births a year which need assistance. A car jack is always our the 1st port of call for a stuck big calf once the legs are out. Can’t always wait for the Vet when they’re 60 miles out.

I’ve never done any farming but I’m so obsessed with yt videos of the things that happen on working farms/ranches. I think the main take away I’ve seen so far is that some the most “show no mercy to the animals” moments are actually the truest moments of mercy. What you did looks so barbaric with no context, yet, hearing you explain it and show the whole process… it is truly a beautiful moment. You did so much to help the momma and the calf and you saved them while keeping a cool head and never giving up. This is so admirable

Mike, I always love how dedicated you are to the animals on the ranch. And when it's calving season, your care for the cattle really shows. You are out all hours of the night and day checking to see who's getting close to calve. That bull calf and its mom would not have lived if you hadn't been on watch. I'm so excited the calf and mom survived and are doing great! He definitely is a big boy for a newborn. I doubt if one of the older cows could deliver one that big without your assistance. At that time the ranch seemed to have mostly "wild and crazy" cows, which seemed to make your "calving watch" jobs much more difficult, not to mention more dangerous. It's great to see how your calm demeanor (and frequent cake treating) with the cows you are working with now has cultivated more gentle cows and much easier cooperation. Great job guys!

The chain on your calf puller goes above the cows tail on her back that'll help the puller from from sliding around. Also I try and hook the chains above the calf's knuckle then loop it and hook it on its foot so it's pulling from two spots. I don't know if I explained that well enough just how I do things not saying it's the right way.
