- How to change Toyota RAV4 oil and filter 2013-2018. This is how to change the engine oil and oil filter in your 2013-2018 Toyota Rav4. The process is the same for all 2.5L (gasoline) Rav4's (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018).
It's a straight forward process. Very easy to DO IT YOURSELF!
Filters I used: amzn.to/2ybNrw7
Oil for this project: amzn.to/2sOxUx0
It's a bit lengthy, but I break down in detail the how's and why's in regard to the way that I like to get the RAV4's oil changed.
For this video I chose to use Mobil 1's 0W-20 synthetic engine oil. I'm not brand loyal (it's what was on sale).
Please PLEASE, do the responsible thing and dispose of old motor oil in accordance with your local recycling/waste programs, laws, etc.
If you think there is something I should change or that you would like to have clarified, please let me know in the comments below.
Thanks for your time. Get your hands dirty, be safe and enjoy the process!

Mike Barker you remember when rav4 had such a easy oil change ahhh good days
Dominic Alvarez - I think it's still pretty easy. Anybody can do it with a few simple tools!
Torque wrench I assume is 3/8 torque wrench?
You bet it is!
I want to buy this filter for my rv4 2018 and the seller tells me that it did not fit on my rv4 here is the link www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B007QVVV7M/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A15CBTP5BTSNTZ&psc=1 this is the same number answer of seller Hello ghislain côté,
Thank you for your interest. However this part will not fit your RV4
Best Rav4 oil change video I've seen. Using proper tools, proper lubrication and torque specs. Thumbs up!!!
Thanks Little T!!
I love how you say 'out'. Great video!
Thank you for a comprehensive video.
thanks for your video, it's crystal clear!
thank you for this!! i just got a 2017 rav4.
What a cool dude in Canada, eh! He was thorough and safe as they value human life in Canada.
Well done. I have been doing my own oil changes for years but never a Toyota. Bit different but not hard. Helpful giving the torque specs.
Hi Mike. Thank you for sharing this with us. You did an excellent job in the very thorough presentation, enjoyed your narration style as well.
God Bless!
Thanks for including the torque specs on this! Great Canadian accent.
I have an accent?!? Hah! Just kidding. I know the Atlantic Canadian accent comes through pretty strong at times. I'm glad I could help you out. 😀
Wonderful! very detailed video. Keep up the good work.
One of the better videos on this subject.
Thank Human!
Great video. Well done, explained well, and humorous at times.
Thanks Dr. B. Glad to hear the feedback. It would be a potentially boring topic so humour helps 👍😀
This video was very detailed which I loved about it! It made me very confident to do my own and turned out great.
Excellent video! I just purchased a 2015 Rav4 and want to start doing my own oil changes. You made this so easy and very detailed. Thanks a lot!
Plz my comment that meant to be helpful to all of us, CA, USA
Thanks for this video. You made it fun and very professional. All the way down from Miami.
Miami!! Nice city. Thanks for the kind words
Now the I changed the oil on the car, I can head to the bar. It's not far, I need to get out. Great video, great accent!
You got it on the bull's eyes. Great explanation, easy to understand. Thanks.
Hi Mike, thanks for your help. Best video I found for this and I had the Dr. Recommended one beer with lunch
thanks. from Irag.حقيقة فديو .فيه لباق واسلوبك مشوق .
Excellent video, informative with a little humor. You have a good personality.
Very good video, especially the filter housing.
Love the RUSH reference! Great video! Thanks!
You are most welcome. Glad you liked it!
Thanks so much for this video! I luckily came across it and from there was able to change the oil on my friend's 2016 Rav4 without any hiccups. One of the best video's on car repair I have seen (and I watch lots of them). Thanks Again!
Just purchased a 2015 RAV4 and this video is beyond helpful. Very well done! I really appreciate the torque settings.
Stupid, oil filter, who's idea was this.
very nice, Mike. Good job!
Thanks for the detailed and most excellent and entertaining video on the river oil change with the much over complicated and over thought oil filter. Had a beer while I watched and now ready to do the girlfriends ricer4, I mean rav4. Good times and thanks again. We'll get her a ram in due time.😁👍
A cold beer is a technical requirement when doing many task in the garage. Just don't have too many before you start! Lol!
Very good video Sir! Very informative, well explained and funny too! Thanks for posting. Greetings from Puerto Rico
You're welcome! Let me know if there are any other Rav4 videos that you would find helpful.
Hi Mike, just wanted to let you know I successfully did my oil change today and it was thanks to your excellent video, which I watched many times. Thank you for this.
Man... I'm super happy that you were able to get it done!
there is absolutely no reason why this has to be this complicated. Car manufacturers have made this so difficult to force people to send the car to the dealership. Great video though, very comprehensive.
Hey Christian. I would tend to agree with you 😅
Complicated? ...
I believe most cars just use a whole filter cartridge that contains all these parts. Toyota made it so that you only replace the filter itself and some O rings. Perhaps it's to reduce waste. But it really complicates it.
I bought a 2018 Rav 4 from the stealership three months ago. A few days ago I changed the oil. They say every 10,000 miles. Forget that. I do 5,000. It's not like it's their problem once it leaves the lot. Anyway, when I got the cartridge off and the filter, the bottom o-ring was missing. And these guys are supposed to be the experts? I skipped the free oil change due to Covid 19, but I won't be going back, regardless.
Baloney. It's not rocket science.
YOU ARE THE BEST MIKE, THANK
Fantastic tutorial - Thanks so much!
No problem Scott. Any other tutorials you'd like to see?
Good details! Thanks for your time!!!!
I come back to this video every 3000-5000 miles
My oil container says it protects up to 10,000 miles. Should I ignore that and stick with 5,000 miles?
You should go with whatever the manufacturer of your vehicle recommends.
Great information! Very thorough and clear.
Thanks Donna, I'm glad the video helped you out.
Hi Mike, Love your presentation.
Thank you so much!
you are very useful thanks , keep up the video and good work , bruh
Thanks Mafia Vue. Always grateful when people find use in these videos.
Excelent!! Greeting from México! Thanks
Very good video, one of the best ones..thanks
One of the best instructional video out there. Clear, concise and logical. I now have the confidence to tackle this after getting all the necessary tools. Thanks.
Thank you. You are a very cheerful teacher. Everything explained so clearly , we cannot say we didi not understand. Thanks ! Your friendddddd from P.RICO , Edwin Oliveras.
So helpful!!
Thanks for very imformative video so helpful. God bless you.
Great job brother, very thorough!
Thanks!!
Great explanation. Thanks
Great video bought it all the parts from your links. 2017 rav4
That's awesome Michael. Thank you so much! I'm glad the video was helpful.
Great video !
A lot of oil change shops never take the filter plug, they just take the whole filter which saves time, a little messy though, I've been doing the same for 4 years and no problem, although this is a great video if you want to follow the exact Toyota specs for That I say A+
Well described and safe method to change oil.
Thanks a lot , It's wonderful lesson .
Plz my comment that meant to be helpful to all of us, CA, USA
Yeah Your very good and a excellent job!!! A lot of attention to detail AWESOME you can change my oil any time.
Hahaha thanks Ron!
Great video. I've watch about 15 video's and this was the only video showing Torque specification. I purchased the Haynes manual and I was confused on oil torques, clearly a misprint, oil filter plug 110 ft pounds. You state 9, I'm guessing the book should have stated 10, not 110. So I am very thankful for your video.
Awesome video & entertaining!!
Thanks Tony! I try to be entertaining... Emphasis on "try!"
I like this vedio . Thanks alot .
You helped me changed the oil in my car... It was you.
Kind of humid for some people. But I love it here! I can do my oil changes rear round 😂
Excellent video. I just finished my first oil & filter change on my '014 RAV4. This was by far the best how-to video I found. Unlike the demise of points & condensers and carburetors, I'm not a fan of that of the old canister-type filter. But the extra hassle with the cartridge & housing design is not a huge deal. Anyway, the other videos are probably okay but the guys mumble and use ambiguous phrases like "this thing." This one is a keeper. Thank you very much.
Thank you Mike
Great stuff
Ты крут bro !!! Cпасибо за видео, твой английский понятен
nicely done video. Thx!
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped you out!
Damn good video
Very detailed oil change. Well done! I just remember 30/20/10 ft lbs for the torque specs to keep it simple.
Robmar that's a great trick to remember them!
I just use 9, 18 & 27
Thank you, sir! :)
Solid vid!
Thanks Eric. My offer still stands to make a wicked fun video with you!
you are the best.
Thanks Pedro!
You’re de man!!
nicely done. thank you regards
I wanted to like this video like 5 times lol
I don't usually comment, but when I do - it's because you are EXCELLENT!!! ♫♪♫♪♫
Hahahahahaha thanks! 😆
@@Mike_Barker Hey! You're active! I feel honored to txt with you. Would you mind telling me where you found the torque specifications? I can't find any literature on it. You're awesome brother!
@@brianking7462 they are printed on the box that the oil filter comes in (if you buy the filter from Toyota). I also found the info online, but can't remember exactly where. 🤔
@@Mike_Barker Lovely! That trumps the conflicting values I've seen on the interwebs. Thanks buddy! You're the best!
I like to see you clean inside oil housing which most people don’t do it.
Hey mate great video!
Are you able to do a oil maintenance reset light video on a 2015 RAV4 diesel please?
“You don’t even need this video!”
Continues to watch 😂
Good job. 👍
Thanks Jose!
Very well done
Thanks Lois. I appreciate the kind words.
Just wanted you to know that this was a great video. First time doing an oil change on a 2017 rav 4 and your video showed everything to expect . My oil change went exactly like your video said including draining the entire oil jug . Even though it's my first time on a RAV4 it's still went easier than both of my Ford trucks 03 and 13, that like to piss oil everywhere on a oil change. I have a 2010 Corolla so the paper cartridge is not new to me . Thanks
You are absolutely hilarious. Very informative as well. Thank you for the video. This will be my first time changing the oil in my Rav4. They've made it so difficult.
Hey there yellowbus. It's an extra couple of steps, but I'm the grand scheme of things it's still a pretty easy task (easier than rebuilding engines!)
A couple of other tips are it's always better to do a hot oil change to get out most of that residual oil and if you're really meticulous about the internal parts of your motor, it would never hurt to run a litre of cheap oil through again to flush out the residual oil in the pan especially if you're propping your car up on an angle, like he did. And to be even more meticulous some people have been known to use magnetic drain plugs to catch the metal parts throughout your oil. And this also extends the life of your oil filter dramatically and also helps in the first few engine flushes of a brand new motor.
Clean, good job!
Thanks Nikolay! Anything else you'd like to see a video of?
I have the same gen. RAV4 with 67K miles on it Mike, trying to do "Do-It-Yourself" regular checks and maintenance, but without garage it's hard to cover big chunk where you have to lift car up. Would be nice if you could make video or series of video which covers regular check ups every 5K miles followed by Toyota Maintenance Guide, plus when driving in special conditions (e.g. inspect ball joints, drive shafts, etc..)
Thanks and good luck in new project videos!
Ah good ideas! Regular checks can be done easily on a lot of things. Thanks for the input!
This is by far, the best oil change instruction for this series Rav4 on RUclips! My 2014 is a daily driver and I commute about 500 miles per week, so I do a lot of oil changes on it, I come back and watch this video prior to heading out to the garage every time! It serves as great instruction and reminds me of the order of operations and the torque values. Many thanks for sharing this one Mike!
Wow, thanks!
Thanks for the in detail video... replace the plastic filter housing with a toyota metal one - toyota part 15620-31060 for about $25.00. Plastic housing can crack.....also I think it takes the 4.73L for the fill up.
i think toyota has a tech service bulletin on the oil viscocity... but im not sure... they do have updated oil change info on the camry... fyi...
This was one of the best oil change videos. I got from this Gloves, Googles, instructions. A sense of humor. Do you do parties? J/k
Hahaha oil changes aren't the most popular party tricks 😂
Thanks! U r like diy god!
Hey! I'm glad that you're finding the rav4 videos helpful. 🖒
As you mentioned, have never been able to get that drain plug cap off the oil filter. When I try to ratchet it off, the filter assembly itself loosens up. So all my oil changes have been done with that plug never coming off.
Thanks sir
How is doing now.
I could hear the cold start rattle which I have on my 17 rav4, is there any issue with that?
Great video good work. Can you tell us and show us how you change the fuel filter? that would be great.
Great video! Could you please list all the tools with dimensions?
Great video, one of the best I have seen. If you can't change your oil in a Rav4 after watching this, Jiffy Lube!!! Great job.
Hahahahahaha thanks Jerry!
Jiffy Lube? Not me. Not ever. I wouldn't trust them with my car...
I like how comprehensive this video is! Thank you!
No Moses .... Thanks to all you guys for watching! Just glad it helped you.
Thanks for the post, helpful. I really DO NOT like those Canister Oil Filter setups, next car I will make sure it comes with a regular type filter.
Hopefully the Rav4 2019 will have a regular type set-up !
I'm learning to live with it. We will see what direction Toyota goes. I have a feeling the cartridge style isn't going anywhere though...
I believe the 2019 model has reverted to a spin on canister filter instead of the cartridge system.
Whoa! Very interesting if it's true that they've done that.
Great vid! Can you please do a video on brakes and rotors? Thanks!
Hey Drew, I can put that on my list of video to cover!
Do you have a video for the transmission fluid ?
Excelente,🤗
Great video as always. Are you doing any more videos? How’s your baby???
I’ve smashed 6 extracting tools including the one from Toyota,it’s taken 4days of trying ,in the end I had to use three foot exstention bar and a lot of effort to remove the alloy fitted one from the factory, so on refitting do not over tighten ,and change oil every six months regardless of mileage then it shouldn’t seize up
Where or what brand are your ramps you used in making of this video??
I noticed aboot it too. It's all aboot the details.
Why can't they do the engine oil filter above? The 2 2015+ Subarus I have the oil filter on top, theirs was on bottom in earlier models like my 2003 Corolla. Much cleaner now than than the horizontal mount in my 97 Corolla.
Thanks for the video.
Quick question: how long do you need to run the engine after adding new oil and before checking the level?
I love your video by the way and I've watched it through probably 8 times so far in preparation for doing my first oil change.
