MR-ed in 2022. A lot of people give the conscript force crap for being softer than the previous generations. While I do not entirely disagree, I think people seriously underestimate the resilience of the nation. We may complain a lot, whine a lot, and speak poorly about ourselves, but I do sincerely belief that in times of crisis, Singaporeans will do what needs to be done and rally together. We've done so during SARS, we've done so during Covid. And if our home and families experience an existential threat, we'll prove to the world we're worthy of the name "Lion City".
I am a proud member of the 1967 pioneer batch of conscripts. The SAF has gone a long way from the 120mm Light Templar Mortar to what it is today. Kudos to our late Father Lee Kuan Yew.
I was enlisted in the 80s into ITD (Infantry Training Depot in P. Tekong) 2nd Gen SAF transition away from the poisonous shrimp into the porcupines~ dolphin strategy & the rest of my NS & reservist was with the Republic of Singapore Air Force starting of from Tengah then to Paya Lebar Airbase. I miss my air force days... Proud to have served & I love my island home called Singapore! Hoorah!
Thank God we had very good, honest and far sighted leaders under the leadership of Mr. Lee Kwan Yew. They sacrificed their life to make Singapore what it is today. I pray and hope that today’s generation of Singaporeans will continue to improve and keep his policies and rules intact. God bless Singapore
Singapore's strategy is diplomacy and deterrence. One can argue if the military capability is really as good as on paper. Making powerful allies and having big guns does make some think twice before messing with them.
This country's military can protect and defend well into the future. What they have and use are amongst the best in the world. They train all year round and in different locations around the world for if and whenever the time comes, they are ready

Singapore army definitely has some of the most advanced weapons in the world , for a small country. LKY was definitively very discerning in seeing the need to build up it's army, and kudos to him for that vision. In terms of weapon technology, Singapore has certainly done a great job in building it up to be a effective deterrent, at least on paper. But a war, cannot be fought on paper alone, and depending totally alone on someone sitting behind a laptop, and a game joystick, guiding drones or artillery fire. You will eventually require to engage the use of foot soldiers and also soldiers driving the tanks and APCs. This is where the big question lies... do we think the soldier's of today's singapore army , will have the guts, the determination and the intensity to stand the ground in a firefight??? The singapore army , especially the current one, has never been in a real firefight. The singapore society is a fairly affluent one , and the young men of today were born into upper middle class and even wealthy families. When bullets starts flying, shells starts raining down , will these young men stand their ground? You can't fight a war only by standing at a distance from your enemy, and use missiles, long range artillery... You are gonna need to send your troops into physically attack/secure the target. On paper, Singapore appears really strong... but when the boots hit the ground, will it stand it's ground? For countries like Ukraine, their people are literally fighting for their lives and their country from an invasion, and they have proven themselves over the 10 years of war with Russia. Israel, another country fighting for it's survival, has an army where their soldiers have experience in fighting a war. Singapore , has never really been tested before in war, and it's mainly a conscripted army, where a large majority of them are from upper middle class families, enjoyed a very carefree life, and really been forced to serve the army by the conscription law. Compared with the USA and UK army, and other Nato nations, the soldiers are mostly volunteers, paid professionals, who don't generally come from well to do family backgrounds. They are usually the ones that wanna make it in the army, as it provides them an option for a career. Undoubtedly, singapore is strong on paper... however, if the deterrence does not work, and the nation has to go to war, with the current generation of young men, will it stand it's ground?
Dude, u r naive to think sg military has no real combat experience. Do u think mindef will announce or publish everything they have done? U think u have the chance to know top secret and national secret? U need to understand sg is conscripted soldiers country. Will u let ur son go NS if they say they go war in other country? Will u support the gov that send troops to war? Think pls.
I just want to say that when I was serving my ns in the late 90s, the main setup and mission was to be able to go north to keep our water supply flowing. This mattered a lot as their pm then, was always using us as the bogeyman to distract them away from the fact that he was busy getting rich and helping his son get rich, while his country went into decline. For some reason, there was lots of money in their economy but somehow they keep disappearing into projects that did not do much for their people. Anyway, there is a book that a British guy wrote, I think it’s titled defending the lion city, which has a good amount of information about all this. Today, or more like after 9/11, I believe there is a shift towards more than this, like a general security vs small terrorist groups and other possible sources of danger and insecurity.
Ukraine believes that Leopard 2 and HIMAS rockets can change the outcome of the war with Russia. SAF acquired these weapons years before. Foresight in getting the right weapons 💪💪
I disagree. Most large scale conflicts are often fought with conscripts that just graduate from boot, hence the old term calling them "90 day wonders". Singapore, with their permanent conscription, has a much longer time to train conscripts so their main forces are actually of a higher quality than other country's average. It's only vs those militaries with a history of constant combat experience that it falls short, most other militaries are like them, not having fought in conflicts for decades.

Wrong country man. Singapore went in to 100% conscription, not the selective conscription of other countries. EVERYONE went in, gangsters or otherwise. Your 'rags to riches' story might work in another country but not for Singapore.
Larger than France and England's. The video only talks about the "regular army" but in Singapore, that term is very nebulous because their civilian life is so tightly intertwined with the military that everyone male has served in the armed forces before. This "hidden army" numbers about one million and by numbers, can at least compare to the US's active duty numbers (1 million) or China's (2 million). People severely underestimate how many men a country can conscript if it went all in and Singapore went all it.
