Do you think Singapore's military can really defend the country?
No, they don't.
@@rayden5508 Yes, they do not to have to defend their country because they are part of China. They are Chinese and Singapore is a province of China.

@@ethiehetherington5086Let me guess? You're a banana and got your geography educ7 and history education in USA?
No. I don't think so. Do Yo know Rusian war ? Now. War is complex
You'd be bit naive to think that any conflict with Singapore would specifically be confined to the island state. The Singaporean military doctrine is to conduct a pre-emptive strike before the aggressor gets the opportunity to attack them on their own soil; meaning that, before an artillery shell could even land on the island state, they would've long started the offensive.
Any rockets can and will be intercepted by their world-class SAM systems and of course having one of the strongest air force in the region, does help significantly.
Spot on and almost accurate analysis. Our military structure and strategic are very similar with the IDF or heavily influenced by them . Not many people know there’s a mutual understanding between our northern neighbor that not to deployed any heavy artillery at the radius of 5KM or at least inform us in advance the repositioning and reasons or any of their intention , otherwise misunderstanding may occur that may result in miss firing, it seems unreasonable or unbelievable but it was negotiated and come to an agreement on the eve of our departure from Malaya federal.
In 6th August 1991 (3days before our national day) , 3 battalions of artillery was moved “unexpectedly” from their base to Gelang Patah which is about 30km away from Singapore, at the same time they have division live firing exercises with the Indonesian marines and artillery units in that area , this scale was never deployed before and not even this close to our border without first informing us early about their military exercise.
After numerous attempts on contacting them for clarification fall into deaf ears, our MOD decided to activate the mobilization. I was ordered to return back to base at about 4pm (I was already a reserve service man) with full battle order and by 8pm I’m already reported to by base camp and within short period the entire unit assembled with full strength and we draw our ammo because I’m a 106mm gunner , our M40 106mm was ship out from the bunker storage with live ammunition. My base was 8km away from another camp named Sembawang camp which still have almost half a battalion of Malaysian troops stationed there , they were surrounded by our infantry and commandos & later they were all disarmed and being ordered to assemble at their canteen for further instructions. My compatriots and myself sat in our vehicles for 17 long hours in full battle order , only information was if they shut the water pipe line (one of the 2 main reasons for this saga) , it’s considered decoration of war and my brigade will start with first strike and strive to Batu Bahat which is about 110km away within 36hrs , this is where their main strength if their entire military forces are .
This saga ends when their then PM Datok Mahathir finally pick up his call and announce it’s a miss misunderstanding and miscommunication after all , their exercises was call off on 8th august and all troops were withdrawn.
The only Asean country with offensive weaponry . . . .
We should expand our territory. Learn from American, Israeli and Russian.

One item not mentioned is the Five Power Defense Arrangement. The United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to consider response options to any real or potential threats to peace in the region. This agreement was in response to the United Kingdom withdrawing her forces in 1971. It should be noted there is no automatic mobilization or coaliton of forces by any of the agreed powers. I should like to think that the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand will exercise all military options appropriate to the crisis.
SAR-21 the standard rifle is designed and produced locally...the Terrex ICV , Bionix and Hunter IFVs are SG designed and produced as well. The Endurance Class LSTs, Formidable class frigates and the Independence class LMVs were built in Singapore. Singapore also produces the IGLA MANPADS under license locally. SG is also capable of meeting more than 75% of its water demands from its own domestic sources. The government has also already set a blueprint towards the issue of food security. Depend on the US military? Haha we depended on the British military eight decades ago look at how that turn out. SG is located at the choke point of one of the most important waterway in the world making it strategic for any major power seeking an upper hand in a global conflict(the Japanese certainly did think so 8 decades ago).

Singapores military is very advanced, especially compared to other surrounding countries. Its biggest weakness however is numbers in terms of total equipment, weapons/ammunitions and most importantly manpower in which it is the smallest within the main asean countries, it can certainly punch above its weight class but staying in a protracted, attritional war would not be sustainable for its population
Singaporean here. I'm more worried abt the crude old fashion artillery pieces that foreign armies nearby has. This would force our army to go on the offensive, this would the turn our geography into a disadvantage
It goes to show that if your country is rich, you can have the best military equipment that money can buy.
If you run a relatively clean country with the best brains and almost zero telorence.for corruption, you will have the money to secure your future.
The difference between Singapore and its neighbours is that everything in Singapore works. Planes fly, and submarines dive. People actually do real work.
I am from Singapore, And what you said about we dont produce weapons is only partially correct as we build and modify the weapons bought over. We have also made the SAR-21 which is a semi automatic rifle produce by the MINDEF or otherwise known as the Ministry of Defence.

technically, our military's defence is there for show, to avoid conflicts and not intended to be used definitely (as with most countries). it's there as a worst case scenario because we learnt from our past that we can't lean on others for our country's security.
In 2019, The Malay Times conducted interviews across Malaysia with several thousand Malaysians, alongside an online survey involving tens of thousands more Malaysians. The results were absolutely shocking, over 78% of Malaysians expressed that Malaysia would not dare go to war with Singapore due to Malaysia's significant reliance on Singapore as well as inferior military compared to Singapore. Approximately 11% of Malaysians mentioned they do not know what to do if Singapore were to attack Malaysia. Another 10% of Malaysians stated that they would flee Malaysia if Malaysia ever dare declared war with Singapore. Only less than 1% of Malaysians indicated they would stay and fight Singapore.
In light of these findings, from a strategic standpoint, one could argue-drawing from Sun Tzu's The Art of War-that Singapore has achieved the "ultimate victory" because Malaysia's internal instability would lead to collapse even before any formal declaration of war with Singapore, sparing Singapore from firing a single gunshot or expending any resources at all and just sit down, relax, drink a cup of tea maybe and see how Malaysia be defeated without spending any resources at all.
Ok there is som truth about the survey. However there's another theory here....Both these countries will never want war. S'pore's top priority is to make money while M'sia prefers to toil on race & religious issues......😂😂

Singapore does produce her own weapons, look at the SAR21, bionix, primus etc.
Depend on the US? Nope. Never. Since 1941, we learned the bitter lesson that ultimately we can rely on no one else to fight and die for us. Hence, today Singapore has NO allies. Not even one. The closest is the FPDA, where partner nations will CONSULT if any one is attacked, and no doubt issue very angry words at the aggressor. Yes, the core to the country's defence is indeed diplomacy. A very careful dance between all the major powers and countries in the region. Not no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, only permanent interests, as I think Gladstone once said of England, but for Singapore it is permanent interests with everyone as friends as far as possible. I'll just contribute some common sense views on this subject.
War is serious business and not some abstract notions about weapons, tactics and who has what and where. For most countries, war with their adversaries have some trigger or unresolved long-standing issues. As far as Singapore's future is concerned, there aren't many issues that might trigger a kinetic exchange with her immediate neighbors.
It is unrealistic to think Singapore can defend itself against ALL other countries; eg China, USA or say Indonesia. We simply lack the military capacity to prevail against such adversaries.
Our best defense system is actually our capacity to generate wealth and presserve wealth - for many wealthy individuals and / or countries. It makes no sense for any say an Indonesian Leader to call for hostilities against Singapore because the vested interests in his nation wouldn't allow him to even think about it. Singapore IS the piggy bank for many and MANY significantly rich folks and organisations.
For the sake of entertaining the folks at Behind Asia; lets say a nearby country found some motivation + logistical support from a Godfather country. Let's name the country wanting to attack us as Malaysia and Saudi Arabia is financing it. A formidable challenge indeed for our military & political strategists. Let's even throw nationalistic sentiments like Singapore was a Malay settlement before Stamford Raffles took it out of the Johore Sultanate's hands and Malaysians are seething to reclaim the real estate.
There is no price too high to deter aggression and war has long lasting repercussions. So we and like-minded allies would attempt to negotiate Malaysia away from a war-as-the-only-solution stance. Money is a good motivator too - on the condition they understand we are not sucumbing to any form of blackmail.
If that is insufficient to disuade them; I'm pretty confident we have mechanisms to unlock certain weapons systems for delivery to our doorsteps. Contingents of ground troops from Australia, New Zealand, Brunei and even Japan might well be en-route to us under UN auspices. US may even station some batteries of Patriot missiles or sail a Carrier Task Force into our waters.
I seriously doubt ANY of our neighbors have the moxy to deal with a Carrier Task Force. The only exception might be if WE declared war on China - as in The People's Republic of China. The reasons for us to do so are infinitesimaly small to the point of none at all.
The ball game is to persuade our adversary it will not be a cake walk to attack Singapore. To deter them to the point that their leaders wake up every morning and never harbor the thought - " today will be a good day to invade and take over Singapore ".
Because he will have to weigh his motivation against waging war with not just Singapore, but many worthy adversaries.
Seriously, I doubt even China would harbor the thought of blockading Singapore. That would only be feasible AFTER China has colonised every country from Laos to Malaysia and have a 9 million man army stationed in the state of Johore and staged combined arms exercises for 5 years or more. Then we are out-matched and out-gunned.
I hope that have slaked the blood lust of you folks. It's not gonna happen.
Exactly, for a superpower like China to bypass every single SEA country to blockade SG, the logistic train will be extremely stretched and difficult to defend. That is, unless every other country falls before they reach SG to realise that. But SG will be at war probably due to FPDA.

As a Singaporean, i can say I've learned more about Singapore's military in this short video than all the social studies classes I've attended combined.
Even Israel Dome cannot defend itself well enough and with its massive lifetime experiences in war. Pre-emptive strikes cannot be conducted as you like as it may infringe air space rights of other countries and it can be considered as an aggressor. Russia also started the war with pre-emtive strikes and labelled the aggressor! With cluster bombs, chemical bombs, nukes and advanced weaponries, No country can say it can protect itself especially when space is the next launchpad for military
Singapore's neighbours are not the threat. For them to bring down Singapore would be like cutting off their arm or leg. Moreover, what is there to gain for any neighbour in conquering tiny Singapore? There will be capital flight and no natural resources to take over. Singapore's financial hub is needed by its neighbours, and as stories have emerged recently, it is also a stepping stone for the very rich in SEA to take their money out from their own countries. As it is now, In SEA, Indonesia will become the economic backbone with Singapore continuing to be its trading and financial hub. ASEAN losing Singapore would be bad for ASEAN members. The most apparent threat would be the People's Republic of China. Taking over Singapore and having a military / naval base there would be a great strategic feat for China. By now, China probably knows all the details of SIngapore's military and defensive systems. Can China take over Singapore through military force? What do you think? As for the Five Power Defense Agreement, it is merely a consultative grouping, and a relic of the British Commonwealth. Upon an attack by China, Singapore's closest ally Malaysia can't do much. Malaysia's economy has dove-tailed with China's quite a lot, so it would be difficult to respond. Malaysia's military capability can't do much. Australia, the UK and New Zealand are too far away.
