    Hi, Can you explain the white stuff that you cool your steel in please? Way back we used two slabs of steel to cover out hot steel in so it can cool slowly, would this be about the same idea? I am about to make a knife out of leave spring, will be my first try.

    • @jk.projects
      @jk.projects  2 года назад

      It's called perlite, you can get it at garden stores(or somewhere similar). It's a great insulator and it's exactly used as you said, to cool the steel down slowly

    Your belt grinder is made of really thing tube steel you should make one of 1/4in thick walled tube steel

      @@jk.projects great, watch House Works video on the one he makes you dont have to make it so it goes horizontally either i wouldent, if i wanted a horizontal grinder i would make a dedicated one and not a combo one like he makes

    • @jk.projects
      @jk.projects  2 года назад

      @@blacksteel2434 I actually took alot of inspiration from the revolution 2x72, funny thing is my grinder does go horizontally aswell I just rarely use. I wish I could have 2 grinders, but that is the problem with a tiny workshop, you can only fit so many tools.

    I think there may have been something wrong with your ferric chloride solution it looked really muddy and it should be almost a translucent amber color

    • @jk.projects
      @jk.projects  2 года назад

      The acid is not the problem. The issua is I used leaf spring(5160 steel) and that is a deep hardening steel. Hard to get a nice hamon with it, but not impossible. Thanks for watching

    • @DNSforge
      @DNSforge 2 года назад

      @@jk.projects not talking about your hamone I think your ferric chloride is contaminated it shouldn’t look like that at all

  • @pawekozielski2422
    @pawekozielski2422 2 года назад

    The hammon is not clear. Try to thin the mass and apply it in layers. Each layer must dry. It will stick better. No wire will be needed. The oil will not get under the insulation and the hammon should come out clearer. I had the same problem. I like the wood. What is this wood? Generally good job.

    • @jk.projects
      @jk.projects  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching my video! Yeah this was the first time attempting a differential hardening so I got alot to learn, but I still liked the dark look. I have no idea what wood, just some scrap I had.

    • @lorneclose7312
      @lorneclose7312 2 года назад

      Wood looks like pine not generally considered hard enough for scales unless stabilised. Pine has a tendency to be a sponge for moisture
