Six White Mississippi "Goon Squad" Cops Get Lengthy Prison Sentences for Torturing Black Men

In Mississippi, six former sheriff's deputies have been sentenced to between 10 and 40 years in prison for raiding a home and torturing, shooting and sexually abusing two Black men, Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker, in January 2023. The six former deputies, all of whom are white, called themselves the "Goon Squad" and have been linked to at least four violent attacks on Black men since 2019. Two of the men attacked and tortured by the group subsequently died. To discuss the case and the verdict, we're joined by Eddie Parker and attorneys Malik Shabazz and Trent Walker. "Never have we seen this many police officers sentenced to this kind of time in one week," says Shabazz, who calls the verdict "historic." Jenkins, Parker and Shabazz are currently suing the Rankin County Sheriff's Department over its track record of civil rights violations and racist targeting of Black residents.

What i find unbelievable, that department has 67 employees. Now, remove the supervisors, civilian employees, and correction officers working the jail, that leaves, I'm guessing here, 35 patrol officers. 4 of them were members of this "goon squad " and the sheriff didn't know anything about it. At that, it should be taken into account that there is a big difference between a 10 year sentence and a 40 year sentence. My logical reasoning tells me that, and I don't mean this to sound prejudice in any way, the fact that the six officers are white (caucasian), and they had misused and abused their authority over two black men by heinously assaulting, sexually assaulting, sexually assaulting with a foreign object, and shooting one of the men, and then tried to cover up their acts by planting drugs in the house, and the fact that the trial will most likely be held in that county (a predominantly "white" county), that these six psychopaths/former officers will most likely get 10 year sentences.

As a Mississippian (from Jackson) this brings me so much joy. Some sort of justice for these men is something we’re not used to seeing. It’s always been a known thing amongst anyone from Jackson not to drive in Rankin County at night and I say that as a white guy! I can only imagine how terrifying it was for these men. Mississippi has a long ways to go, but at least can take some pleasure in knowing these good ol’ boys are off the streets.

Every time a teenager steals an IPhone from a mall on the other side of the country I see it on my local news.
This case has only reached my local news since the trial has finally finished.

This made me physically ill. Thank you to the judge, the attorneys, the families, and most importantly the victims for having the incredible courage and bravery to come forward and tell the world the reality of what happened to them. This was a service to everyone: the world, in the USA, their local community, and to all victims of police brutality.

I can't imagine that cop blew off the victim's jaw with the intention of NOT committing murder. That's insane.
These cops were also previously involved in two murders! Along with other attacks on members of the public. This needs to be a national investigation and others at senior positions in the police department involved also need to be arrested and prosecuted
Those sentences that these animals received are nowhere near what they deserve! I have actually seen police do things like that many years ago with absolutely no accountability, this what these cops did is nothing compared to what has been done in the past, and I wonder if all of the cases that they were involved in, should be reviewed and dismissed!
