As a boy I think I've understood this movie and I loved it. But as a father I found it unbearable and scene like this just kills me. Every father tries to protect the innocence of his children: let's make sure, and let's work, for those things never happens again.
That's exactly the point about the relation between the father and the son, during all the movie he try to explain everything with a touch of fantasy completely hiding the evil, expecially when he act like german-traductor to make sure his son uderstand the rules of the field without making him hating them. Real fathers here!!
For real visigoths weren t germans or at least (cause their language for real was a german language) they never lived in german. Goths are people coming from east (ukraine, romania) that after invasion lived in italy (ostrogoths) and in spain (visigoths). But i think Benigni didn t want to exlude living people from his bookshop, to intend germans he coud say "huns", like alied called german people during the two ww
Doing one’s best to prevent childhood trauma! These parents are sooooo very wise, competent, committed, rigorous, gentle, and giving without the need for any reward other than their precious child’s innocence! And it comes so easily to them, so naturally, that I suspect they too may have been raised that way ... (And yes, I know it’s drama, not even historical fiction.)
While this scene shows Guido for the first time on screen shielding his son from the evil of the world, it also really shows how silly and idiotic it is to really believe race is superior or inferior to others.

Something interesting that not many people got is that The Visigoths were an early Germanic people who along with the Ostrogoths constituted the two major political entities of the Goths within the Roman Empire. When he says Visigoths I believe it meant Germans.
No, I think it's not related at all. Actually I've always thought that he chose the Visigoths because they don't exist anymore as a real tribe, so "discriminating" them isn't racism, unlike in the other shops where Jews aren't allowed to go in. The fact that he didn't choose to mention a modern population or ethnicity or any other group of people is just another way to protect his son without offending or hurting anyone else, as no Visigoth exists anymore. He could have chosen the Huns, the Langobards or the Normans as well and it would have been the same
@@camillacolucci7576 The fact that people think racism is a thing is even more astounding. As you properly said: 'ethnicity', not race - which is something people don't understand. People are, in my opinion, reinforcing the idea of races by calling it 'racism'. This will always create prejudices nonetheless of the person.
