Yes, very good setup. I have done the same thing here in Michigan....other than the plug from the electric meter...we had to install an on and off switch box. Did an excellent job explaining everything and yes...it's costing, but we'll worth it. Have a wonderful day again thank you for sharing...this will definitely help people to know how and what to do.👍😁
Great video, lots of peace of mind with your setup. One suggestion is to convert your generator to dual fuel, propane and gas. Propane can be stored indefinitely, and gas can only be stored so long before it goes bad. Carburetor conversion kits can be bought online and takes less than an hour to install. If you're buying a new generator its worth paying a little extra for the dual fuel. Note the generator wattage output is less on propane than gas.
How's she goin'? Having a generator is great. Having a generator that can be quickly connected to the house is even better. And connecting the generator safely for you and the linesmen who are out in the bad weather working hard to restore you power, is the ultimate solution!!! Nice set up. Thanks for sharing. Take care!!
Good video. Just a suggestion -- I would not leave that genny in the garage for an extended period of time with just one door open. We did that one time at the farm and a friend nearly died after spending only one minute in there looking for a tool. And he could not talk to tell us what happened. We did not know it was the fumes until we took him to the ER. The fumes will gather at the ceiling and force the clean air out the door and you can take 5 or 6 breaths without realizing that you are breathing in nitrous oxide. And 6 breaths is all it takes to make you really really sick.
Thanks, Mike. I'm exploring other options for a place to put it. I usually have the man door, plus 2 of the three garage doors open. But I now understand the risk.
Brother, this is the best video you will ever make because it is going to SAVE YOUR LIFE. You can NOT run your generator in your garage! Many people have died from this. Yes, you have the door open and the exhaust is pointed out the door and even if you have the large door open as well, that is not even close to good enough. Even if the generator was outside the garage with the door open you would still be in great danger. People have died from just having the generator to close to the house and the carbon monoxide gets in through the eve. Please take a moment to reflect on this and make a change, we love your videos and we don't want to loose you buddy. :)
Thanks! We had always read that an unattached garage with the doors open was okay. For example - this is on a generator website (www.novec.com/Safety/GeneratorSafety.cfm#:~:text=Exhaust%20from%20the%20generator%20contains,door%20completely%20open%20for%20ventilation) : "Ventilate - Adequate ventilation is critical. Exhaust from the generator contains carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas that can be deadly! Always run the machine outdoors. To keep the unit out of the winter elements, it is acceptable to use a generator in an open space in a garage, but only if you leave the garage door completely open for ventilation."
Great! I had similar setup with color coded breakers at my previous house. At our new (old) house, there no such thing. Even worst, many breakers are not even identified.... This being on 3 different panels! The setup is good, it's only missing decent identification. There is one good thing about it, it's a 400 amps supply, that begins with a main selector. So if I hook a generator to the whole house, it is safe to do so. I am only missing a large generator! For now, I have a 7500W generator, so I should be OK to identify the essential breakers. Thanks for sharing!
My Christmas gift this year is what I have been waiting for so long - a generator! Thanks Chad, great information and perfect timing. And you have the best guest appearances by people and pups 🤗

glad i saw this video since it looks like an easy and safe way to setup a house .. I have my Business on a automatic backup and it was costly so. This what you share is not that bad since i have spare generators already so the cost of the generlink is not a terrible thing and all i would need is water and heat for winter
good job on the video. I have a generlink and will be testing it tomorrow with my neighbor who also has a generlink awitch. hope it works FOR us. thanks, Ed
I too have a total electric home. We use a central fireplace system as our main heat source. Our generator shed is just around the corner from the meter. However, I have a transfer switch. I can run it but my wife gets confused. If you don’t mind... I’ll replace my page of instructions with your colored dots and maybe she can do it too!!! Thanks for stopping by my site. I have subscribed to yours and will peruse it when I get a chance.
Nice setup...I also recently bought a GenerLink in 2020! I think they are a little cheaper now..i purchased the 40 amp with surge suppression and Bluetooth for.about 950, and the electrician charged about 150 for the installation. It took about 8 weeks to get it, since they were on back order. I use it with a Ford 11050/9000 generator to run my well and furnace among other things, usually during hurricane season here in NC. I also color code my breakers, but I like the way you did yours better, so I may do it using your method. Mine is labeled on the door panel, rather than inside. Anyway...nice setup and video! Stay safe!
Hi jgetsy! Thanks for commenting. I wondered if they were cheaper now. Really nice that the new ones have surge suppression and Bluetooth. I wish ours had the Bluetooth. I imagine that means you can check the load on your phone and also see when the power from the electric company is back? It is so nice to have the backup power. You'll love it. I do really like the metallic Sharpie marks on my breakers. It makes it quick and easy for me (or my wife) to see which breakers to flip. Thanks again for watching and commenting!
@@PurpleCollarLife yeah...Bluetooth was an extra 75 and allows you to check status on your phone for when the utility power has been restored. It is a nice feature when the weather is bad outside..

Great video I didn't know the power company could do this for you. The cord would be quite expensive for me , for whatever reason our meter is on a pole about 100 yards from the house
A couple questions sir. How much gasoline(gallons) per hour does the generator use during a power outrage? Also if you don't store extra gasoline on hand and the gasoline stations lose power also to pump gasoline then what do you do for fuel?
Great questions! The amount of gas used depends on the size of generator, the load you're putting on it (how many amps/watts you are using). I am honestly not sure how much ours uses. The power is typically not out for days at a time here - at least ever since I purchased the generator. :) I keep several 5 and 6 gallon tanks full of fuel for emergencies.
I’ve seen people talk about this I don’t understand how do you get it installed.. They say u can do it yourself but don’t u have to turn the power off and power company has to put a seal on it
Do you have to turn off the main 100 amp breakers on the electrical panel along with all the circuit breakers on the electrical panel before starting your generator to run power through the GenerLink?
Hello - No, you don't turn the main breakers off. The GenerLink is out at the meter, and prevents back-feeding. You leave your main breakers on, since the generator feeds through the meter and the main line coming in.
@@PurpleCollarLife Very nice. I have never heard of the Generlink system. I will look into that. Now we just need to get some solar for you so you're not needing to burn gas during those power outages. ;-) It looks like you are well prepared!
Nice set-up. Did you look into an "inter-lock kit" at all? It is a metal bracket that you install in the circuit panel that will only allow either the main breaker or the new breaker that you would install for the generator to be "live" at once. You would need to run a new outlet and 10/3 gauge wire, and install the new 30 amp breaker. A little more work than your set-up, but less money overall, I believe. Also, do you have a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector? Is the garage where you run the generator attached to the house? They say you should never run it inside a garage, even if the doors are open. I personally run mine under our porch roof, which they say you shouldn't do either. :-) But, I don't ever run it over night while sleeping. And, I have 2 CO detectors. Thanks again!!
We do have a few battery powered carbon monoxide detectors in the house. The garage is not attached to the house. We do leave the garage doors open and point the exhaust out of the garage - but we'll look into a new location based on another comment on this video. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hello Mark - Our local electric company provides the cord, sized based on your generator size, the amount of amps/watts/volts you will be using, and the distance/length the cord needs to be from the generator to the GenerLink. If we had a generator that was big enough to power the whole house, they would have provided a heavier cord with the system. Great point - thanks for watching!
Great system, nice setup. But we get ripped off in Canada. Most/all charge $2,000+ just for the kit and so-called "installation" which is to connect one white wire! The Generlink can be purchased for about $1200 so they charge an extra $1000 just to stand there while the Hydro guy unplugs the meter and the contractor plugs in the Generlink and connect ONE WIRE!. I am in eastern Ontario Canada, and I just purchased a Generlink meter with a 20 foot 40A extension which will connect to my 50A input of my Firman generator, and I paid $1400 for the Generlink, which includes installation, which doesn't take long to do. You got ripped off.
this is a bad idea .. do not give any electricity company any leverage when using you own generator ... just do the transfer yourself on the box ... this makes you, the homeowner, in charge ...
I can see how that could be a concern. But the nice thing about the GenerLink system we have is that it's not actually controlled by the electric company. It's just ensuring that we don't back-feed the system, which protects the lineman.
My thoughts exactly. Even if they don't control it, that's letting them get too close for comfort. So it senses when your generator kicks on and shuts off the power from the pole? They can already suspend and recoup ect your service with these smart meters, what's to stop them from keeping record of how long you DON'T use their power. That's still potentially giving them too much power.
