well, I'm european and I certainly have the money to buy a Mac (or two), but why should I I don't see any logic or reason in paying 200% more than it actually costs to produce their stuff Apple is one of the few companies/brands, that have such an arrogant attitude about pricing because they think they're all that and a must for all cool trendy hipster I also like to play games and build and configure my own system from the companies I want
@TheZwirek I remember a couple years ago when there was a Mac edition of the EVGA GTX 285 for $100 more than the regular version. Same exact specs. Made me happy inside.
@alecness Fair enough, the track pad issue still stands. That is my reasoning for not buying a windows notebook. Also, I was brand fixated with apple back then 2 years ago. I am not anymore since they keep advertising their products as incredibly innovative, when they are actually minorly improved (or in some cases not) copies of pre-existing products.
@daemon1129 That's how most people buy most things you know. They have a good experience with something else that company makes and then get something else they make and hope it's as nice an experience, which for many, it is. This isn't unique to Apple, they just happen to have a fairly tight product line up of very well designed (not just how they look, but how they function too) products that seamlessly integrate with one another. Less choice makes it more likely you choose something too.
@PerverseBannana Apart from not being able to install OSX on whatever you like, it's actually far less locked down than Windows is. You can change pretty much any aspect of the entire system if you know Terminal commands. You need third party tools to change things at that kind of level in Windows. They're both proprietary, but OSX less so believe it or not. A lot of it is built on open source software and open standards which is how it plays nicely with other OS's in many networks for example.
@bgioni That wage does put things into perspective. In that case, I'd recommend a PC definitely. I think if you are willing to put up with reading a few manuals/help guides, then Linux is the way to go. Windows has always given me issues back when I used it, but I hear W7 is really good. I wouldn't know. BTW, I didn't know that there were modded W7 versions to run on older hardware. That's interesting stuff. Thanks!
Actually I used them for 5 years through college and University and i stand by my original post (all be it a year old). I gave them a chance and the only thing they managed to do was disappoint me (and lose my work due to crashing all the time), even as a Graphic Designer i have no desire or use for a Mac, the tools and programs i have available on my current system far surpasses what i used from a "top of the line" Apple product. In short I stand by my original post.
@olivenoire1 No, that's not right. I'm not talking about buying a bunch of computers in a network; I'm talking about buying a single Lenovo ThinkPad, or HP EliteBook, or Dell Precision for personal use. Much like Macs, they are very expensive. In return, however, you get a far better built machine with unmatched reliability which will last until you don't need it anymore. They also rarely have major design flaws, like the overheating in recent MBPs.
Well you might want one for professional editing software.Though, yes, those reasons you listed are valid for most consumers. Also, I don't own a mac and don't intend on owning a mac, just saying that my aforementioned reason is also valid.
One of my professors told me that simple applications makes these applications less Functional. If you know what I mean. In the case of apple, they are actually making things a lot simpler, so that means their product applications is only good for the unemployed. And that's a fact.
@alecness I will excuse your rudeness since I used to have that opinion myself. I can safely say that a multi-touch trackpad is superior to any mouse, and I cannot do without it anymore. I only use a mouse when gaming now (on my windows partition). The trackpad is responsive and multi-touch commands are very convenient. Secondly, the portability of my macbook is great - it would be awful having to carry around a massive clunky windows laptop to college in my bag.
you do have a point. My dad was forced to buy one because in college some of the programs he had to use are for OSX ONLY! And I hate Apple for that. Paying companies to make software exclusive for their OS just so people are forced to buy their system. *Sigh* I guess that's what Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft do with consoles too...
PCs and Macs are somewhat the same level here in Hong Kong. However it's quite bizarre to connect intelligence to technical preference. I've a pc for desktop (not off-the shelf for obvious reasons) and a mac for school.
@bgioni Also, specs matter even less when you consider that the OS has been made by Apple and is optimised for their h/w. I don't have the link anymore, but iPad graphics tested faster than Android tablets with faster GPUs.
And sadly my dad doesn't have the patience to use Ubuntu again. He only tried it out in the 90's and I don't think he has much patience to work with it. I might have it someday though...
@TutTutOpenSesame Most media courses in college use Macs, and you can install Windows on the same machine and have the best of both worlds. Remember, a lot of people install it on their Mac not because they love it, but because they use software that only runs on that OS. Plus, Macs are just nicer to use for those kind of things. The UI is more consistent and intuitive and aids in productivity more than Windows does. I get things done faster on Macs than Windows. Same tasks, same software.
@bgioni That was just an example, not the point. I just think people should judge for themselves after buying the computer. I have used Windows, as well as OS X and a few Linux distros in my time. I highly recommend OS X to almost anyone. A lot of people ignore OS X, since it's quite expensive to buy the h/w. I just think the high customer satisfaction and support ratings mean something. They are there for a reason. Especially customer satsifaction. Anyway, I say experiment.
@LeoNatan25: No, you don't need to recompile the kernel to install a driver. Just load a kernel module. Apple and its oppressive iPhone development process is just one example of a giant corporation which has the final say over the softwate people can run on their phones. Of course the Linux kernel itself doesn't adhere to the UNIX philosophy of modularity and clean interfaces so much, because getting it right is VERY hard. XNU tried the microkernel approach but failed spectacularly.
I have a Macbook pro (1), running Mac OS X AND Windows (2), I am NOT Asain (3), I am NOT stupid (4), I am NOT AMERICAN! (5) and I bought the Macbook because I know they are expensive, but I bought it for the quality, and because they last longer than PC's (i.e. laptops).
@Ikus13 I don't know. I honestly don't see how Apple offers higher quality products. But then again, I know how to use computers so I might have an advantage in this respect.
@C3ment I love this comment so much. It seems this fella enjoys looking at his laptop more than using it cause its so thin and attractive a design. You know what is superior to any track pad by any manufacturer? A mouse. I will even use the tiny terrible quality travel mice over a trackpad any day.
@Seferot228 It's harder to use properly, plus Microsoft have damn good marketers so they keep their share, Linux is a bit harder to use as well, plus you can't play games on it. Some software doesn't run on linux as well, but theres some damn amazing open source freeware plus to get the best out of a linux you should be decent with computers because it has a bit of configuration to it.
I rage inside at all these soon to be college students saying, "I need a MAC laptop for school!" i'm sorry, but unless your major is some type of art or communications/media, YOU DON'T! In fact, even if you are going into some type of visual arts major, you might be better off with a PC depending on what area of art you're going into. When I did my pre-college program at School of Visual Arts, all of the computers in the computer animation labs were PCs.
John Dvorak says, in effect, Mac users are too stupid to use windows machines. He also said in the eighties in the general direction of Apple (true fact here, ladies and gentlemen): "There is no proof users want or would accept a pointing device called a mouse." (quoted from memory) Thank you, John. I said, thank you, John. You can sit down now.
@bgioni I wasn't insinuating you as a chapass, sorry if it seemed that way and that offended you. Also, I don't think you can get the same specs for $200-$250. A lot of times PC manufacturers'll cut corners. E.g. they'll say the computer comes with 8GB RAM, but it'll come with low-speed or DDR2 or something.
@PerverseBannana The only reason most of the games coming out on PC even make it to the PC these days is because XBOX uses the same DX API's, so it's more trivial to port it to Windows. Microsoft were smart when they made XBOX run DX too. If it used something else then I'd be shocked to see even half the number of PC titles we get today being released (I mean cross platform releases).
You couldn't even put together a decent simile to make your point. So my mother has iToys. An iPad, iPhone, and iPod. But she knows they are toys. She has three windows laptops and a PC, the PC and one laptop being what she uses to make enough money to afford so many gadgets. While Macs may be more simplified, when it comes to getting anything done, work related or otherwise, a Pc is a far more versatile, affordable platform.
The greatest advantages of GNU/Linux are -that it gives you the freedom to (legally) understand, improve and share software. Your destiny is in your hands, not the hands of giant corporations. -the UNIX philosophy, which boils down to: computers are tools for making our lives easier - so the operating system should not stand in the way of automating tasks, combining software written by other people, or doing things previously unimagined. If you don't care for these, Linux may not be for you.
@C3ment The track pad/mouse argument is really just preferential so I'm going to drop that one. But calling a windows laptop "clunky" and massive is rather dumb. HP makes a comparable laptop, specs wise to a 15 inch macbook pro that its one quarter of an inch thicker and weighs less than one fifth of a pound heavier than the same macbook. Similar models by other manufacturers can be found too. Not really a big difference unless your have a small bag.
Windows 7 only needed one week to overtake MacOS (all of them) in europe 1 week Windows 7 vs. 20 years Apple Mac OS Unfortunately you can't post links here at youtube
This is funny actually. In an old anime movie (1998 is old enough), a woman that knows absolute dick about computers gets her friend to buy her a Mac IN THE MOVIE. She couldn't do as much as get to the internet browser without help. I think there's a connection here.
@mrsoouter Newsflash. 90%+ of computer users aren't all that intelligent when it comes to computers. Not everyone is a geek who can tell you how many bits are in a byte, or even what they are. If you're whole reason for dismissing an entire platform is based entirely on games, you need to sort your life priorities out because there's more to life than playing games. Hell, even companies like Rooster Teeth who make the lions share of their income from game related stuff run entirely on Macs.
People outside the USA already know how crap mac's are even apples adverts target the less intelligent users of computers and also taking into account on a windows pc u can do MORE things than what u can do on a mac including playing brand new games on max settings!
@barrybob32 not truefax. i've seen atleast 3 asians at starbucks when i go there with my mac. 1 of them had a mac, 1 of them had linux and the other one was running CM-DoS.
As a developer who uses Windows, MacOSX, and Linux, I'm amazed this stupid debate continues with the same framing. EVERYONE uses Macintosh these days, even Ubuntu is Macintosh. If anything, Windows is the LCD of operating systems, is the easiest to use and hides the most from the user. MacOSX doesn't have a usability advantage over Windows anymore, except for the multitouch trackpad on the MacBook. That makes other point and click paradigms seem cretinously obsolete.
@mrsoouter I never said computers were intelligent, I said most people using them aren't all that educated on their use. To most people they're a tool, nothing else, just like a toaster or a microwave, or even a car. They're a means to an end for some thing or another. Why should people settle for something more complex to use when there's better alternatives available? Also, you should look at the way Microsoft sold Windows in the 90's, that'll explain why it's so dominant. Nasty is one word.
@MaoiMeowi2 heh! Self-depreciating humour! I like it! For what it's worth, I don't think that's true. On the other hand, I think the majority of the more vocal segments that seems to shout the loudest are usually the ones that fall below the national average IQ...which I have to admit is impressive to even get to that score! :]
That wouldn't be a problem now. Linux have now an application that is slowly growing that allow the installation of Mac applications inside Linux like Wine run Windows applications. So all your dad had to do was download and install Ubuntu for example, install the program Darling and with Darling install any Mac application that he needed. Sadly that Linux application is still a little far from over.
When I was in high school, my family had several Dell computers. I got a new one in 2006, and by 2007 it was slow and useless as hell. It went through tons of anti-virus installs and defrags and total wipes of the drive on several occasions, but still had a very short lifespan. At first they run well, but given a few months they turn to shit. I bought an imac in 2007, and I'm still using it now. I think it cost somewhere around $1200, very basic model. At one point the superdrive broke, and the apple store replaced it for free under applecare. At one point the internal HD went bad, and I replaced it without much effort. Meh. Complain all you want about their fanboys and shitty marketing, but got damn they seem to have an incredible lifespan. 7 years of frequent use and it still performs pretty well. It will probably be another 5 until it dies or becomes obsolete. Considering my experience with windows, there is no comparison.
I was using PCs for a decade and now I can fix anything and everything. But I'm just got tired using PCs, just got tired fixing things I could NOT be fixing if Microsoft would care about the end user just a little bit more. Just got tired. I was hoping that things will change for a loooong time, but they didn't. Now I'm a Mac and I'm NOT going back - life's too short to waste it on fixing somebody's poor design.
@CopyrightPropaganda No. No it isn't. A single CPU in a Mac Pro costs more than your entire rig. You're also missing the point of such machines. They're workstations, not desktops. Their purpose is to never be turned off and to have higher scalability and reliability than desktop machines. You can argue your machine can do the same things, and sure it can, but it won't be as stable, and if you did what the Mac Pro is actually MADE for with your machine, it'd crash from piled up errors.
@PerverseBannana because unix based things dont really do as much as windows does games are finally coming to mac through steam, but before that windows was pretty much the only os for anyone who is big into their gaming and i still stick with windows for my gaming, because OSX wont run on my custom built rig, not to mention the majority of games STILL dont run on mac and as for linux...... no gamesw work on linux... and if you say quake, then ill have to slap you!
lol, and instantly he makes his email public to hang him out there :) but he was basically just saying what many think. macs are for people without fingers on their hands. just the palm click : ) although I'm not sure the reason for the sales difference is that clear cut.
@harvesterofsorrow111 Quite honestly I don't think I've ever used/seen a Linux computer, I know the exist but what's different about them? I'm posting this only because I want to be more knowledgeable about the Linux platform.
actually i am a multimedia designer and freelance illustrator, point of the matter is we just have different preferred platforms for varied reasons, sorry in all to cause you offense, later :)@rubenandpimslapping
@s3nr1 Not really. At the core it's Darwin... Not one bit of OS X is Linux... if anything it's closer to FreeBSD because they use parts of the FreeBSD userland, but the Kernel is XNU, which is this hacked together version of Mach and BSD 4.4 lite so... yeah. No Linux at all, really.
@LeoNatan25 Seriously.. this isn't the 90s dude. No one needs to recompile a kernel to add drivers to it anymore. I haven't compiled a kernel since my Slackware 2 days.
@DaGleese UNIX doesn't do as much as Windows? Are you serious? UNIX essentially runs the world in some form or another, and even Windows Vista and 7 (and now 8) share a lot of UNIX like features when it comes to permission handling and so on. It has nothing to do with the capabilities of the platforms, it's the market share. Windows has more games because more people use it, simple as. Macs are getting more because more people are starting to use it, and with more capable hardware (% wise)
100% true
@ObsoleteAcey Good for you. Perhaps for simple tasks, but I had to do it recently in order to install something simple as the VMWare Tools.
well, I'm european and I certainly have the money to buy a Mac (or two), but why should I
I don't see any logic or reason in paying 200% more than it actually costs to produce their stuff
Apple is one of the few companies/brands, that have such an arrogant attitude about pricing because they think they're all that and a must for all cool trendy hipster
I also like to play games and build and configure my own system from the companies I want
@TheZwirek
I remember a couple years ago when there was a Mac edition of the EVGA GTX 285 for $100 more than the regular version. Same exact specs. Made me happy inside.
There's an elegance to running functions out of cmd line.
Mac OS is clearly one of the most uncustomizable software in the market today!
@daemon1129 That's how most people buy most things you know. They have a good experience with something else that company makes and then get something else they make and hope it's as nice an experience, which for many, it is.
Thanks!

@olivenoire1 No, that's not right. I own a mac tiny
Its basically a Soda can with a half bitten apple on top and I only had to pay 4 dollars at the Super Market.
Versatility. 'Nuff said.
0:56 Check, and Mate.
it's because Apple products cost 1.5x more outside the US, even for older generation models. latest models are sometimes 3x more outside the US.
@popomartin2 Hahaha no worries! ;)
@alecness I will excuse your rudeness since I used to have that opinion myself. I can safely say that a multi-touch trackpad is superior to any mouse, and I cannot do without it anymore. Why should people settle for something more complex to use when there's better alternatives available? Also, you should look at the way Microsoft sold Windows in the 90's, that'll explain why it's so dominant. Nasty is one word.
@MrBrutus101 You mean gray, sparkly paint?
Weird, you can just buy an HDD Solid for your PC and it can do wonders
@PerverseBannana because unix based things dont really do as much as windows does
games are finally coming to mac through steam, but before that windows was pretty much the only os for anyone who is big into their gaming
and i still stick with windows for my gaming, because OSX wont run on my custom built rig, not to mention the majority of games STILL dont run on mac
and as for linux...... no gamesw work on linux... and if you say quake, then ill have to slap you!
Everything in this video is 100% true.
lol, and instantly he makes his email public to hang him out there :)
but he was basically just saying what many think. macs are for people without fingers on their hands. just the palm click : )
although I'm not sure the reason for the sales difference is that clear cut.
Because the rest of the world is smart enough not to piss away 3k on an $800 laptop...
It's because their computers are shiny so people are attracted to them much like raccoons.
@cfulp how.... ?
@ck7EiS True, because of taxes, but Macs aren't made in the USA.
yeah, you're right, that list lacks one category of users, who are just stupid Mac users without any 'if'
its true
"MAC users are too stupid to use Windows". Period.
@LeoNatan25 Seriously.. this isn't the 90s dude. No one needs to recompile a kernel to add drivers to it anymore. I haven't compiled a kernel since my Slackware 2 days.
I'm a Mac user. I use a Mac because Windows was too stupid.
Macs are getting more because more people are starting to use it, and with more capable hardware (% wise)
i have a mac and use dvorak........
Mac runs on unix. Windows runs on windows. Windows is not a development machine.
