Absolutely the most deep and insightful song I have ever heard. No one likes confronting these questions and these realities that we are a subject of, but this song does. "Though today may be a day of smiles, tomorrow's still in doubt, and what brings me joy may bring you care and woe. We're born to die, but don't know why, or what it's all about; and the more we try to learn, the less we know." THAT....that is good songwriting. Why can't we have more songs like this nowadays? Ones that talk about things that actually matter, instead of all the materialistic and superficial nonsense modern songs focus on...
Songs from this era are usually light and upbeat. This one breaks the mold in the best way. I keep coming back to it. Captures the human condition in an endearing way.
Very true...I became obsessed with the show when random Arnold Rothstein clips popped up in my RUclips suggestions while on one of my international work trips....which was followed up by killing off 5 seasons on Amazon Prime in 2 weeks back at home.... I see a bit of myself in every character especially as "my own boss" being an entrepreneur now... Eli Thompson = Opportunistic & extremely corrupt when the urgency of his situation calls for it.... Mickey Doyle = My complacent & yet goofy & charming side Chalky = Fighter with a chip on his shoulder in me.... Arnold = Savvy in tilting many relationships in my favor.... Luciano/Lansky = Their patience in grinding it out on the DL...while simultaneously faking it till they "make it..." I thought The Sopranos was in a league of its own until the 6th season became "pretentious filler." While Boardwalk had it's filler issues in Season 1...the series as a whole despite it's rushed Season 5 due to HBO's demands resonates moreso with the journeys in my life....
"Hurried and worried until we're buried, and there's no curtain call... Life's a very funny proposition after all." Damn you Eddie Cantor, I felt that.
Did you ever sit and ponder? Sit and wonder? Sit and think? Why we're here and what this life is all about? It's a problem that has driven many brainy men to drink It's the weirdest thing they've tried to figure out About a thousand different theories, all the scientists can show But never yet have proved a reason why With all we thought, and all we're taught, but all we seem to know: Is we're born, we live a while, and then we die. Life's is a very funny proposition, after all Imagination, jealousy, hypocrisy, and all Three meals a day, a whole lot to say, When you haven't got the coin You're always in the way Everybody's fighting, As we wend our way along Every fellow claims the other fellow's in the wrong Hurried and worried until we're buried and there's no curtain call Life's a very funny proposition after all When all things are coming easy And when luck is with a man, Why, then life to him is sunshine everywhere Then, the fates blow rather breezy And quite upset a plan Then he'll cry that life's a burden hard to bear Though today may be a day of smiles, Tomorrow's still in doubt And what brings me joy may bring you care and woe We're born to die, but don't know why, or what it's all about And the more we try to learn, the less we know Life's a very funny proposition, you can bet And no one's ever solved the problem properly, as yet Young for a day, then old and gray, Like the rose that buds and blooms And fades and falls away Losing health to gain our wealth, As through this dream we tour Everything's a guess And nothing's absolutely sure Battles exciting and fates we're fighting until the curtain falls Life's a very funny proposition after all
I actually wish music like this could come back into fashion, as well as the clothing from them days...and this songs lyrics are very true and meaningful
This music precedes Gatsby’s era by roughly 21 years. George M. Cohan wrote it in 1904, Gatsby was 1925. That’s a long damn time in music trends, and if people are playing this at a Gatsby party they ought to know that this song was long since considered old hat by that time.
So much great music from the early 20th century thats been forgotten until Boardwalk Empire revived it. I love the new recordings cos it doesnt have the crackles or grainyness of the gramaphone originals, but I love hearing those same originals too cos Billy Murray etc were great artists in their own right to deserve to be remembered.
I feel like it could help with crises like that tho, because it’s basically saying “nobody really knows wtf life is, it’s stupid so just make the most of it”. To me at least
His voice reminds me a wee bit of Marc Almond. Surprised they didnt get him to do a few tunes for this show, his style would have fitted in great back in the 1920's.

Written by George M. Cohan in 1904. One of the most famous Irish-American songwriters who’s ever lived.
i like confronting these questions. what other questions are worth confronting?

Boardwalk Empire is not a story about prohibition, It's a story about Life in General
that's right

God, that's a great song...
"Hurried and worried until we're buried,
and there's no curtain call...
Life's a very funny proposition after all."
Damn you Eddie Cantor, I felt that.
When you haven't got the coin you're always in the way
If i can't have this played at my funeral, then I'm not dying 😂
Did you ever sit and ponder?
Sit and wonder?
Sit and think?
Why we're here and what this life is all about?
It's a problem that has driven many brainy men to drink
It's the weirdest thing they've tried to figure out
About a thousand different theories, all the scientists can show
But never yet have proved a reason why
With all we thought, and all we're taught, but all we seem to know:
Is we're born, we live a while, and then we die.
Life's is a very funny proposition, after all
Imagination, jealousy, hypocrisy, and all
Three meals a day, a whole lot to say,
When you haven't got the coin
You're always in the way
Everybody's fighting,
As we wend our way along
Every fellow claims the other fellow's in the wrong
Hurried and worried until we're buried and there's no curtain call
Life's a very funny proposition after all
When all things are coming easy
And when luck is with a man,
Why, then life to him is sunshine everywhere
Then, the fates blow rather breezy
And quite upset a plan
Then he'll cry that life's a burden hard to bear
Though today may be a day of smiles,
Tomorrow's still in doubt
And what brings me joy may bring you care and woe
We're born to die, but don't know why, or what it's all about
And the more we try to learn, the less we know
Life's a very funny proposition, you can bet
And no one's ever solved the problem properly, as yet
Young for a day, then old and gray,
Like the rose that buds and blooms
And fades and falls away
Losing health to gain our wealth,
As through this dream we tour
Everything's a guess
And nothing's absolutely sure
Battles exciting and fates we're fighting until the curtain falls
Life's a very funny proposition after all
Song written by George M. Cohan. He's the only actor to ever have a statue on Broadway. There's a guy to really research and learn about.
Love George M Cohan. No one remembers him, it seems.
Except for the Pogues. They reference him more than a few times, usually alongside Brendan Behan. “Dear old Times Square’s favorite bard”
As someone that is outside of the theater circuit / show fanbase, thank you for giving direct credit. Such a gorgeous song ❤❤
I actually wish music like this could come back into fashion, as well as the clothing from them days...and this songs lyrics are very true and meaningful
+The Tribute Master You're totally right. I hate those stupid ironic t-shirts and dubstep songs
That will be positively awesome.
aGREE WITH YOU 100%
Great Gatsby parties tend to be quite popular

This was George M. Cohan.
Listening to the soundtrack again in 2020. Shows nearly a decade old and I keep going back to it.
Yeh it's incredible. It's still one of the best tv series ever made. It was all so incredibly well done. I keep rewatching it
I agree. This can still be the next "Roaring 20's". Just off to a bumpy start.
One of the best TV series of the century
I love this song makes you think about life in a serious way hug the person you love
a wonderful conclusion for the 1st Episode
I would hope that this would be played at my wake and funeral.
Nothing has changed . . . for the better. NOTHING ! !
Best song that I had heard so far that pretty much sum up "Existential Crisis ". Anthem to those who suffer from it
I feel like it could help with crises like that tho, because it’s basically saying “nobody really knows wtf life is, it’s stupid so just make the most of it”. To me at least
When i first watched this series world was falling apart, now we are living in hell and this feels like light in the tunnel
absolutely beautiful!
I love the Boardwalk Empire soundtrack........
Good times.
I miss Nucky
The band backing up Stephen DeRosa is Vince Giordano's Nighthawks
Vince Giordano has an an impressive ability to take old cultural artifacts into The Present Moment and to imbue them with Great Meaning. Excelsior!
11-06-24. Politics was yesterday. Today's a day of smiles.
Feels Fallout 3 like
Poetry... almost! And true...
Very good!
This is a good song with the serie of scenes of the end of the First Season
Timeless lyrics.
So True
His voice reminds me a wee bit of Marc Almond. Surprised they didnt get him to do a few tunes for this show, his style would have fitted in great back in the 1920's.
Stewie Griffin has such a velvety voice.
sorry dude. I feel a bit stupid now. My apologies. It is a great song. And I have no idea why someone would dislike it.
Why is this song, this version, not on Spotify? Love this version and need to go to RUclips to listen?
Clearly spotify sucks.
Real.
gyp rosetti is @ least the best new character of any series, 2012
i love that man, dog collar or not!
Yeah but this is better then Mr Cellophane
How someone can dislike this ?
Simpletons who've never thought about life and would rather listen to WAP.
omg.. doesn't anyone master volumes properly anymore
Must have been Gyp Rosetti xd
Nothing's funny to Gyp. 'specially life. Well, 'cept rogue waves. He finds those kinda funny.
What's life if it ain't personal.
Gyp is evil personified, but at least he never took anything personally.
I mean, he’s right. Life is personal. If everything’s just business then you’re probably a worse monster than Rossetti could possibly be.
awesome song. mr cellophane from chicago is similar to this.
No prob ;)
Your grammar. That's why.
My secondary language, that's why.
