Hey Joey, I hope you're well. I'm on the board of directors for a non-profit which repairs, refurbishes and recycles electronics. We have some old iPhones and parts spare. I believe there are a couple of 6's, possibly an iPhone 8, some screens and so on. We don't have time to refurbish them. If they would be useful to you, you can have them free of charge. Please let me know!
25:51 try testing the proximity sensor (off loudspeaker) and cover top of the phone to see if the screen goes off (mimicking putting phone to your ear). If it doesnt go off, front cam flex assembly needs replacing
Been watching Joey since ep 40 and have been taking notes, I work as an appliance tech and was never able to truly able to isolate electrical issues very well, just yesterday I was able to save my customer almost 400$ with a relay diagnosed to have a bad short to ground on the main control, fixed and unit tested good. Thank you joey. You teach us a lot and it's encouraged me to really dig deep and help the community to keep things running.
23:13 When you're doing iphone repairs you ALWAYS unplug the battery first then the screen and visa versa. If you don't unplug the battery first before plugging the screen in it can short the screen and you'll end up buying a new screen. I repair and sell phones so I've done this by accident so many times lol
I found your channel the other day and binge watched your Profit or Loss series from like episode 60 to this one in that time. I'm now obsessed! I don't know the first thing about repairing electronics, and yet your personality and beginner friendly content is so entertaining to watch!! Keep it up man!
the iPhone 8 probably means there's an issue with the main speaker for calls so have to use loud speaker for calls, most of the time its just a clean of the call speaker/grill and it gets it back to good health
The blacked out sim thing is because old phones did not have e-sim (meaning without a physical sim inside you will not be able to access it, hence blacked out)
Yay, the iPhones! Great stuff. As the one that fixes iphones as a hobby I would recommend to ignore pull tabs beneath the battery on the older models as those tabs are too dry for intended way because of time, instead just flood it with IPA and pry (be careful not to use internal parts to pivot prying tool). For the easier removal of the screen: use suction cup, even the simplest one would do, but it has to have some kind of a ring attached so you can pull. Just put it at charging port area and pull until you see a slight gap that can be used to insert plastic pry tool (a guitar pick or slim plastic card would do). If it has a water-dust protection seal you can use heat of course but sometimes just a flood of good old ipa on the edges would work too. Putting a new seal would be a great idea as lots of dust that could get inside of it and the seal would kinda protect from water when it's raining outside and you pick your phone to check time or something.
Joey you should look into getting thin plastic cards for battery removal, it’s easier to slide them under the battery and cut through the glue rather than using a spudger which is a bit more stabby than slicy.
Test iPhone 8 to make sure the proximity sensor is still good, make a phone call and cover the proximity sensor with your hand, the screen should be turned off but if the screen doesn't turn off it means the proximity sensor is broken
Been enjoying your videos for a long time now. Very inspiring! Congrats on 100 episodes! Newer iPhones support what are called eSIMs. Allows you to connect to a different network without the use of a physical SIM. Great for traveling to different countries or getting month-to-month services without a contract. That would be why one phone didn't have the menu grayed out while the other did.
As someone, who repaired a good chunk of this older Iphones, the best way to pull this tabs, is by removing taptic engine right under the battery. It would give you much needed space to get a good grip on this tabs. Also new tabs if bought somewhere like aliexpress, are much worse, it harden with time and battery become loose inside the case, so just use good double sided tape instead. Cheers
Check the iPhone 8 and make sure you can hear the call without using the loudspeaker. I've seen a few iPhone 8s that you can't hear out of the regular speaker on calls so you have to use the loudspeaker to talk on the phone. Great video, hope this helps!
The screen glue is important for long term repair. it also gives an element of shock protection/splash proofing. Many use different products and adhesives . From factory they are pressed or vacuum sealed usually. I'm currently experimenting a product I believe is perfect but only a short way into testing .
Great episode Joey, what a way to celebrate a big milestone with 100 episodes. I think we’d all love to see you work on more Apple devices to mix things up occasionally. Congrats on a decent winner profit for this one and I can’t wait to see where you go next whether it’s continuing with episode 101 or starting a fresh with Season 2 ✌🏼
Hey mate just wanted to say thanks for the show. I started watching your channel a few months ago and I've been enjoying them very much. Thanks from portland oregon usa.
Hey Joey, I definitely enjoyed seeing you work on iPhones this episode! It was a nice change and variety from game consoles. It'd be nice to see you keep working on them in the future, maybe start looking to buy some broken ones on eBay like you do consoles, and add them to the rotation of stuff you work on in your videos. I'd really like to see you work on some that need board-level work like you do on other things, as that's the most interesting content in my opinion. All the best, and good luck with the profit!
For battery removal on the iPhone 7, remove the haptic engine first. That gives better access to the pull tabs, and a straighter angle for the pull resulting in less chance of them breaking. It's just two screws and the module's electrical connections are sprung pogo pins.
hey Joey. love your channel. i want to get into repairing tech like you, so i was wondering if you know the best way to get good at finding out whats wrong with a device.
"Ribbon cable of death"! You never fail to make me laugh. If people aren't Subscribing, because you mainly fix consoles, it's Their Loss. Great Repairs and Video Jester Joey! Thank You.
The screen adhesive does serve as a water seal and also gives the display a bond to the chassis, which I believe helps to prevent cracking of the display from flex.
Yes finally fixing something different.. thank you for listening to the viewers havent watched it yet but hopefully you can profit off a few of the phones always good to switch it up a bit. Cheers
The 100th episode! Crazy.. and working on iPhones since a very long time. Great video. Thank you and Happy Anniversary to your 100th profit or loss episode!
screws came frim the side of the display , there is a metal heat shield on the back of the display also its important to replace adhesive around the display otherwise dirt and humidity enters phone and usually blurs the front and back cameras make sure to use IPA and cotton swabs to thoroughly clean any residue from an old glue good luck you are doing great for an iphone rookie
Always enjoy the content and I'd really like to see more of the retro consoles repaired but I realise there isn't much profit in that. Keep up the good work Joey. 👍
Hi Joey, loving the videos! To be honest you've done a decent job fixing the iPhones considering you don't normally fix them, i repair phones (iphones, samsung etc) laptops, games consoles, tablets etc as a job if you ever need help with anything you haven't done before. the iphone with the proximity sensor issue, that's just when the screen dims when you put it next to your face on a call The issue you had with the mobile data being greyed out is because newer iphones have e-sims whereas the older iphones don't so it wont be available without a sim inserted.
Hi Joey, thanks for the great vid. For the screen adhesive, I use b-7010 tape. I repair more iPads that iPhones, but it works well, especially if you use it with Tape Primer.
Joooooooeeeeeyyy!!!! Welcome to my world. Better late than never. Seen that apple have discontinued updates for phones up until iPhone X the value of them phones aren’t good but a good place to practice. Try the Xr as it’s still a single board layer and still fetches a decent price when selling. If you need any help with repairs give us a shout bro
Phone repair tech here. The seal around the phones is for water resistance and to help with adhearing the screen to the frame. As long as it has about 80% of the seal would be ok but wouldnt have any water resistance. Replace if you have new seal but will be fine as long as you have most of it.
When you get to 1000 will you use it for an ultrasonic cleaner? You could just thrown in the ribbon cable and you might have a working cable after that so in time you will make your money back. I'm in love with mine.
Nice idea, Joey, to fix iPhones :) However, you also need a "tristar chip" tester in case of charging flex/tristar chip issues. And keep in mind that older iPhone screens (the first one is iPhone 7 that is glued)are not glued to the phone chassis. 6S/SE 2016 is still somewhat usable today, but anything below that became collectible. And as for the battery tab, you can heat the backside of the iPhone with a maximum of 100°C to soften the adhesive, or you can use some IPA around the battery to loosen it, as well. I use MG-B7000 LCD glue instead of device-specific adhesive strips.
This is great content. I wish i had your carisma to do what you do! I've fixed countless phones and tablets and find your videos very entertaining, i feel compelled to help you out. 22:38 you use tapes to just help the screen stick back to the frame. Once an iphone has been opened (as your finding out pretty much all older ones have) theres no hope of them being resealed to water resistant levels. Samsungs require a press to reseal them and i assume Apple process will also require a similar jig tool to restore water resistance.
Finally bro you did it 🎉❤ im a mobile repair technician and i can do a lot of help for you and try to stick to iphones because they tend to sell well and the repair (your hand job on fixing them ) is kinda high so if you fix them yourself you will always be profitable try buying lot's of different iphones that will make a good video always ❤ best wishes
The sim holder is easy, it drops on with hot air like anything else. The small, thin boards from apple take heat quickly. Just be careful not to overheat due to plastic in the sim reader and the under filled NAND on the other side, behind it.

proximity sensor senses when your on a call and put your phone to your ear it shuts screen off. check that. also check the face id in setttings to make sure it reconizes a face. thats 2 base ideas for proximity sensor issues.
Hey Joey love your videos, on fixing the iPhones why not salvage working part's from the phones you can't make profit and build up one that needs a simple replacement and make profit without having to spend more on fixing it, I used to do that on Nokia phones 👌
Had to look into it and according to ChatGPT the spring mechanism does more than just provide physical support for the push-push locking mechanism. It ensures that the SIM card is held securely in place against the electrical contacts, allowing the phone to both read data from the SIM and detect its presence. The soldering of this mechanism to the logic board ensures that both the physical and electrical connections are maintained for proper SIM card detection and operation. Nine times out of ten a ‘greyed out ‘ option on Apple devices of that generation means a board fault. You solved it with the pin bending and added solder to a broken connection . Generally speaking in older iPhones a greyed out setting is a board issue.
By the looks of it, it appears that the SIM slot was not fully inserted. Also, once the card is inserted, the contact at the back should disconnect. Love watching these :) Edit: OK, should have watched till the end before commenting :D
If I was replacing my own battery, I wouldn't put so much of the adhesive pad on the back, to make it easier to remove in the future. I have used dental floss in the past to separate items from adhesive pads.
Glue on the screen was only used after iPhone X I believe, on the 8 the proximity sensor is when you do a call when the phone is on your ear it turns the screen off
Its the origional battery, just the adhesive has been taken off, not put back on, when the adhesive is taken off, a lot of the time the batterys on the back can become crumpled up
The iphone 8 will have an issue when its not on loudspeaker, usually people cant hear you unless on loudspeaker/proximity wont register your face. Only way to have phone calls in that way is via the loudspeaker or airpods/headphones
"Perfect pull" ... remove the taptic engine and pull tab in a nice straight line and yes the adhesive around the frame for the screen not only adheres the screen to the frame but so helps prevent water/dust from getting into the device and finally the proximity sensor is what makes the screen shut off when you put the phone to your ear when making calls so that you don't touch anything on the screen... if you cover the top of the screen across where the camera is when on a call it should automatically turn the screen off and when you uncover it the screen should come back on
Why everyone is discussing phones here when the biggest event of episode was beardless Joe! iPhones were a nice touch, something fresh in the series ,but "shaved surprise" was bigger :D!

25:51 try testing the proximity sensor (off loudspeaker) and cover top of the phone to see if the screen goes off (mimicking putting phone to your ear). If it doesnt go off, front cam flex assembly needs replacing
The iphone 8, i think the "proximity sensor" might mean if put phone to your ear, the screen stays active.
Yea. It's near the top speaker/mic opening which is a common entry point for water. If it's not working, it most probably corroded away.
That and, making sure the mic works on loudspeaker. Can subscribe hear him while Joey is talking on loudspeaker
yeh and your cheek touches the speaker button and deafens you - i had same issue on old iphone

At least playing cards in a pinch. Anything but metal lol
@@gregthatcher919 yeah for sure. I find spudgers bend the battery rather than release the glue. Cards will slice the glue much better with IPA.
Test iPhone 8 to make sure the proximity sensor is still good, make a phone call and cover the proximity sensor with your hand, the screen should be turned off but if the screen doesn't turn off it means the proximity sensor is broken

Those screws you found in the red iPhone 7, is from the frame of the display. It is notorious on aftermarket screens that those screws come loose.

The sim holder is easy, it drops on with hot air like anything else. The small, thin boards from apple take heat quickly. Just be careful not to overheat due to plastic in the sim reader and the under filled NAND on the other side, behind it.
If you have a 3D printer, you could use the printbed to heat up the display. Most go up to 100C if not a little higher.
With older iOS, the mobile data section was greyed out when you didn’t have a simcard in it. So what you saw, was completely normal, apart from it not recognizing the simcard. You should have checked if it had modemfirmware in the settings and also the IMEI.

If you want the perfect battery tab pull, remove the haptic engine below the battery first.
Try seperating the glass from the lcd. It is good practise for further repairs
Joey on the SIM card reader you missed two solder joints at the top.
Good catch, although I think they only act as a support for the spring mechanism, but I could be wrong.
So You're right, Joey should resolder it or maybe even replace it with a brand new one.
on iphone 6s, 7, 8 and some other models the seal not only provents dust ingress but also allows for the haptic force touch to work correctly
Great vid as always ❤👍
Using IPA on the screen removes the oleophobic coating btw, it’s the coating that makes the screen feel smooth since it repels water
Nine times out of ten a ‘greyed out ‘ option on Apple devices of that generation means a board fault. You solved it with the pin bending and added solder to a broken connection . Generally speaking in older iPhones a greyed out setting is a board issue.

The Episode 100. But anyways, you are amazing Joey.
I'm jumping in before the episode begins, Good fuckin Luck, big man - I can't wait to see the results!
The iPhone 6 has no seal you can just pry it up no worries, I have fixed hundreds of them and they up until recently made excellent cheap flips
If I was replacing my own battery, I wouldn't put so much of the adhesive pad on the back, to make it easier to remove in the future. I have used dental floss in the past to separate items from adhesive pads.
Glue on the screen was only used after iPhone X I believe, on the 8 the proximity sensor is when you do a call when the phone is on your ear it turns the screen off
Where do you get thos adhesive pads that hold the screw from? Awesome work as always!!

there was a thing with the prox-sensor on the iPhone8, wasn't it? did you test, if the screen and touch will be off, if you hold it to your ear?
I bet the screws you found loose in the iphone are from the metal frame on the LCD.
About the pull tabs 19:50, i've seen jerry do it a couple times succesfully. No heat and very slowly. Grtz
Fingers crossed, kick some butt Joey!
34:17 Could it be the antenna?
I think the problem with that iPhone was..... it had a label covering the screen!! 🤣😂🤣😂
Joey
ALWAYS disconnect the battery FIRST and plug it back in LAST
