- Carl Thompson segment from Jason Momoa's "On The Road" featuring an interview with Les Claypool. I DO NOT OWN THIS VIDEO. I'm simply posting for my friend Carl to make it accessible to him, and to help Carl and Jason spread Carl's story.
I knew Jason was a bass nerd, but I never knew it was to this level, and how much he loves it. Very nice video
Jason Momoa and Les Claypool, what a badass pair of dudes.
Thank you for sharing this video Uncle Carl. We love and miss you. Coming from the Thompson family in Indiana. Sincerely Steve Thompson 🙏
He's from Indiana? Wow. Where at
@Brookzplayzmuzic He's not from Indiana. I am one of his nephews that lives in Indiana.
Hey Steve, I'm a friend of Carl and Linda, I see him regularly.. when you get a moment could you email me? Rhythmaddictrecords@gmail.com . Thanks
Wow, I was fortunate to hang with Carl in his shop in the basement in Brooklyn when I bought my doozie No Frills Scroll 4-String Bass, he's a hoot, what a great afternoon that was. Man, the conversations, wow ! with Les Claypool's walnut four string just sitting there being worked on. Surreal. Carl said he'd build me a bass if I could find him a solid Buick, no joke ! We discussed 'life' more than anything, which later I realized all plays a part in musical style. To this day, I just have to mention this part, sorry for being long winded, I had played that CT bass through a pre-Fender SWR amp, with a Telefunken tube (sometimes with an RCA black plate tube), and hands down to date there is no other bass that compares to it; just as true natural organic acoustic woody sounding like a real '50s upright bass this sounded like, locking in with my drummer on his true acoustic instrument (the wooden drum set), we both yelled, "Whoa..." when we heard the marriage of wooden acoustic instruments mend together.. Good times... :D
gotta watch this entire vid.
I'm a Bassist from Madison Wisconsin.
If your a musician, get out there and play.
you never know when your time is up on this journey.
PLAY PLAY PLAY.

"The best gift that anyone can have is to share their gift." I don't know if its just me getting more sentimental as I get older but that hit my hearts strings so hard. I was going to give this show a miss until watching this clip today. Thanks so much for sharing.
Truth.
Ok props to Jason Momoa. I had no idea he was a bass connoisseur.
His brother Robert Samosa plays bass in metallica
@@Brett-yq7pjlmao Robert Samosa 😂
@@shredward666 Samosa is Trujillo's real last name, he changed it.
@MeAndTheBoys_ Bullshit Roberto Agustín Miguel Santiago Samuel Trujillo Veracruz is his real name, and Jason Momoa is a only child he is not related to Robert Trujillo.
people say the craziest shit on the internet...lol@@ambrosgonzales
Primus is the reason I became a musician, first time I heard my name is mud my mind was blown! I owe everything to them, so of course I have heard of the Carl Thompson bass but really didn't know much about it until this video, thank you so much for sharing, such an amazing thing to document!
I love when Les was explaining why he chose the fretless, I always wondered why and now it totally makes sense, what a legend!
For me it was Flea but I can totally relate because Les and Carl are my idols.
It was definitely about time a video like this came out. Carl is an artist and an innovator. Bless!
For real, it brought tears to my eyes. Carl deserves this so much
Primus for life! Such beautiful guitars!
This is wonderful! After I heard there was Jason Momoa show where he interviewed Carl, I had to seek it out. There was a time in my life, a little over 20 years ago, where he gave me bass lessons in return for helping around the shop. They were a lot more than bass lessons, for sure, and it was a very special privilege to have had that experience. This really captures the feeling of being around Carl!
Carl Thompson basses are great. Love the way they play.
This is so beautiful. Thank you Jason 🙏❤️🥹
great video Carl IS THE BEST. biggest inspiration as builder myself. Truly a legend craftsman.
What an humble guy ...
The greatest are always behaving in a simple way ... no ego just beautiful .. gentle n grounded people ...
what a craftman ....
Whole new respect for JM. I Didn't know he played and idolizes Les like I do. Way to go Aqua man, very cool piece. Luv'd it, thanks for sharing.
Love this video. I just heard about this man recently with Les Claypool videos.
Thank Uncle Carl for sharing your gifts from One Artist To Another , I wish you good health and happiness. Much love, Johnny Thompson.
Amazing. Lucky to have known carl.
Amazing. Carl is a great human.
Dude this is so cool Carl definitely deserves all the respect in the world a true master in his craft and Jason bro I didn’t even know you played god I would do anything to have one of his masterpieces
Cheers, thank you for sharing ❤
This was Really Good. Thanks!
Can never get enough of this stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting this. What a wonderful, inspirational video.
Best wishes Gary
I love his thoughts. I feel the same about my leather working and jewelry making. Always looking forward to teaching someone else
I want a Carl Thompson because of Les Claypool, I’m learning bass because of Primus, this is an awesome video
Beautiful bass guitar. Love this story!!! ❤
woow !! very nice to see this, thank you sir!
Was very bummed out when I couldn't talk Carl into building me a bass, but I get it. I have a few remarkable Tune basses now that I adore
Is he retiring?
I gotta watch this movie or series whatever it is. This is pretty amazing
Carl and Les are legends!
So awesome!!
Carl helped me out with special strings back in the 70's. He is a gentleman's gentleman, and continues to this day to create musical art.
I have two CT guitars, and love them dearly. Great stuff!
So awesome. Great clip. Some years back, I was extremely fortunate and picked up a 4 string semi frills ct second hand. Such an incredible bass. Jason was wise to go fretless with the 4 string. I kind of would like mine to be. Ct Basses just feel like they’re meant to be fretless. Wish I could actually meet Carl and talk to him about it. He seems like such an incredible person. I’d love to see his shop and listen to any wisdom he has for building.
The whole show was pretty fucking awesome. Jason is an amazing person.
This young man inspired me to become a luthier! Every time I make a bass, I ask myself , how would Carl build this or how he would set the heel block. I humbly make a CT tribute bass that is not for sale, those are only samples for me and my son.
Thanks to everyone helping spread the CT story.
I got to check out 2 Carl Thompson basses at Roman Guitars in Vegas. One of them was a 6 string with a tremolo. Beautiful instruments.
I was always surprised that Les Claypool was the only famous player I ever really saw playing a Carl Thompson.
I've always loved Carl Thompson's basses.
Just an incredible Luthier and his person.
I saw James Taylor in concert at the Pantages theatre in Hollywood, and his entire back up band, the section, appeared to have stringed instruments all from this guy. they are distinctive. the section was supposed to be the best instrumental rock band in L.A.at the time, according to a hipster friend, and did play flawlessly well. A very long time ago.
From what little I know of island culture, Momoa seems to represent it honorably.
That´s INSANE!
that was really good
Shout out to Joey Kruse. The next Carl Thompson. Remember his name.
YES.......... yes yes yes yes yes yes yes..................yes
..."the best gift anybody can have is to share their gift......if you don't share it it's worthless... "
..........yes.....yes yes yes yes yes....
...........thank you....😊😊😊....yes.
Nice video
5:50 a few kids in my high school started playing bass (and listening to rush) after frizzle fry and suck on this came out, then when les started playing his fretless 6 string, they all pulled their frets out too. Gotta be careful about "sharing your gift" lol.
Freakin' way cool!
When you go, it goes somewhere else.
Man, that's heavy.
Jason is lucky for sure
Stay authentic
Keep it real man good job good karma 🤟♾
so do more vids about his skills please ,,, but im a kid playin since the 80s dont know shite .. dont let it go if you are real
Which brand did Les Claypool say was ergo? I couldn't quite make out what he said. CT basses are out of my price range so curious about the other brand he mentioned.
Pachyderm bass guitars. Sorry to rain on your parade but probably just as much money as a CT or more.
@@jolemite2639 Thanks!
Where is Les Claypool?
Belly of the Whale. Amazing find…
I wish I had $15,000 laying around.
i mean, thompson basses are almost synonymous with les claypool... i see a thompson bass, i almost immediately think of primus 😅
Carl Thompson ( not to be confused with Thompson guitars that have nothing to do with Carl) made basses before Les, and for many other great bassists and guitar players... Much more to the story than just Primus... Don Baldini, Stanley Clarke, Lou Reed, Hank Williams III, Anthony Jackson, Chuck Rainey, Larry Graham, and many more.
Hate to be that guy, but I think you mean "On the Roam".
No, please BE THAT GUY .. damn auto correct got me!!! Thank you, my friend... I was burnt up from cutting this into little slices for socials. I uploaded this at the end of a long session because it was the only way to get it Carl to see it
I could not think of a less deserving person!!! What a joke!!!! Play us something Jason!!!! You can't!!!!! You've got the technique of a drunk two year old on a bass!!!!! You can't just hang out with people you don't deserve to and buy instruments you don't deserve!!! You actually have to play!
Jason actually is a really great human being. Granted, he may not be the best player... That being said he understands his own limitations. The shop originally built him two basses; a six string fretted, and and a four string fretless. Jason decided to sell the fretless and had Carl sign it, he then asked Carl what charities he liked. Carl has done many meet and greets with Make A Wish foundation, so that is who he chose. Jason also signed the bass, then told Carl that he was going to auction the bass off and donate all the proceeds to Make A Wish on Carl's behalf. So yeah, very great guy, and very much so deserving to have a CT.
Since when is world-class skill a requirement to be able to tell a story and shine a spotlight on an incredible human being? Nobody cares whether Jason Momoa can play bass at a high level, he's using his time and resources to show off the artistry and personality of one of the greatest bass builders of all time. He earned that CT bass, not by being a skillful player, but by giving respect and honor to Carl Thompson.
Why do people like this never have content of themselves playing? Lol What a joke . . . Imagine being so jealous of Aquamans playing you gotta rage internet hate from a blank profile
Gatekeeper pos.
dude can't play lol
Where are your videos at??
