- In this video, I rebuild my goldfish system to address possible issues related to metals leaching into the water (zinc and iron), chemicals from pressure-treated wood supporting the two-tank system leaching into the water, possible breeding of bad bacteria in low circulation areas between the tanks and liners, and reform the system to be more stable overall and have less risk of failure. When you end up moving out you should get those large pond tubs that get dug into the ground, then etc with the river rocks outside on the borders and sand

Yeah i agree the goldfish are beautiful but the setup leaves a little to be desired. Moving in the right direction though.

I’ve had a smaller version of the second tank you bought for YEARS out in the pasture for my llamas drinking water and in winter for hay. It’s the best material ever.
The system now looks much better than before. I never trusted those metal stock tanks. I never used them and now I will definitely not even try,thanks to this very useful video.

She had window planters all around the edges and drift wood that was all planted!

This is my dream tank ,a big tank that have good filtration and all in a green house so the fish will be safe.

Luke, a great video about the process. A suggestion for filtration, which I use, changed my goldfish keeping. Please take a look at some videos about koi filtration using 2/3 drum K1 media. The first 2 barrels are static K1, for bio stagnation to easily remove waste and the 3rd is fluidized K1 for ammonia removal. Very effective.

Yep Luke it looks really nice. That is the thing with us fish keepers . All of sudden there's a problem that can only be solved by hard work, knowledge, lots of time and MONEY. Well done. Your love of goldies is obvious..
That type of plastic is called "structural foam" and it's actually pretty strong. It's an injection molded plastic that expands in the mold and those cracks look like a flaw in the molding process.
What happened to Maurice?
Unfortunately, it was his death that made me change this system up. Didn’t want to talk about it because I am still pretty upset about it, but after finding him dead, I knew something was seriously wrong.

You must live in a warm area? I live up in Canada and just ordered some Ranchu from goldfishisland, but no way could we have an outdoor setup here!
I would love to do a set up like this one day! I wish people would do there research and give there gold fish the lives they deserve instead of shoving them into tiny tanks or bowls.
Agreed! I had to help teach my friend proper goldfish care since they were handed 2 unwanted fair goldfish from a relative. My friend didn't know that tap water had chlorine in it and it burned their poor gills up bad, I had to quickly lend them a spare 10 gallon I had laying around and told them about making tap water safe, the nitrogen cycle, what ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are, etc. They're now in a 29 gallon which is better than what most people have 😆. I told them they're gonna get HUGE so they've been slowly upgrading and dreading it at the same time lol. Tanks are costly
I use those black stock tanks for water troughs from my horses water. I keep feeder goldfish in them to help keep the algae down. Those fish live forever! Plastic is way better than galvanized for sure.
Just getting into goldfish. Not doing hydroponics yet! But I’m debating best filter and budgeting. I like the idea of starting with tubs.
I thought it was only me who'd done this, I made a wood tank with a internal gravel filter and drain the water from the roof into the tank. 9 months in and all if going well!

filtration is a critical part of the whole system. Thank you for sharing all the details. Any sump filter do you plan to use?
there will be no sump...i can tell you this for certain. He wouldn't have built a 5 gallon canister filter if he was going to run a sump....... and the ponds would need to be elevated.
Do you have heaters I'm there for when the temperature drops?
Love your videos! I have a canister filter on my 55 gallon for my 3 orandas, but I've been having problems with cloudy water. Is there something more I could do? I use ammonia killing media in the filter, but is there something else I could add to help? I also use the tank clarifying liquid, but I imagine I shouldn't have to use it every other day.
Hmm it sounds like a high ammonia problem, have you tested your ammonia levels recently?

With my goldfish tanks I found that if I changed more than 1/2 of the water they would start to suffocate because it had not "aged" - so I only changed not more than 1/3 of the water each time I cleaned the tank

Hey Luke, been watching for a while. Ive never seen you address this. I have 6 small fantails. 2 of them, every time they eat, get floaty. Doesnt matter if its sinking food, peas, bloodworms, brine shrimp. I think they're dying an the next day they're back to normal. Any suggestions?
Unluckily for the fish, these beautiful fancy goldfish have been bred for colors and looks rather than functionality :( still love them to dead but basically, they still have organs in that compact space. In order to make room for food coming in, they have to take room from other organs, and sometimes that will make their boyancy so far out of wack, it’s hard to swim. You’re probably doing everything right and it can get so discouraging to see fish looking sickly but it just happens sometimes🤷♀️ hope you’re little ones live long lives!!

who does your fish eat sand? is it a bad habit? do you make them puke the sand out? do they have a nutrient deficiency?
Its natural because goldfish come from carp and carp in nature sift which means that they are looking for food in the sand and the sand that gets eaten its small so it will simply pass thru there system without any harm done
This might be a silly question but why don't you have any decorations, plants, etc in the tubs. I would just think that the goldfish would have to have stuff in there to keep them entertained or busy. Im not calling abuse, you seem very knowledgable in the subject and they look very healthy and happy, but I'm just wondering why the tubs are so plain.

If it had a crack most likely it was gonna fail sooner or later, doesn't matter if it's big or small or if it's around the corner up top.
