    Abandoned & Forgotten Places
    Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
    Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
    With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on RUclips!
    Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
    On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
    A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
    DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
    Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
    Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
    Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
    Ok, now for the ugly stuff...
    WARNING
    Abandoned mines and ruined structures have many hazards and can severely injure or even kill you. Do not attempt to copy or re-enact situations or scenarios seen in this video. Stay Out and Stay Alive: • Gly Says... STAY OUT S...

    Soldered food cans were in common use in the 1950s and 1960s. The FDA did not ban them until the 1990s. Soldered seam cans weren't the most common type on a grocery store shelf, in my recollection, but were in at least limited use back when I was a part time grocery clerk.
    Very nice program as always. Thank you.

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  Год назад +2

      “Gly”: When the American Can Company was established in 1901 most all cans after that period had lapped seams without solder. Here’s an excellent antique can resource for you to look at: www.ntc.blm.gov/krc/system/files?file=legacy/uploads/22015/HistoricArtifactIDGuide.pdf

      I can only tell you what I observed at home growing up and as a later as a grocery clerk/college student. In the 1950s and early 60s toothpaste was still packed in lead tubes, and solder was still used in canning some products. I don't recall seeing any new soldered cans after the mid/late 60s, But I also no longer worked in a grocery store.
      Here is a quote from the USDA site.
      "No. The canned food industry in the United States stopped using lead-soldered cans in 1991. In 1995, the Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule prohibiting the use of lead solder in all food cans, including imported products. Metal cans, which are made of sheet steel - sometimes with a coating of tin - are now welded closed at the seams. The inside of the can may also have an enamel or vinyl protective coating."@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces

    I must say. This is the one channel that I have continued to watch for the longest. I have gone so far as to start exploring myself. Mainly just caves for now because I'm scared of mines. The collapse is possible in caves it is less likely than in a mine. It is however getting my feet wet sometimes literally. I have become fascinated with all things mine and cave I've even started my own little collection of antique gear which is now on display at my house. I really do appreciate the physicality involved to bring us such amazing content. The pure excitement in your voice and especially now that you have a partner gets me excited and videos like this are truly a gift. Yes it would be more awesome to be there with you and be able to touch and experience these things but you save us the hike and the quality of video is on compared. I can't wait until next week. Keep it up U2

    Hey Gly, I have a light for you. Made by Feit Electric. It's all aluminum construction, rechargeable or 3 c batteries.3 brightness levels 3000 lumens, 1500 lumens and 700 Lumins. My son calls it my lightsaber. I've never seen anything so bright. Is is also focusable. I got it at Costco for $30. Might be ideal for those huge caverns.

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  Год назад +2

      “Gly”: I’ve experimented with all kinds of various lighting over the years. The lighting needs to have a wide distribution width to distribute light over a wide area. Sure, some lights are very bright but a narrow distribution width will only create a bright globe of white light which is no good on camera. Nobody likes watching the white globe of doom.

    From last wk"s video,.... got to see that "bucket" has now taken a "back seat". Well, its more interesting for you to be speaking to a "partner" than a "bucket"....ha,ha. When you showed the first remnent of a wheelbarrow we could see the mineral caused by thermal, now rock, activity just above it at At 10:52, LOOK! the footwall. So the miners were working the mineral that butted up to that. (in otherwards the fissure that was flowing thru this sediment.)As you walked you came upon the deep winze. I could see your mind saying "get the rope". The music background was great as it made for a exiciting feeling, as you went down the ladder w/rope assist. At 21:59, you're right Laura! looks like a skull. There were wheelbarrows left at every level....huh? Oh shoot, @ 35:36, wanted to see part of yours and Laura's "rope climb" back up. I too was wondering where you were cause there was no " bridge" earlier, on today's explore.(@37:42). Remember, yes!, the bridge you built when you were last at Thunder Ridge. Thats cool. Today's footage was alittle slower moving, having along your partner, but you got the stopes of Thunder Ridge primarily covered. Thank you for finishing the "original explore".

    translation time, in the Isle Of Man, my birthplace there was a lot of mines. ore bucket was known as a kibble, a hand drill steel was known as a jumper, as it jumped in your hand when it was struck. miners where space permitted, worked in pairs, one holding the jumper, and rotating it a bit between blows, the other with a 4 pound hammer, 4 pounds being the most efficient weight, doing the max blow without too much fatigue, miners would change places regularly, candles were tallow............

    Good video! Good and safe to have an adventure buddy! Just in case you go down, she can tell everyone where not to dig so as to not disturb you. LOL 😁. Also figured out why your video seems a bit different. You are not wearing your rear helmet light, Laura is wearing it. 🇨🇦👍👍

    The rock above that mine must be very porous looking at all the water dripping off the roof in places.
    You said that the area had been hit heavily with snow this year, saw some of that evidence on another channel.
    Could it be that when the mine was being worked they had a really bad winter and the place was inaccessible for months and then got too wet to work ?
    I would imagine that if the moisture content got too high down there, blasting using black powder would have been nearly impossible as it would have absorbed water as the charge was being set into the hole.

      “Gly”: This area was very difficult to mine in the winter but somehow, they did it. Yes, during spring snow melt these dolomite limestone mines get pretty wet and keeping the powder dry during blasting was a chore.

    It was really sharp with that graphic overlay of the mine map.
    Looks like you might be investing in more rope for the future right?

    Might be worth looking into a LEP torch, they throw a beam a long way. Not great for general use, but how far does this haft/stope go for, great if its straight, may not show up so well on the camera thou

      “Gly”: I’ve tried those. It shows up on camera as nothing more than a big white globe of light. Dark colored mines are challenging when it comes to camera lighting.

    Is that the famous Gly's Folly Bridge from the Thunder Ridge Mine? Would be cool to get to the huge vertical shaft and see if the permanent snow features are bigger now from last winter.
