Kharavela and the Revenge of Kalinga

- Kalinga, once part of the Mauryan Empire, was one of the many states that emerged after the decline of the Mauryan Empire. The rise of Kalinga that happened in this period, is mostly known through an inscription that was found in a cave which is situated some three miles away from the city of Bhubaneswar. This inscription called the Hathigumpha inscription was commissioned by someone called Kharavela. This inscription provides us insight into the history of Kalinga and about the reign of Kharavela. In this video, I talk about this inscription and the history of Kalinga.

Good detailing about Hathigumpha inscription of Udaygiri Khandgiri caves situated in Bhubanshwar. Not only that the inscription starts with the "Namokar Maha Mantra" which is core Mantra of Jainism since ages, the caves situated at Udaygiri and Khandgiri were excavated by King Kharavela and later by his successors for the Jain Saints. The Khandgiri hill has many caves which has several idols of Jain Tirthankara engraved in them. The Nav muni gumpha, Bara Bhuji Gumpha, etc. have Jain Tirthankara idols situated therein. The Barahbhuji Gumpha has idols of Jain Tirthankara and the Shasan Devis of those tirthankaras which are now been worshipped as Maa Barabhuja. Just a request to all that we should not convert the original identity of the historical places that have been given by our ancestors to us and these are treasures for us. Thanks
As some one from Bhubaneswar I agree that this historic cave was converted to a resting place for Jain monks by king Kharabela.

@@me-id6ok because that part of Kalinga or later Utkala was conquered by Krishnadeva Raya and merged with the Vijayanagar Empire. There are also Odia populations in Jharkhand and Chattisgarh whose regions could not be assimilated into Odisha, or Orissa, state when it was formed in 1936. To this day those areas are called "Bicchinanchal".
Wish we had our own tradition of historography like the Greeks or Romans or Chinese. We woould know so much more about ancient India.
Rig veda puranas and some hints in other texts r ignored for obvious reasons. Puranas r mytho-historical texts. So are greek texts. But bias against indian texts is easily visible in our history.
Historiography without bias or myths was pretty much non existent in that age. Even the Greeks who have written about chandragupta write shit lik a lion slept surrounding chandragupta to protect him, an elephant from the wild allowed chandragupta to climb on it using its trunk. This problem of myths only increases in indian texts of this time

Kharvela was king of kings, the greatest Kalinga warrior and idol of all Khandayats. During his rein kalinga territory was probably the largest of all times.
Also during maharaj kapilendradeva we have a greater kingdom.samrat kharvela was also marvellous
@RajnasyaNo,cheti is misinterpretation.kharavela is from ancient kalinga dynasty
He was the one besides Sikhs who defeated Afghans, whereas British, Russians and Americans failed. This is the reason he finds mention in military history taught in institution like NDA and IMA.
Interesting episode as it knits together several events Satakarni, Tamils, Western dialect of Prakrit, Jain image, Yavanas, Magadh, possibly Shungas. I read about Kharavela in A L Basham and the Tamil event in Nilakantha Sastri.
The etymology of Kharavel is one question
Khara means salt or salty, vela means coast. Even today a beach is called "Bela Bhumi" in Odia. Kharavela therefore means "Salt Coast" or "Salty Coast", a logical name for some one whose kingdom bordered the sea.
Other coast might be sweet coast during kaaravela time.

The oldest mention of the Tamil Confederacy gets it's mention from Hathigumpa Inscription
The Tamira Confederacy:
The Mauryas, ruled Kalinga before Kharavela, and they find mention in Tamil Sangam literature which talks of the parasols, banners and chariots of the Mauryas; Mauryas cutting paths in mountains for their chariots to pass; Refers Mauryas as strangers (vamba moriyar) who came with a desire to conquer the South. So, these are proofs of Mauryan military ambitions in Tamil Regions.
But there are no records of a Mauryan conquest of the Tamil region. Maybe, because of the Mauryan threat, the Tamil kings banded together, and their unity acted as a deterrent. This is the confederacy that Kharavela perhaps broke, roughly around 173 or 172 BCE. If the confederacy was 113 years old at that time, then it must have come into existence around 285 or 286 BCE, which would be the time of the Mauryan ruler Bindusara, the father of Emperor Asoka.
The maurya empire fought war of kalinga and take kalina jin ( bangwan rishabhnath) to magadh after 100 years kalinaga is ruled by raja kharvel and take return kalinga jin

It is also possible that King Ashoka had employed Greek and Scythian mercenaries in his Kalinga campaign given it's bloody course.
Could be, but we don't have any evidence for it.
Our kharavela have taken revenge from ashoka by destroying and defeating magadha, odia khandyat have avenged it,jai jagannath
Quite possible. Since Hindu soldiers didn't hurt or kill women or children as they were bound by dharma, may be these mercenaries were used to cause the bloodbath, since they had no morality or ethics.
Jyotirmaya mohanty, did you forget how our odia khandyat also killed 2 lakh army of ashoka, odia khandyat also massacre large army killing many army of ashoka,
King Ashoka didn't employ a single foreign mercenary. Instead all the Kshatriyas saw all foreigners as malechas.
Kalidas writes that when Ashoka came to Kashmir, he expelled all people'of foreign origins. So yes they were very race conscious. Kalingas and other indo aryan groups were not seen as foreigners but different nation states.

@@JayVardhanSingh cool, I love ur videos. Have always had a particular affinity for history and archaelogy. About to start college soon, thinking of choosing history or philosophy as my major if I do BA. Idk, much about my own family history sadly :(.but my grandfather says we were independent nawabs and sultans based primarily in southern and central india, and that after the revolt of 1857 when my ancestors sided with bahadur shah zafar, the British derided us of all our regal titles, seized our money, properties and jewellery and left us destitute. After that we came under the service of the nizams who bestowed upon my paternal great-great-great grandfather the 'Jagīr' of Gogi in modern-day Karnataka. The name Sayyid/Sayed/Syed or any of it's other variations means "Lord" or "baron" in arabic, and is conferred on the descendants of Prophet Muhammad through Husayn . My ancestors most likely came to India from Iran in the 12th century as refugees to evade the Mongol horde. That's it, that's all I know.
That's quite an interesting history.
@Самрат Рой yes that is true many hindu nobles and merchants converted to Islam and adopted elite arab titles. But even after that, these people were still part of the nobility in India. My ancestors themselves were nawābs
@Самрат Рой predominantly in the South. My great great great grandfather was the جاگیردار (Jagīrdaar) of Gogi in modern-day karnataka. He was granted this by nizām mahboob ali khan after his forefathers rebelled against the British in 1857 and lost all their land, titles, holding etc.
Yavava/Yavanar is Greek is people. Many ancient Tamil Literature denote Greek as Yavanar.
Bro kharavelan tamilan? ?
My theory is that Kharabela existed before Mouryan Empire. That's why there was a mention of Nanda king but not any Mouryan king. Another point is that, Jainism was very popular until Chandrgupta Mourya, because Kharabela was also a follower of Jainism. We don't see many kings after this period. 3rd point is Kali ga was a strong empire until the Kalinga war by Ashoka. It is not so believable that after a bloody defeat in this war Kalinga could became power again in 100 years. Most probably the Kharabela's empire existed until the Kalinga war.
