I used to get stoned and play guitar on my couch too. But I never thought to make a career of it. Sean, you are brilliant! I love your instructional videos.
I write everything out so i can see it. This makes so much sense!!! One of the best videos I have seen. I watch about 5 teachers right now ( and pay for one on patreon), but you are dominating all my time. It's the humor and teaching method that have me hooked!
Thanks! For those who want some summary (and to be corrected if I’m wrong!): you can take any major key’s 1, 4 and 5 (which are also major chords in that key) and play their pentatonics. They are “strong” enough to sound smooth in that key. And moreover, transition to the pentatonic of their (1, 4 or 5) adjacent minor key via 6th note is still sounds cool if you end riff with the original pentatonic’s note (1, 4 or 5; like “returning back”).
Literally my head exploded when I understood the implication of what he was saying it's pretty crazy like I kind of took a little bit of time to let it sink in
Mind is blown... Excellent lesson.. One of your best. Tying in Major, Minor, Intervals, Fret Board coverage. Anybody with basic theory will learn a lot. Trying it out this afternoon.. Thank You.
Greetings from Costa Rica. I wish I had found your channel years ago, but I'm learning a lot now; unlocking the fretboard and experimenting with Maj7 and other chords at church service this very Wednesday. You are the best and funniest teacher.
Wonderful tutorial .. thank you so much.. because of ur valuable tips I stated soloing slowly n learning so much. All ur lessons are so valuable . Thx a lot
Thanks a bunch for the lightbulb ignition. You explained and demonstrated this so well that I understood it all, and it connected together a lot of stuff you had already taught me. Best wishes from an old guy in the UK. :D
Man you make this stuff so simple instead of it being a whole bunch of learn all this esoteric crap just linking things that are easier to understand like take the bar chord which is the root and the fifth and then go over a step that's the sixth duh I'd have never put that together though that's fantastic thank you
We would call those 'landing spots, or places'. When you get lost (not if, because you will 8) in a solo, you have a place to land and re-start. An octave is down 2 and up 2 (adjusting 1 for the B string), so you always know where the next 1 is. You could also pick a key, then find all the 1's, then the notes to play and the ones to skip is the scale. After awhile you can hear that, and things get easier. 50-ish years ago we didn't have anyone to tell us things like that, like YT, it was an "ah ha" moment when we figured it out ourselves! LOL So everyone thank Sean for all the great tips and tricks!! 8) JMHO --gary
If your girl friend is not Andrea, Katie or Kindred (Pasha)? She/he deserves extra guacamole for allowing you to spend so much time with beautiful people. Another great tutorial Sean. kevin O'Rourke
I wonder if jimi Hendrix knew this i would say yes i think he knew a lot more theory than people realize plus his incredible ear for music that most of the old school great musicians had back in the day
I think the thing about all these older musicIans is environment in which they grove up. They were surrounded by blues, jazz, folk, country & western, classical, soul, early rock n roll, by their early age, so they had a feeling for putting ideas together easily into a creative form, for rhythm and creating interesting melodies. They didn't have to study like we do, since we are usually surrounded by pop. Also, older musicians like Hendrix learned by watching other musicians playing, and in communication with them. Nowadays, people usually learn it individually, while sitting at home, and in a free time from doing other things.
Great lesson. Thank you very much. I think this is going to help me out tremendously. Keeping my eye open for some more great lessons from you; again thank you
Not confusing to me, but could be for beginners. An individual note does not have a relative minor note. Major scales have relative minor scales, and minor scales have relative major scales. Not chords, not notes. In the key of C major, A is the root of the relative minor scale, and in the key of A minor, C is the root of the relative major, etc. It is absolutely useful to understand the relationships between chords. For example, adding an A to a C major chord creates a C6 chord. Likewise, adding a G to an A minor chord creates an Am7 chord, The real brain twister is that both of those chords ( C6 & Am7 ) have the same notes. Usually, the lowest note is the name of the chord, but if you play with a bass player, even that isn't required.
I began guitar lessons when I was 9 years old much to my chagrin, as my mama lost her mind when she realized I had a natural ear. But the “teacher” never went over any music theory, zippo, nada. How can learn any music theory now? Have natural ear for the piano and violin too. Any suggestions?
Is that always true? That the relative minor is what is the minor chords in the scale or the minor notes in the scale? Guess I'm being lazy I can look that up myself I'm just curious
ok, I'll lay off the avocado in my tacos, if you want to skip off the 6rh tone from your progression! Seriously though, OMG, this is just the parts that have been missing for me. Thank you, thank You Sean!
Great lesson Shawn, you are very intelligent, love the analogy rice beans guacamole, but I think these bean are giving me the ..... because something stinks, oh never mind its my playin'...jk...lol...but seriously does that Donner Thinline need a set up or will sound nice right out the box, after tuning it? Thx
Woman handing me my food at a taco place. I noticed she had a tattoo of a halved avocado. I asked her if that tattoo cost $1 more than all the others. I was so disappointed when she didn't get it...
What I detest even more than a Mexican restaurant add-on, Sean...........is when the wife (who only drinks ice water at home) orders a refillable cup of crazy priced restaurant brewed $3.95 iced tea at our favorite restaurant.......takes one or two sips during dinner..........then refuses any refills (because it will make her need bathroom breaks because we're traveling on!! She makes her own money and she's very easy going but this has always driven me crazy!! When her dad takes her or us out to dine...........ice water only!!
Rice, beans, and pico......... your missing meat and drop the beans...... vegans...... missing out on one of the best parts of life. Amazing food. If you ever decide to cheat and eat a real protein one day then call me so I can walk you through making the most delicious burrito you will ever have the pleasure of putting in your mouth Joke redacted lol You wouldn't limit your sonic pallet (musical ingredients ) but you have limited your ingredients you can cook with. I'm the dude that's like. That smells good let me try it. Eats some and asks what is it. They are like it shredded bull weiner. And I'm like damn give me the recipe lol Then they are like well you start with a can of crushed pig A$$ holes and simmer them in 2 cups of water half cup of milk and...... And if they are Puerto Rican I already know to just nail it with a bunch of Sazone and Adobo lmao.
I love the smell of mastering guitar in the morning
I used to get stoned and play guitar on my couch too. But I never thought to make a career of it. Sean, you are brilliant! I love your instructional videos.
Playing pentatonic out of position by leading from the 6th is brilliant. Tastes better than guacamole. Nice tip. Forget the forms.
Thanks so much!

This is one of my favourite light bulb video lessons! Super tips for improv beginners. Thanks Sean for your informative and fun videos.
When I'm not busy eating dry burritos and drinking from my tiny water cup I enjoy playing with all the add ons! Cheers Sean!!
This whole lesson changed my life...so mind blowingly simply way to break down such a complex topic
Mind is blown... Excellent lesson.. One of your best. Tying in Major, Minor, Intervals, Fret Board coverage. Anybody with basic theory will learn a lot. Trying it out this afternoon.. Thank You.

You are the best and funniest teacher.
It's crazy how much fun those Donner guitars are to play! They stay in tune and easily intonate. That makes playing a lot more fun! Great Lesson!
This is a great compliment to your recent "2 strings at a time" stuff!
Wonderful tutorial .. thank you so much.. because of ur valuable tips I stated soloing slowly n learning so much. All ur lessons are so valuable . Thx a lot

You get all these guitars. You must be as good as we think you are.
Thanks for all the lessons/pro-tips
Nice lesson Sean. This will definitely help me move forward in understanding how to combine things I already know to improve soloing.
You are definitely helping to turn on the light in my understanding of how to play up & down along the fretboard! Thanks Sean 👍🏾👍🏼🎯
This is one of the best of the list of the best guitar tutorials
This was an important piece to move around more freely. Thanks. Great job!

You are awesome. Love your demeanor and teaching style. Thank you. PS- agree with the guacamole rant. Lol.

Incredible. It's been right in front of my face and I didn't see it. Truly incredible....
Thanks Sean! You really help me to start connecting the dots in theory 🤘

Great lesson Sean, thank you. That's a YES PLEASE on a minor scale lesson too.
Excellent lesson Sean! Thank you for showing these connections 🎶🤜🏾🤛🏽👍🏽👍🏼
Thanks Sean starting to make sense
Yes on that minor lesson! This is so useful! Thank you!
Thanks! That Donner looks nice!
Great lesson. Thank you very much. I think this is going to help me out tremendously. Keeping my eye open for some more great lessons from you; again thank you
Thanks for another great lesson Sean. Appreciated!
The intro this is hilarious 😆 About the Guacamole. He sounds like a bar fly 😂😂
Yes on doing the Minor. Would be great to learn the how the work different.
Great lesson!! I'm putting this in the arsenal right away! Thanks for sharing your knowledge Sean. :)
Please do a Minor Chord video! Absolutely loved this.
Very good video. Thanks.

So if i look at the circle of 5ths, (something i have never been inclined to actually do) the chunk in the outer ring will be C
this is fretboard gold, light bulb moment!!! thanks my man.....Ryde on my friend, Ryde!!
Valuable and something more to practice while waiting for the bbq. Safe weekend to you and your posses. BTW, how was the mini horse ride?
Nice lesson. Can you put a coda on the lesson by playing a song and adding in one of the pentatonic scales you demonstrate.
Happy memorial weekend

Great video...!
GREAT video lesson! How to go on when 3rd string is reached?? Hope you make more videos like this one. Minors? hanks!
What would be a good backing track to practice this over?
The best is when they use the invisible ink effect to text ‘add guac’ to you
Extra guac... haha you are a strange one my friend... Keep up the great work!
