I tried like 20 times with another video... it failed to mention that you would need to start holding the homelink button a second early and it also didn't mention clicking the button a couple times after you had programmed it into the motor. It finally worked! I've had this car for 11 years and its never worked lol. Thanks a ton! I hate that old busted remote I've been using.
reminds me that the official directions for linking blutooth to my stereo also never worked. I had to go down a rabbit hole. The official directions in the manual will not work at least on android 9-13... you have to use the steering wheel buttons to set it up... the head stereo controls will simply not work for you on a subaru 2011 wrx premium in my experience across multiple android phones over the years.
The garage remote and the learn button were both required for programming for my 2011 outback. It may be due to an old battery but this is how it worked for me which is close to what the video shows. 1. Hold down the first and third button for thirty seconds like it shows in the video. 2. Hold down your current garage door opener remote and 1 of the 3 doors on the mirror like in the video. 3. Press the learn button on the garage door and get back into the vehicle and press the button you just programmed for two seconds, 3 times. The garage door should now open or close, if it does, the programming was properly done.
You have to do both, opener button, and the learn button on the actual opener too. You program the remote to the mirror, as described here, till rapid red blink, then hop on ladder and push the learn button on the opener itself, then back to the mirror and hit the button you're programmed with the remote one more time. Now it will work. Maybe some people have luck with doing one or the other, but my mother's '15 Forester wouldn't sync until I followed the instructions above that I found on a Subaru dealers RUclips. Then it worked on the first try.
Thank you! Worked like a charm!! Read the owner's manual for the Subaru and for the garage door opener. After reading for 20 minutes, still couldn't figure it out. After watching your video once, it was a done deal! Thanks for posting.
Nice tutorial! ...and for those who may run into the same problem I did. The first programming step (using the handheld remote) MAY need the additional step 2. Devices with rolling code technology may require this and that's probably the majority of garage doors out there. Read on and good luck! ... Once you "teach" the HomeLink mirror to recognize the signal the light may flash red quickly for 2 seconds, then go solid red - but still not operate the door. If this happens you need to press the "learn" button on the opener and within 30 seconds press and hold the desired button on the mirror. Apparently this is a "sometimes" required second step. FINALLY mine works!
What a great video. I couldn't find the instructions in the manual so checked here, you made this incredibly easy. Thanks again, one of the best videos on How To I've ever seen.
Did everything exactly as you said, exactly how the manual said, exactly how several other videos have said, and it still doesn't work for me. Everything goes perfectly, it just doesn't connect to my garage door from the car. It's a shame technology is so selective on who it works for
I was having issues programming the Homelink to open my garage on my 2016 Subaru Legacy. None of the previous techniques worked until I discovered this: I deleted the codes by pressing and holding button 1 and 3 for about 20 seconds. Then you take your garage door opener remote and press it simultaneously with the button you want to program for about 8 to 15 seconds. After, go to your garage door opener unit and press the learning code button, then you have 30 seconds to go back to the car and press the button (you programmed) 3 times. The light on the garage door opener unit should blink. This worked for me. Hope it helps.
Thank you had a lot of trouble with mine owned it for 2 years tried it and no luck decided to try it again and found that after I watched it a few times I had to use the motor and click it 3 times and it worked ! Thank you!!
Video is old but it still has game !! Got me going in just a few seconds. Thanks for the CODE CLEARING tip since we just replaced the door motor !! Yay Back in business. Thank you
Thanks for the video. I programmed my 2016 Subaru Outback lickity split by pushing the learn button on the back of the garage motor, got in my car and held down on the button I chose until it stopped blinking (5 seconds or so) and it was programmed.
Couldn't get mine to work. I think it was weak batteries but I didn't have any button batteries around the house. Finally, came across a suggestion that you move the garage remote around from 1-3 inches, kind of waving it around the outside of the rearview mirror as you hold both buttons. That worked!
Thanks for your instruction. I synced my Forester in September without a problem. My wife just bought a Crosstech and synced the mirror. Shortly the same day we noticed that neither of us were able to operate our doors. I have tried every which way without success. Please help. Regards
Thanks for making this easy. Only needed to hold 10 seconds in my '17 Forester, but everything else worked perfectly. Now I should teach them how to do it at the dealership.
Thank you!!! You were a great help. Apparently Subaru have different instructions for different models. This look exactly like the mirror on my 2015 Crosstrek and it worked. Took about 10seconds to learn. I'm psyched!
This worked perfectly! Thanks for the guide! Easy to follow and do. I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza that i just installed a new-to-me Homelink mirror, and I was able to get it programmed. Thanks!
Hi this little of the topic but if you can help that would be awesome 👏 I have forest 2019 and blue light is blinking on windshield top left corner It never did I drove it parked turned off and then I saw the blue blinking light only when I close the car (locked) when unlocked it’s not blinking so I don’t want the battery to die and didn’t lock it.Can you help ?
This did not work for me. I cannot get the remote to connect to my 2006 Subaru Forester's Homelink on the mirror. When I click both of them at the same time, the mirror Homelink would blink at a slow rate and it would not connect. I tried to press the learn button on the motor and tried connecting it to the mirror that way and still, nothing happens. Any idea?
I had to press the mirror button five or six times while using the learn button on the motor. Three wasn't enough and I read three or more times, so I just kept pressing it till it worked.
Ok, so I finally y got it! This video, while good, did not show the third way to program your HomeLink. The following worked for me the first time: Please use a ladder or other device. Do not stand on your vehicle to perform the next steps. On the garage door motorhead, press and release the learn code button - the red LED will begin to blink. Get back into your vehicle and press the desired HomeLink button one time. Press the desired HomeLink button a second time. Press the HomeLink button a third time. You should see the garage door open/close. HomeLink programming is complete.
Man you are awesome! Happen to stumble onto your video and was like "no shit?". Had no idea that's what those buttons were for. Don't have to buy another garage door opener!
Thank you so much for your video! Made programming the door a breeze - it didn't occur to me that I hadn't cleared the old presets & I was so confused 🙊
I had two things mounted to the windshield at this time, a radar detector and a dash camera that looks like a radar detector. Neither are spliced though, they all run up above the windshield and down into the glove box where I have a cigarette lighter adapter for power.
1. Hold left two buttons to clear out old codes 2. Hold far left button and the garage door transmitter button until it blinks on the homelink 3. Press the learn button on your garage door opener 4. Press the far left homelink button to associate the homelink transmitter with the garage door opener. 5. Go have some tea.
+HighjakMotorsports It turns out that you have to first get the Subaru to learn from an existing garage remote, and THEN also pair it with the garage door controller using the purple button.

This, thank you. The 2 seconds hold did the trick.
I dont have the remote...
9 years later, still helping. Thanks man.

Man. Tried for hours with no luck but your video had it working within 3 minutes. Thanks
Thank you! Worked like a charm!! Read the owner's manual for the Subaru and for the garage door opener. After reading for 20 minutes, still couldn't figure it out. After watching your video once, it was a done deal! Thanks for posting.
Your video was great. Done quickly. The Subaru owners manual was confusing and directions difficult to find. I gave up and came here.
Nice tutorial! ...and for those who may run into the same problem I did. The first programming step (using the handheld remote) MAY need the additional step 2. Good reply Paul. That was my issue on a garage door manufactured in 2000 and my 2014 wrx. I need BOTH remote and learn.
What a great video. I couldn't find the instructions in the manual so checked here, you made this incredibly easy. Thanks again, one of the best videos on How To I've ever seen.
Glad it was helpful!

thank you T CARDEN ... you helped me big time by literally 'cracking the code' on programming my opener.
YES!!!!
Thank you T CARDEN! This was so aggravating but I knew so simple. Thank you for the simple procedure. It worked like a charm.
The only problem with your first step is that it clears all learned buttons that you would like to not lose and have to reprogram
thank you!
Thank you so much. Nothing else worked
Thanks! After owning my Wrx for 10 years, I finally used this feature.
Thanks man, just used this for my 2015 Forester XT. The key was clearing the previous ones as I bought it used.
Of the three videos on this topic, this one is the best. Easy directions, clear, and successful. Thank you.
Is it possible to link it then not use the remote or do you always need the remote in the car?
Thank you had a lot of trouble with mine owned it for 2 years tried it and no luck decided to try it again and found that after I watched it a few times I had to use the motor and click it 3 times and it worked ! Thank you!!

thanks for making this video! setting up my homelink mirror took about 10 seconds after watching you vid.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm amazed there were no instructions with the HomeLink!
Glad it was helpful! I was amazed as well when I went to do the setup.

wow,Thanks a bunch! Finding this video was way faster then trying to look for the instruction the plethora of owners manuals I had.
Thanks for making this easy. Only needed to hold 10 seconds in my '17 Forester, but everything else worked perfectly. Now I should teach them how to do it at the dealership.
Worked like a charm, didn't even need to use the learn button, thanks my friend!
4 other videos later, yours helped!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you!!! You were a great help. Apparently Subaru have different instructions for different models. This look exactly like the mirror on my 2015 Crosstrek and it worked. Took about 10seconds to learn. I'm psyched!
Any chance this could work for a gate for a gated community / apartment complex?
Thank you so much for this quick and to the point tutorial.
Thank you! The manual instructions were not super clear. This was very helpful.
Thanks. Third video was the charm. Maybe add a note at the beginning regarding turning on/off car power.
2017 doesn't work with learn button?
Best video about this out there. I watched a dozen others but this one helped. Thanks!
10 seconds and I was done! Thank you for an easy to follow tutorial.
Thank you very much! You made he process very simple and it worked beautifully.
This worked perfectly! Thanks for the guide! Easy to follow and do. I have a 2012 Subaru Impreza that i just installed a new-to-me Homelink mirror, and I was able to get it programmed. Thanks!
What type of phone is he videotaping it on that thing has a massive lens!
Thank you so much for doing this! The abstract instructions were useless!
Worked for my 2016 STI Limited! Thank you!!!!
Hi this little of the topic but if you can help that would be awesome 👏
I have forest 2019 and blue light is blinking on windshield top left corner

My garage unit doesn't have a Learn button .. what do I do?
Thank you for posting this video!😁
TIL you have a car channel! I knew your voice right away. Shoot straight, and keep up the great videos.
Thanks, I have a 2020 WRX limited, different mirror but the same basic steps work.
Still relevant in 2021 thanks

Work in my 2015 Outback!! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you. It worked perfectly
Got it to work with the learn button. Thank you!
A. New no learn button.
Thanks worked great on my newly purchased Kia Sportage. Although had to do the garage learn button.
Thank you !! This worked for my 2017 Outback.

We did show this method and it is described in the description.
pokethekat1 no red learn button
Great video. Worked like a charm. Thanks for your time.
Man you are awesome! Happen to stumble onto your video and was like "no shit?". Had no idea that's what those buttons were for. Don't have to buy another garage door opener!
Thank you. Worked like a charm
This worked for me on my 2010 forester. Thanks so much
Helped me a lot! Confirmed it works on 2015+ sti
jw what shop is that in your videos
I have and Outback programmed, but can’t seem to get the Equinox programmed as well...does that mean you can’t get two cars programmed?
For the same door?
There's no reason why multiple cars can't open the same garage door.
Thanks...i had one vehicle in the way..problem solved!
Thanks! Did the trick
Worked perfect for my 2013 outback! Thanks!!
That worked swimmingly. I didn't even think of using this for the first two years I owned my Subaru. This is going to be great.
Thank you so much for your video! Made programming the door a breeze - it didn't occur to me that I hadn't cleared the old presets & I was so confused 🙊
Worked on the 1st try. Merci!!
Quick question. Is that a radar detector spliced into your mirror?
I had two things mounted to the windshield at this time, a radar detector and a dash camera that looks like a radar detector. Neither are spliced though, they all run up above the windshield and down into the glove box where I have a cigarette lighter adapter for power.
Awesome it work on my 2011 sti, thanks man!
So quick! So simple!!
1. Hold left two buttons to clear out old codes
2. Hold far left button and the garage door transmitter button until it blinks on the homelink
3. Press the learn button on your garage door opener
4. Press the far left homelink button to associate the homelink transmitter with the garage door opener.
5. Go have some tea.
Worked with a 2018 forester
Great vid. Thanks
Thanks for posting!!! so easy.
Thank you so much. Worth to watch.. It really helps
Thank you very much! This is so cool!
@ T Carden same for me. 3 times was the key. Thank you.
Shame that you didn't actually show how to program the button for your rolling-code door controller. Glad it works for you. No luck here.
+Alex Worden Sorry. No idea how to do that.
+HighjakMotorsports It turns out that you have to first get the Subaru to learn from an existing garage remote, and THEN also pair it with the garage door controller using the purple button.
+Alex Worden Can verify, just did it.
That’s awesome - thank you!!
Works perfectly. Thank you!
It's not working for me! But thanks for the video. I have 2009 Forester and tried both ways.
What shop? That's just our garage if that's what you mean.
super helpful and easy, thanks!
Worked great! Thank You For!
total worthy - many thanks.!!
Great video. Thank you!
Thank you !!! This helped me very much with my Subaru Outback 2015 (vs digging through the manual trying to find instructions)
Thanks for the help.
Worked perfectly for me! Thanks man. :)
Good 👍 video!!!
Forgot to mention turn key to the on position, don’t turn on the engine!
Thanks. You are awesome.
Thank you works amazing
Wow 🤩 easy peazy
Thanks!!
🙏🏽 thank you
Thanks so much, it helped me
Alot
worked, thanks!
Thank you!!!
Nope. None of that worked. Cripes my GDO isn't brand new but it's a Genie, Home Link ought to be able to work with that. Lame.
I must be the only one that can’t get the opener or learn method to work. Apparently being a former dealer mechanic is of no help.
No dice. Didn’t work. Would’ve been nice to see an actual demonstration instead of just describing the steps. Thanks for the effort.
