@@dustinsson3007 I did too, but found a fix to it. The important thing is to find out which eye is your dominant eye. With both hands, make a triangle with your thumb and index fingers, about an inch and a half large at the base. Hold your arms straight out with your triangle in the middle of your face in line with your nose. Look at something like a light switch on your wall and slowly bring your hands back to your eyes, keeping the light switch in full view in the triangle. Your brain will guide you to your dominant eye. Some people are cross dominant, like myself. I’m a left handed shooter that is right eye dominant so my double vision was pretty pronounced. To fix that, when you bring your firearm up, if you are right eye dominant, just slightly turn your head to the left. Left eye dominant, move your head slightly to the right. With a little practice, it works perfectly.
I just spent a lot of money last Saturday with a private certified instructor to learn this very topic about trigger reset accuracy. We were lucky to be at a private outdoor tactical long handgun range. It was just the two of us with no range officer looking and standing over our shoulders and barking strict commands. The private lesson was expensive, but this video is also right on point. However, getting outside at a range with a private certified handgun instructor is worth its weight in target bullets, especially to practice on a nice sunny Texas afternoon. Even if you have a LTC handgun license, it's necessary to get out on the range with an instructor every so often. As an FAA certified flight instructor, I know how important it is to get general aviation pilots up there with CFI's and practice simulated engine failures as if they are going to happen every day. They won't, but when the time comes, you will be ready.
Coming back to firearm ownership after some years away (life and money woes, what can I say?), one of the first things I did was find an instructor for some private tutelage. I think it actually saved me money (certainly saved expense of rounds of target ammo) in the long run, even though I sort-of remembered the lessons taught me in high school ROTC more decades ago than I like to admit. And, yes, I see the value in a periodic refresher! Side note: I kind of wish drivers' licensing required periodic retesting and CE hours the way a pilot's license does. I have to think our roads would be safer.
I mostly trained using revolvers since that is my preferred handgun to use while conceal carrying. 100% agree and also recommend using the first distal joint while shooting DA revolvers due to the long and heavy trigger pull.

One of the best features of the Taurus G2/G3 series. Makes them great training guns. Only thing to be aware of is that dry firing it this way, you're always practicing the first shot from the gun. You can't work the trigger reset and the shorter pull for followup shots without manipulating the slide. Still a better option than racking the slide for each dry fire from a Glock. As it's easier to do, you're more likely to do it more often.

What are you talking about Glock is known for the reset trigger click? I believe they were the pioneer of striker fire with trigger rest. Trigger rest is different from Resetting triggers. Forced Resetting triggers are currently be looked at by ATF. As far as finger placement on trigger that individual as not everyone's hands are the same and not all firearms are the same. Finger placement will depend on keeping the anterior Digital section parallel with the frame and using the middle joint to flex and pull trigger straight rearward key being keeping the anterior digital section parallel. What section of finger is on trigger depends on width of grip , length of finger etc etc.
Thanks for the video. I started shooting revolvers in the 1970s. I started shooting semi-automatics in the 1980s. Some of my trainers taught me to use the first joint; some taught me to use the first pad. Until I watched this video, I never knew that it depended on the firearm.
Depends on gun size relative to your hands as well. With big hands and a sub-compact, you'll likely need more finger in there than just the front pad just to get correct biomechanical movement. Small hands and big gun, you may not be able to reach the trigger with more than the tip of your finger. But, these are the extremes and not the normal situation.
I have purchased a few modern firearms with the various lawyer triggers and have eagerly sold them off to buy older normal replacements. It saves me the amount of time to retrain the 50 years of shooting style that I am accustomed to!
good video especially new shooters, practice the 4 safety rules and practice those steps. I just went though this with my sister and she did well for her first time. She did have issues with the trigger and the first pad, also from a small micro 9 to the full size grip. I'd say some people may have longer fingers than others, that should be considered when making a purchase how well it fits your hand.
I shot my S&W 2.0 Compact for LEOSA Qual last July and found some of my rounds had gone into the target’s low right pelvis (I’m a leftie). I’m sure trigger finger placement was the culprit b/c I was used to shooting my Model 66. Thx for the timely reminder.
I just took a class from a person that trains the marines and he says. To put ur finger in to the second pad if u can. And the first pad is more for precision shooting for a rifle. I tried it worked way better than first pad like I was taught. So I am switching to the second pad

When I took my ccw class the instructor said the same thing and my shots were always off. But when I use my hand the other way I seem to have more control and my shots were on target. I have big hands and long fingers and he said that was my problem when I use the first pad.

Your head is adjusting towards the right and lowering head to the firearm. It is best to bring the firearm up to your sight (eyes). Lowering your head a bit for stability is ok but not for the purpose of looking at the gun sights
Placement of the first pad of your index finger on the trigger shoe will vary with hand size / finger length, people with shorter index fingers may experience better results by placing the pad on the trigger shoe closer to the joint / crease of the finger.
Having to rack the slide to rest the trigger during dry fire is actually a good opportunity to add a good training element to your routine. Treat resetting the trigger ad an opportunity to practice type 1 and type 2 malfunction clearing drill. When resetting the trigger, do a full tap-rack with proper orientation of the ejection port. This way you kill two birds with one stone. Do this every time you reset the trigger, a full type 1 or type 2 malfunction clearance, and it will become second nature.
Good video. Good advice on getting a DA or trigger resetting auto for dry fire drills makes a big difference. I use a 92A1. Shooters can use either the first pad or distal joint methods. I use them both depending on the firearm and how my hand fits the grips. On larger pistols and DA pistols I tend to use the distal joint. On smaller pistols, I tend to use the pad. I noticed you're right-handed but seem to be left eye dominant? Or for some reason use your left eye to aim rather than the right. You don't see that often and I'm curious how you came to aim like that? Thanks.

If your looking for that smooth clean trigger pull when your doing your dry fire exercise make sure your weapon is empty then set the trigger by operating the slide to the rear then balance a penny on your front site and slowly and gently pull the trigger then repeat the exercise tell tou can do it without knocking the penny off the sight and when you can do it say 50 times in a row with out dropping the penny , start over only use a dime this time it's smaller and lighter so your pull will need to be that much smoother and consistent when you get to 50 pulls without dropping the dime , get some ammo and a target and go to the range and try some live fire see how consistent you are , but with that exercise your trigger pull should get very consistent and smoth
Ehhhhhhh, that old trick may be useful for first time shooters but if you've tried it you'll realize that you can move the weapon quite a bit without knocking a coin off the sight. You can even pull the trigger incorrectly, pushing the trigger to the side, and still reliably keep the coin on the sight.

Any tips on getting a good purchase ,on the tang, on a concealed carry holster? Appendix carry seems to be worse than the strong right position,for me, but my thumb gets jammed in my body where as I need to regrip the handgun before aiming down range. Which I know isn't a good thing. These new holsters with claws don't help either. The only solution that helped me was to leave my thumb on top of the slide and then slide my thumb over while aiming. Maybe do a vid so it's worth more your while. Thanks
While I know expense is always a huge consideration in training and the gun life style, however I would recommend EVERYONE save the money and get a SIRT pistol, these have reset triggers and can be used in all dry fire drills, as well as use with some IR software for outstanding visual interaction.
I’m curious on your opinion on aiming closing one eye vs keeping both eyes open. I believe you are a LEO in Wisconsin, I also completed a police academy in Wisconsin (and worked PT). When I was trained I was taught to kee both eyes open when firing a pistol. When I did BCT I was taught to close one eye when firing a rifle. I know they are different weapons but there are some similarities in trigger pull, sight alignment, etc. Thanks!
So when I did my CCW class in Ohio back in 09, our instructor was a retried Army Ranger and that's exactly how he showed us. He even said the closer to the tip of your pointer finger on the trigger, the better.
The whole pad of finger on trigger don't work well with monster size hands tho, the finger gets bent awkwardly. For me with 3xl hands, first joint works best, but obviously not everyone is built the same
As a master class in USPSA in PCC and carry optics, yes trigger control is important for basic use of a firearm, but the finger placement isn't. The best pistol uspsa shooter in the world JJ Racaza, will also tell you in his class that he finger placement on every draw isn't the same all the time. Instead what is more important is how you are gripping the gun, and making sure the firearm does not move.
I have been a freestyle NRA match completer in my younger years. 50 yards slow fire, 25 yards timed, and 25 yards rapid fire. This was done over three different calibers; 22, 38, and 45. You are right. You could only used your left or right hand period. I was trained by two army vets friends. You should always squeeze the trigger period and when doing so the bang should always surprise you or if not, you jerked the trigger; so do not jerk it. In some combat shooting they do jerk the trigger this they say, but I have better accuracy not jerking the trigger in this type of situation. It took a lot of shooting experience to just squeeze the trigger.

Hey Kevin what about double action single action auto loading pistols? They have a very hard first trigger pull. Trigger pull aside, this is better learned in a class, not some much on a video.
Something that peole need to learn when advanced is peeping the trigger to the wall as you are drawing the pistol and coming up on target it makes your initial shot faster and more fluid. I suggest you all watch Aaron Cowan with sage dynamics how he does it and how he does follow up shots. You don’t need to release to the reset to shoot. It’s best to come off trigger but never separate finger from trigger then come back on the wall and press the next shot off
I had the same impression. I'm right handed but partially blind in my right eye. As a result my brain has made me left eye dominant and have to shoot like that too.
After eighteen months or so using striker-fired pistols, it's interesting to use a DA/SA trigger and see how the heavier DA pull affects my "accuracy" (yeah, my shot groups do not qualify as "single hole drills" at seven or ten yards--at three yards, I'm not as bad as I think I am, but I'm not as good as I'd like--I'm hoping that a Mantis X2 and a lot of dry-fire drills will help that).
With a DA/SA trigger trying using more finger. You should be able to pull the trigger almost all the way back and stage the trigger. When your trigger finger makes contact with your support hand your hammer should be almost be all the way back and with just a slight squeeze then it should fire.
One of my best friends dad was Marine Corps veteran. One day we went shooting. His dad told us "keep the booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready to fire"
As any amatuer can tell you trigger control is a major issue. But the problem is not as much with the shooter as it is with the design. No matter how gently you squeeze off a round that final touch causes the entire gun to shift postion. Dry fire or not the activation of the trigger changes where the gun is aimed. Usually it will pull off to the side, very so slightly, but enough to make you miss, so it is more than merely trigger control. It is not simply your finger, it is how the gun is built. I find that I have to aim accordingly.
When I dry fire I have my green laser turned on and pointed at a wall at least 10 feet away because it allows me to see even the smallest movement of the gun effected by my trigger press in an exaggerated way...trigger pull is so much better now which is also reflected at the range as well! Just an idea
Stay on target some people are pulling their shots because they got their booger hook so far in the trigger well bowling left or pulling right instead of pulling straight back and even dry firing a good motion of practice if you do have a laser on your firearm and you're pointing it at a Target or a wall of course it's an empty firearm when your dry firing and you're pulling through the take up the brake the wall watch the laser drift a tad to the left or a tad to the right then check your trigger finger is it up to your first digit line or is it in the center of your fingerprint pad one of the best practices for accuracy and for newbies anticipating The recoil
First, I can't find the button for your gun giveaway. Where is it? Second, for a second try at a defective cartridge, try thumbing the hammer back. Third, you failed to mention using the "ready" ammo for practice and replace it with fresh factory ammo every so often. Use the factory duplication handloads for regular range practice and use factory ammo for serious use.
I noticed when I’m dry firing or even firing at the range when I bring my index finger down from the straight flat position on the side of the firearm down into the trigger guard and onto the trigger I bump it and it moves side to side. Any advice on how to move the finger from straight down to the trigger without moving or bumping the firearm.
Just takes practice. I had the same issue with Glocks. My finger would always catch on the trigger guard. I just practiced pulling and dry firing.....over and over until it became like muscle memory.
Look up to the exercise I put on this post and work with that and it will teach you to be quick but smooth and consistent it's the one about balancing a penny on your site and then a dime as you get better
If you're alone in the room with the gun, what difference does it make if there's any ammo in the room? You've checked the gun. Bullets aren't going to load themselves into it, at that point. I'm all in favor of safe procedures, but the ammo in the room emphasis seems a bit much.
Most common issue is people slap the trigger. removing contact with the trigger after pressing the trigger. Keep constant contact with your index finger touching the trigger. Let the trigger reset n follow it forward.

My daughter put up these half inch sticker all over the wall there’s 9 of them. I like to stand in the middle of the room and my wife will yell a color. So I’ll get on target and I’ll squeeze of 3 “shots” making sure my sights stay on the sticker. Ps my gun is DOA
Different hands are … different. I’ve had a few wrist injuries over the years, have carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and a few pinched nerves here and there. My index finger pulls sideways. It just won’t bend and pull back. I have to adjust by wrapping more of my finger around the trigger. When shooting long guns, I just use my middle finger because it can pull straight back.
I like your tips, but enough with all the redundant safety stuff! (I understand the importance of safety, and we know you've checked the pistols and we know it's a dry-fire drill, so give it a rest!)

My CCW class instructor also recommended another good tip: learn to shoot with both eyes open (for better peripheral view).
I get really bad double vision when I do that and just not nearly as good of a shooter

Placement of the first pad of your index finger on the trigger shoe will vary with hand size / finger length, people with shorter index fingers may experience better results by placing the pad on the trigger shoe closer to the joint / crease of the finger.

I use the first joint. My fingers are short and stubby. When I use the first pad, I’m low and to the left POC.
Having to rack the slide to rest the trigger during dry fire is actually a good opportunity to add a good training element to your routine. Treat resetting the trigger ad an opportunity to practice type 1 and type 2 malfunction clearing drill. When resetting the trigger, do a full tap-rack with proper orientation of the ejection port. This way you kill two birds with one stone. Do this every time you reset the trigger, a full type 1 or type 2 malfunction clearance, and it will become second nature.

Good video. Good advice on getting a DA or trigger resetting auto for dry fire drills makes a big difference. I use a 92A1. Shooters can use either the first pad or distal joint methods. I use them both depending on the firearm and how my hand fits the grips. On larger pistols and DA pistols I tend to use the distal joint. On smaller pistols, I tend to use the pad.
I noticed you're right-handed but seem to be left eye dominant? Or for some reason use your left eye to aim rather than the right. You don't see that often and I'm curious how you came to aim like that? Thanks.

If your looking for that smooth clean trigger pull when your doing your dry fire exercise make sure your weapon is empty then set the trigger by operating the slide to the rear then balance a penny on your front site and slowly and gently pull the trigger then repeat the exercise tell tou can do it without knocking the penny off the sight and when you can do it say 50 times in a row with out dropping the penny , start over only use a dime this time it's smaller and lighter so your pull will need to be that much smoother and consistent when you get to 50 pulls without dropping the dime , get some ammo and a target and go to the range and try some live fire see how consistent you are , but with that exercise your trigger pull should get very consistent and smoth

Ehhhhhhh, that old trick may be useful for first time shooters but if you've tried it you'll realize that you can move the weapon quite a bit without knocking a coin off the sight. You can even pull the trigger incorrectly, pushing the trigger to the side, and still reliably keep the coin on the sight.

Any tips on getting a good purchase ,on the tang, on a concealed carry holster?
Appendix carry seems to be worse than the strong right position,for me, but my thumb gets jammed in my body where as I need to regrip the handgun before aiming down range. Which I know isn't a good thing. These new holsters with claws don't help either. The only solution that helped me was to leave my thumb on top of the slide and then slide my thumb over while aiming.

While I know expense is always a huge consideration in training and the gun life style, however I would recommend EVERYONE save the money and get a SIRT pistol, these have reset triggers and can be used in all dry fire drills, as well as use with some IR software for outstanding visual interaction.

I’m curious on your opinion on aiming closing one eye vs keeping both eyes open. I believe you are a LEO in Wisconsin, I also completed a police academy in Wisconsin (and worked PT). When I was trained I was taught to kee both eyes open when firing a pistol. When I did BCT I was taught to close one eye when firing a rifle. I know they are different weapons but there are some similarities in trigger pull, sight alignment, etc. Thanks!

So when I did my CCW class in Ohio back in 09, our instructor was a retried Army Ranger and that's exactly how he showed us. He even said the closer to the tip of your pointer finger on the trigger, the better.

The whole pad of finger on trigger don't work well with monster size hands tho, the finger gets bent awkwardly. For me with 3xl hands, first joint works best, but obviously not everyone is built the same
As a master class in USPSA in PCC and carry optics, yes trigger control is important for basic use of a firearm, but the finger placement isn't. The best pistol uspsa shooter in the world JJ Racaza, will also tell you in his class that he finger placement on every draw isn't the same all the time. Instead what is more important is how you are gripping the gun, and making sure the firearm does not move.
I have been a freestyle NRA match completer in my younger years. 50 yards slow fire, 25 yards timed, and 25 yards rapid fire. This was done over three different calibers; 22, 38, and 45. You are right. You could only used your left or right hand period. I was trained by two army vets friends. You should always squeeze the trigger period and when doing so the bang should always surprise you or if not, you jerked the trigger; so do not jerk it. In some combat shooting they do jerk the trigger this they say, but I have better accuracy not jerking the trigger in this type of situation. It took a lot of shooting experience to just squeeze the trigger.

What sort of pistol was that with the reseting trigger?
Something that peole need to learn when advanced is peeping the trigger to the wall as you are drawing the pistol and coming up on target it makes your initial shot faster and more fluid. I suggest you all watch Aaron Cowan with sage dynamics how he does it and how he does follow up shots. You don’t need to release to the reset to shoot. It’s best to come off trigger but never separate finger from trigger then come back on the wall and press the next shot off
Which eye are you aiming with? It looks to me like you're using your left eye to aim with instead of your right.
I had the same impression. I'm right handed but partially blind in my right eye. As a result my brain has made me left eye dominant and have to shoot like that too.

After eighteen months or so using striker-fired pistols, it's interesting to use a DA/SA trigger and see how the heavier DA pull affects my "accuracy" (yeah, my shot groups do not qualify as "single hole drills" at seven or ten yards--at three yards, I'm not as bad as I think I am, but I'm not as good as I'd like--I'm hoping that a Mantis X2 and a lot of dry-fire drills will help that).
With a DA/SA trigger trying using more finger. You should be able to pull the trigger almost all the way back and stage the trigger. When your trigger finger makes contact with your support hand your hammer should be almost be all the way back and with just a slight squeeze then it should fire.

One of my best friends dad was Marine Corps veteran. One day we went shooting. His dad told us "keep the booger hook off the bang switch until you're ready to fire"
As any amatuer can tell you trigger control is a major issue. But the problem is not as much with the shooter as it is with the design. No matter how gently you squeeze off a round that final touch causes the entire gun to shift postion. Dry fire or not the activation of the trigger changes where the gun is aimed. Usually it will pull off to the side, very so slightly, but enough to make you miss, so it is more than merely trigger control. It is not simply your finger, it is how the gun is built. I find that I have to aim accordingly.
So it won't damage the firearm by dryfiring?
When I dry fire I have my green laser turned on and pointed at a wall at least 10 feet away because it allows me to see even the smallest movement of the gun effected by my trigger press in an exaggerated way...trigger pull is so much better now which is also reflected at the range as well! Just an idea

Stay on target some people are pulling their shots because they got their booger hook so far in the trigger well bowling left or pulling right instead of pulling straight back and even dry firing a good motion of practice if you do have a laser on your firearm and you're pointing it at a Target or a wall of course it's an empty firearm when your dry firing and you're pulling through the take up the brake the wall watch the laser drift a tad to the left or a tad to the right then check your trigger finger is it up to your first digit line or is it in the center of your fingerprint pad one of the best practices for accuracy and for newbies anticipating The recoil

Second, for a second try at a defective cartridge, try thumbing the hammer back.
Third, you failed to mention using the "ready" ammo for practice and replace it with fresh factory ammo every so often. Use the factory duplication handloads for regular range practice and use factory ammo for serious use.
And if my EDC is DA/SA?

I noticed when I’m dry firing or even firing at the range when I bring my index finger down from the straight flat position on the side of the firearm down into the trigger guard and onto the trigger I bump it and it moves side to side. Any advice on how to move the finger from straight down to the trigger without moving or bumping the firearm.
Just takes practice. I had the same issue with Glocks. My finger would always catch on the trigger guard. I just practiced pulling and dry firing.....over and over until it became like muscle memory.
Look up to the exercise I put on this post and work with that and it will teach you to be quick but smooth and consistent it's the one about balancing a penny on your site and then a dime as you get better
If you're alone in the room with the gun, what difference does it make if there's any ammo in the room? You've checked the gun. Bullets aren't going to load themselves into it, at that point. I'm all in favor of safe procedures, but the ammo in the room emphasis seems a bit much.

Most common issue is people slap the trigger.
removing contact with the trigger after pressing the trigger. Keep constant contact with your index finger touching the trigger. Let the trigger reset n follow it forward.

alwayz love your videos and knowledge,,,,,i recently saw a video on youtube where the guy demonstrating the weapon did very lil clearing the weapon on the video only held it up and stated it was clear minimal instead of like you or any other demonstrates a cleared weapon physically showing the weapon clear etc,,,when I left a not mean comment even stated how i enjoyed the video but would of like to of seen more clearing of the weapon and showing the weapon cleared to the viewers well he too things off to a serious left responded with I dont have to prove anything to you and went on further to state his ratings and how lots of others love his videos ididnt argue with him i apologized if he took what i was talking about out of context,,,i didnt bother saying any more to him because it was pointless,,,,,,,I enjoy your videos and knowledge and you getting viewers involved with fully clearing the weapon and showing and further return to talk your self thru operation of the weapon constantly beause its just that important,,,thank you so much!
My daughter put up these half inch sticker all over the wall there’s 9 of them. I like to stand in the middle of the room and my wife will yell a color. So I’ll get on target and I’ll squeeze of 3 “shots” making sure my sights stay on the sticker. Ps my gun is DOA

Different hands are … different. I’ve had a few wrist injuries over the years, have carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, and a few pinched nerves here and there. My index finger pulls sideways. It just won’t bend and pull back. I have to adjust by wrapping more of my finger around the trigger. When shooting long guns, I just use my middle finger because it can pull straight back.
