As an adult onset hunter who has become absolutely obsessed with “high country” mule deer that live in the timber, I really enjoyed this episode, like a lot! I’d love to hear more episodes on mule deer hunting tactics such as locations (as in north, south, east, west slopes), activity during different parts of the season. Here in NW Montana there is a ton of pressure both from other hunters and predators, but this past season I was able to see more quality deer than ever before just by sitting behind glass rather than wandering for a change. But In the same breath it was the first year Since starting hunting 6 years ago that I haven’t punched a single tag. And I was oddly ok with it. Love the podcasts!

Been hunting high country mulies and bulls, we can’t compete with their senses! Find a perch don’t get ancy watch for pattern and put your plan together!! Don’t know why everyone chooses to make tracks all over the mountains cuz the game knows where ya at and when ya are there?? I hike in off season for recreation and knowledge.....just a recommendation! Been a guide for 23yrs. Could be wrong

You guys are on point! I also grew up hunting blacktails and using tree stands for swamp elk. To summarize, I think what makes an above average hunter is the ability to observe and accept what nature is telling them. I have witnessed mature blacktail bucks mount and breed does from the middle of October to the first week of December. "The rut" seems to encompass a much larger window than most people think. Slow down, yes!! I once had a stand literally in a tree over the main road up the mountain. It was across from a clearcut that ALWAYS held deer. I had 50+ people stop at 2 "glassing points" for a minute or two and then drive right under me on their way up the mountain. Not a single person saw me or the deer that were IN THE CLEARCUT. I put the stand where I did because it was the only way to get in it with deer in the clearcut, they were used to the disturbance on the road. I also missed TWO shots at a TOAD buck 50 feet from said road. I found out later I missed because I hadn't cleaned my muzzle loader from the previous day when I fired it to check zero and put a fresh load in it. Turns out it isn't accurate with a fouled barrel. Learning opportunity...

Hi Brain i from Idaho and still hunt here. I started out the same way as your guest, pushing brush as my dad sits on the ridge wating to shoot. As i hav gotten older things have changed. I like the whole deal. Love to be in mountains for as long as i can, then try and shoot my deer 🦌. I grew up in the late 60 and 70 and have shoot a lot of nice deer. One over 30 inch buck in the late 70. And bunch of others and took home a lot of meat. Sorry for rambling on about my hunting life. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in. Thanks for your podcasts and video's. Keep up the great work!

I think what the person who said "I can't hang out with these guys, I'm just a meat hunter" meant was "wow I can't imagine having an opportunity like that and not taking it". As a second-year bow hunter who has become absolutely obsessed its mind-blowing to me how many animals you guys see. Last weekend I hiked and bushwacked 12 miles back into the most remote part of Sangre De Cristo's that I could find and I saw three elk. 2 of which I spooked in dark timber and only caught a glimpse of as they ran away. In a lot of these videos, it seems like you guys see animal after animal. I get that it comes with a lifetime of experience and dedication but on the other hand, it's hard to comprehend.

Brian this interview is the stuff i could listen to 20 times.
One reason for age class gaps are the 3-4 year old deer are the ones most hunters take.
First decent buck that they see and they (140 class) get hammered

I love all this mule deer content. Much more obtainable for a new hunter (i.e. you dont need a quad, horses, or 4 dudes to get your elk out)

I hunt open country mule deer in the rut with a bow in NM when I draw a tag. Typically 45-75 degree days. I always thought I wanted to hunt them in the snow, until I got my chance. We spotted a couple big bucks from the truck from about 500 yards and formulated a plan. The deer had no idea we were there to kill them. We got out of the truck, eased the doors shut, and they still had no idea we were there, I’m talking 2 180+ bucks pushing these does. We both take a step and the snow crunches.
500 yards. Ears went up from the whole heard like radar. Ears moving in all directions gathering sound. Next thing we know, they take off in the opposite direction full speed. The does smaller and faster and the 300 lb bucks struggling to keep up as if saying to the does, “wtf”. Now I hate hunting in the snow lol

Brian. I agree with you. Had one of those premium tags. Didn't find a "big buck". Don't get me wrong. Had a great hunt without a doubt. Saw some bucks, just not big bucks. The "how" is much more important than the "where". Where is important but not the most important.

Big mule deer bucks like aspen timber patches because grass grows a little longer. 6 to 7 year olds might only come out and feed 1 out of 6 days.

Agreed 100% hard horned is the only way to go for me. No desire to shoot velvet. Way more stealthy hard horned and just what I grew up on. Rifle is still a challenge. People forget that.

If you don't think it happens in this country you are foolish. Ruby ridge, Waco, those seem like extreme examples but ask a native american if you can trust our government.
