I'd say it's worse than that. If range was the only issue, the band could just downtune and he'd sound great. His mix voice is clearly shot so sings in falsetto to compensate. By using his mix sparingly, he can still scream when the song calls for it, not amazingly, but not terribly either.

It's more that he can't sing with distortion anymore. He sounded better with AC/DC because he was using Brian's vocal rig, which is set up so Brian can whisper since his natural distortion is dead and he can't sing loud anymore and they use something to digitally model his early distortion and it mixes with his voice. Axl should hire the guy who works with Brian so he can get a similar system.

the CD recording was 123bpm. This is slow at 117. Then it picks up to 120bpm and faster. Live versions need to be at least as fast as the recorded version or they drag. I agree it feels sluggish.

I’m at a water park today, and Sweet Child of Mine just came on their radio as I’m typing this. We’re trying to see all the cool old bands we can, while we still can. Going to KISS in December too. Unfortunately we just missed Sublime last week. One of my favorite bands of all time is Alice N Chains and I think they’re playing some shows with GNR on this tour, but unfortunately The Pretenders opened the show we went to, instead. He’s in his 60’s now. He spent his late teens, into his early 30’s screaming his lungs out and ragging out his voice. He destroyed those vocal cords. I’m surprised there isn’t an injection or surgical repair he hasn’t opted for to “improve” them.

Their hearts are all still beating which is remarkable considering what they've been through. It's sad to see that Axl has lost his voice, and now wished I would have went to one of his 2006 shows. I think that was the last time he sounded his old self, and now all we have are his recordings to cherish. I have had the chance to see GNR live multiple times over the past 5 years but cannot go knowing that he will never sound the same. Sometimes I search for the latest performance hoping that voice will magically re-emerge...but its like looking for that pot of gold at the end of a rainbow 😔

I have had the chance to see GNR live multiple times over the past 5 years but cannot go knowing that he will never sound the same. Sometimes I search for the latest performance hoping that voice will magically re-emerge...but its like looking for that pot of gold at the end of a rainbow 😔
