The dodge mechanic is made inadequate due to roll cancel, meaning every groove with a roll is vastly superior due to the fact that they can turn any normal or special move completely invincible lol

@jp3813 I don't think you grasped my post: roll cancel is so grossly overpowered that any groove that doesn't feature the "roll" mechanic is patently unviable. S & P groove are non-viable. I don't think K is viable, but some people do because it can get off 2 lvl 3 supers in one round...like n groove does...and n groove has the roll mechanic...and n groove doesn't have to take damage to get supers (lol) C, A, and N are the only truly viable grooves.

And yet, in professional play, it's considered the 'worst' groove because it has to deal with C-A-N roll cancel supremacy, K rage and Parry being better for reversal than the Spot dodge. But it's still so damn fun to see someone evaporate because they forgot you have infinite desperation super.

Bro, I used to main S-Groove Rolento/Ryo/Zangief. I wasn't the best at my local arcade, but I always rocked newcomers until they learned to adapt to me 😆 best fighting game ever IMO

Huh. I was today years old when I learned that S-Groove has (an overly expensive) alpha counter. The hell.

Have you thought of making a video compiling variants of the "fighting mode select" system? Invented by SNK but popularized by Capcom in CvS2's "grooves". They dont deserve individual videos like these groove videos, but a compilation would look nice, maybe in 2 parts if needed. KOF 97, 98UM, Neowave, Last Blade, SFA3, etc...

What a wacky concept for a meter type. If youre low you can just spam 1 bar supers

CvS2 game adopted this system, which is an idea from SNK (but only Capcom made a version with 6 choices), to let you pick battle mechanics based on past fg references. And S Groove is loosely based on the early KOF games, and those games by their turn make direct references to Fatal Fury 2 (1992), which indeed has infinite supers when you have low hp.
FF2 is probably the 2nd fighting game ever to have supers (the 1st was Art of Fighting) and it didnt have an actual meter yet... supers were only a low hp thing (which could be called the first comeback mechanic in history). So KOF 94 started with a meter system meant to combine ideas from Fatal Fury supers and Art of Fighting supers (the energy charge thing). That way you can use supers in two ways: charging up to the max, or at low hp... and in that 2nd case you have infinite supers.
In the end its just a reference to a primitive "super" mechanic (again, 92, just 1 year after the invention of SF2) which was more or less natural for KOF 94 and even more to CvS2, that made the different grooves to celebrate the 2d fg history as a whole. KOF still made references to that old system in KOF 97 and 98, but after that it was abandoned.

@@carlosaugusto9821 S Groove is more like KoF 96 system, where you can spam lv1 supers and if you have a low health and Super bar full you can use a lv 3 super (in CPS system reference) and the Lv3 Super has a red shadow/glow on the character. Just adding up what you said above

@@AndreChaosweapon Yeah that can be said too. Mentioning 94 served to highlight that KOF started wanting the super meter system to make a double reference to FF and AOF, as the root of infinite supers is FF2 and the root of charging up is AOF. And i just tried to give more attention to those roots to show that its all very old stuff. S Groove is shaped by some ancient and primitive mechanics.

This game had a lot of defensive options. Dive kick vortexes were less of a thing in this game. Oh boy SF4 - what was Capcom thinking.
