    One thing you didn't bring up which I feel deserves praise is the sound design. Especially Link's vocalizations. I was almost sad to pick up of the Zora Flippers because it meant that I would never hear the amazing sound effect of Link drowning again. His sounds when being electrocuted, burned or falling down a hole are also consistently amazing and adorable in their own, weird, sadistic way. Also Marin never sounded better singing the Ballad of the Wind Fish. The overhaul and updates to the soundtrack in general are stellar.

      100% love it, not every game has to look realistic and I haven't seen a lot of non-indie games with toy aesthetics. I do agree with the gameplay limitations though, don't like them, like not being able to run diagonally and not being able to re-bind the buttons.

    This remake came out at the perfect time for me... The day this game came out my girlfriend sadly passed away from her recovery from cancer. The theming of facing through nightmares to wake up from a dream... The lyrical version of the ballad of the wind fish? It helped me get through some bad times. Then as i saw marin fade in and out then fly away as the seagull i couldn't help but think my girlfriend was flying away from her pain. My dream of being together with her is now gone and all i have is the memories. But at least she is flying free... RIP my love. May me meet again in the next life...

      Charizard180 sorry for your loss dude. The important thing is, you’re looking on the bright side of life. It’s the best thing you can do after an event like that.
      Edit: I forgot to add that I also know what it feels like to lose someone. I lost my grandfather to cancer. My mom went over to his house to see if he was all right. At night he was doing just fine. My mom goes to check on him the next morning, he ended up dying in his sleep. I’m not saying this to gain sympathy myself, because this happened a long time ago, and I’m already over it. But… My point is, I do know the feeling of losing someone close to you.

    I'm someone who played the original back when i was a small child. It was hard, frustrating, but very fun! Playing it again 20 years later, I think its almost a perfect remake. I love love how exact the tiling is in the game. The grass squares, the jerky movement, its all perfectly adapted from the Gameboy version.
    The game was pretty short if you know where to go and what to do (I can't believe I still had so much of that my memory after so long), and the lack of screen transitions makes every so much faster.
    I loved the game, and while the art style might have been a little strange, I think it fit the Dreamy style of the game. I think the way they adapted the 8-bit 2d game to HD 3d was perfect; and I would LOVE to see the rest of Gameboy games adapted to the switch (Oracle games!)

    Massive fan of the original, which is probably why I'll wait for a pricedrop. A lot of the play time of this game relies on not knowing where to go.
    Being familiar with the game, you can blast through it pretty quickly which really makes it hard to justify the price even more. Hoping for an update to fix the framerate also.

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 5 лет назад +13

      Why should a game's runtime need to be long to justify its price? Does it really matter as long as you thoroughly enjoy your time and would want to play it again? If runtime was used to translate to price, you realize games like Elder Scrolls and Breath of the Wild would reach the hundreds, right?

    • @hikaru9624
      @hikaru9624 5 лет назад +7

      I think I see what you mean, I've played oot plenty of times and have four versions of the game so buying yet another version (at full price) of oot would be hard to justify despite knowing I'll enjoy it.
      That said I have never played Link's awakening so paying full price will be an easy pill to swallow, but I have noticed that the game play does seem similar to the Oracle games (more the other way around but still) so maybe paying full price isn't so easy to swallow after all?
      Either way it's a good game to have and worth looking into at the very least.

    • @DDDDDDann
      @DDDDDDann 5 лет назад +14

      Nerdy George Washington
      It’s not the only thing that matter obviously. The price is about how much utility you get from a game. A shorter time playing it means less utility

    • @elisehermann6094
      @elisehermann6094 5 лет назад +9

      Nerdy George Washington I paid full price for the game, and while I don’t regret it, I also thinks it’s a bit high for the game. However, given the hype, nostalgia and popularity of Zelda, Nintendo can totally get away with it. Obviously, I ran out and bought it on its release date and beat it in 3 days. 😅 Run time aside, I would be curious the amount of resources, time and effort that went into its development versus say BOTW, a game that also costs $60. It really makes me wonder what really determines the cost of a game. For example, should a game that takes 6 months and a 10 person team cost the same as a game that took 2 years and 75 people? These numbers are arbitrary just for sake of example. Just interesting to think about!

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 5 лет назад +2

      @@DDDDDDann But if a game gives you enough reason to replay it, you get all the utility multipled by some factor, possibly even greater depending on the game. Sonic games for example are monumentally more fun on repeat playthroughs since you're more familiar with the mechanics and flow of his movement. Most Mario games give you a great amount of choice in how you go about completing the game, allowing you to skip certain stages. This obviously makes each playthrough quite different. Zelda and Metroid allow you to create your own difficulty by giving you the choice of what items to grab and what ones to ignore. There is a reason 3-Heart runs of Zelda games and Low% runs of Metroid games are popular. These options that games give you mean they don't need to be long to be worth their price, since repeats are just as rewarding if not more so than the first.

    While I haven't played the remake and don't remember the story or the tone of the game, I do know that a cutesy art style _can_ fit a game with a somber tone - the Earthbound/Mother series has a bright, cute and colorful art style but tackles some really heavy subjects and dips into _Babby's First Psychological Horror_ every now and then to great effect. If the visual presentation and storytelling tone don't fit, it's probably the writing's fault.

    If they do such a thing as remake the "Oracle Of" games, I hope they make the third version that ultimately got cut for budget reasons back in the day. "Ages" and "Seasons" were two parts of what was originally supposed to be a *trilogy* of games, each representing a different goddess within the Zelda universe. We got Nayru, goddess of Wisdom, in "Ages" (hence why Ages was very heavy on puzzles). We got Din, goddess of Power, in "Seasons" (hence why Seasons was very heavy on combat). But we're missing Farore's dedicated game. As the goddess of Courage, I've always been interested in what *her* game would've been like...

      1. Real Orchestra (this game needs it).
      2. A richer overworld with more towns, even sidequests with little stories to add fun to the exploration.
      3. All the plus that the original game has over Breath of the Wild (way better story, good dungeons, the double clawshots).
      4. The twilight bloom effect back to the game, it's the artstyle, the current hd remaster has some bland lighting without that characteristic yellow/orange (fortunately, there is no big changes like the excesive bloom in The Wind Waker HD).

      @@loscoz honestly, I think it's worth the $60 price tag. It's best to base price tags off how long you played the game and how much you enjoyed it. Usually $60 is actually lower than what things like this should cost. $60 is what games cost 10 years ago and they still haven't changed. We're actually lucky they haven't upped the price on everything.

      Enjoyment is subjective. By that metric, the same game may be worth $100 to you, but $5 to me.
      Time invested is a better metric, but still not a great one. Depending on how you play Zelda games, Link's Awakening may take you less than 8 hours or over 20. When considering that game has that blurred effect around the borders and drops frames quite visibly fairly often to the point where it looks bad, just terrible, there's no reason that consumers should be expected to pay full price.
      This is also a remake, and that's important to note because although this is technically a new game, not much that is in it hasn't been seen before. You're effectively paying for a few quality of life upgrades for the original, some of which actually made the game worse. All-in-all, I think a price tag around $40-$45 would have been more appropriate, but if it were $30, I'd consider it to be definite good buy for anyone who hadn't played the original or wanted to play it again.

    • @loscoz
      @loscoz 5 лет назад

      this is my 4 time buying the game, i own a copy on GB, GBC, 3DS and now my Switch, i feel the game is well worth the money but if you are hard up for cash 10$ off is 10 off. the price to me is not an issue i feal the price of 60$ is valid as the game was built from the ground up. i also bought it new as that means more then the price you pay. my point to the comment was to point that there are good deals out there if 60$ is your hang up and another 15 hours to a game i have been playing and replaying since it was released in my childhood. i have easily sunk 5000 hours into this title and will most likely sink another couple hundred its that good of a game.

    I’m gonna repeat what I said on a video defending the price. Ocarina of Time 3D and Majora’s Mask 3D both recieved MASSIVE overhauls. New graphics, new textures, quality of life improvements... Ocarina even got Master Quest included and BOTH got 3D functionality added. These games were still only $40 and were MUCH larger more substantial games to begin with. While I ADORE this remake of Link’s Awakening, Nintendo is literally charging us a premium just for the DEVICE on which we play the game rather than the game itself. It should in no way have been more than $40.
    EDIT: Twilight Princess HD was a waste of a “remake.” I guess in 20+ years we might find out what a REAL remake should be. Wind Waker HD was GREAT, but still should’ve been $40. MAYBE $50.

      @@BigBadLenn oh I know that, trust me. There are MANY inconsistencies with Hyrule Encyclopedia. I mainly use it as a guide for the lore, and dive deep into the games to see if it's true or not.
      The whole "Termina is a dream world created by Majora using the sorrow of the Skull Kid" is complete BS, as we see the skull Kid in Termina prior to obtaining the Mask in a flashback, where he meets Tatl and Tael. Termina is a paralel world, not a dream world.
      Hyrule Encyclopedia is more of a guideline, than actual Canon. There are manybthings that are correct, but others that are plain wrong. You just have to take what you can out of it and know what is true and what isn't. Hopefully with my channel I can clear things up regarding the lore

    • @BigBadLenn
      @BigBadLenn 5 лет назад

       Zelda Lore The thing with they changing the order and even saying it's a whole new link is that it doesn't stay in place between the between worlds. It makes the oracles series so much more of a spin off as it already was and creates a Link, a new hero of oracles with little to no importance to the land of Hyrule, besides, he was summoned by the Triforce that was "free" in the world, we would need a history of who is guarding it between the end of A link to the past and the Oracles. But the Link hero from legend already fill that gap without the need of explaining such an history. It's a given he would be guarding it and attending to it's call after the end of Alttp and the beggining of the oracles series.
      I would like to point two of the biggest if not the only ones people use to disregard the HH timeline for HE.
      First, the boat have a different number of sails. In the beggining of Link's awakening is shown that Link is facing a big storm. It's not hard to imagine that that may have happened before, and he could have lost sails, but it may be an art choice too by capcom, that doesn't invalidate it beeing the same ship.
      And second and biggest of the arguments used. The Zelda encounter dialogue. In both she says "My name is Zelda. You must be Link, right?" I know it sounds strange, if they already knew each other why talking like that? Well, she shows that she knew soon after "I knew it at first glance", in other words, she does recognize him, but ( a little stretchy) being in a totally different land she wants to make sure it's the same link she knew.
      However, here is the real prove, in oracle of seasons after you save Zelda and she says the same as Ages, here she explains to Impa why she had come to such a dangerous place "Link was attacked by a great shadow... I had to do something..." Why a princess from another land, so far away from the land they are now, Holodrum, would go to such lengths for someone she doesn't knew?
      And more, being like this it makes the Hero from the legend the most experienced link from existence and the Old Man Link theory even more tasty.

When I pictured a modern interpretation of Link's Awakening, I wanted them to explore the heavy implications and tough decisions of Link's quest to wake the Wind Fish. I think the art style makes perfect sense for the themes the game is attempting to convey. Like you said, the odd toy-like style matches the strange, quirky atmosphere of the game. But even more than that, the art style makes sense from a storytelling perspective as well, since (SPOILERS!!!) Koholint island is merely an illusion and not quite real. Looking at the art style with this in mind, it makes Koholint Island seem like a diorama, with the toy-like style reflecting how what you're seeing isn't real and merely an imitation of reality. Plus, while the shortcuts the developers made are still visible, I think the style just looks great regardless. It's incredibly polished and very pleasant to look at and furthermore, the presentation is just very cute and unique, which is fitting for a game as weird and memorable as Link's Awakening.

    I love the game to death! When I was pretty young I played the DX version so Its extremely nostalgic to me.
    The funny thing is I spent my first couple hours of Link's awakening running around koholint on a nostalgia trip, collecting as many rupees as possible for that shovel and Bow.

    I played the game when it came out, and the thing that made the price tag worth it for me, at least, is being able to play the game with the new soundtrack. The live instrumentation really brings the game to a whole new experience, especially with the small amounts of voice acting they use now. All in all, I've had a lot of fun!

    Link's Awakening DX was my first Zelda gave I ever played. I bought it on the Nintendo Eshop for my 2DS back in 2017. I absolutely had a blast with the game! The experience was so fresh and new for me! At times I found myself about to cry at some over the conversations that Link and Marwin have. I almost didn't want Link to wake the Windfish and leave all of the characters on the island. Overall, the game is such a great title and I definitely recommend it for anyone, even if you haven't played any games like it! Listening to some of the music in the remake almost had me in tears! It truly is a great game.

    I loved the original game, and looking at this remake through that lens, I have been blown away.
    Clearly, the development team decided early on to preserve as much of the original world design & gameplay as possible, and they succeeded with flying colours. Even a few of the original unintended gameplay quirks have been preserved.
    No, they didn't have to do this. They could have retained the story and rebuilt the rest from the ground up, and that would have been fine. Still, for the direction they chose, I couldn't be more pleased (framterate issues aside). The art style works for me, and having the original soundtrack lovingly orchestrated here is truly beautiful.

    I personally LOVE the art style and would love to see the Hero of Legend's other titles remade in a similar way. Or at least the Oracle games. ALttP might prove a bit more difficult, but I'd still enjoy it. Or maybe they could try for the "A Link Between Worlds" art style for that. That could work exceedingly well.

    I'll never understand people who complain about Zelda: Link's Awakening for Switch being $60 "because it's a remake." They didn't remaster the game with a higher resolution; they rebuilt a 2D game from the ground up, on a new 3D, HD game engine.

    I was NOT a Fan of the artstyle, when the first trailer appeared, but since then I changed my mind. This style fits the game perfectly and would not work with any other game in the series. Because: the game is playing inside a dream. The whole toy-like aesthetics with a lack of real life details make it feel like an actual dream. And I especially like how the image gets very blurry at the edges of the screen; just like a flashback- or dream-sequence in movies or Manga/Comics!
    I know strongly disagree with the artstyle not fitting, because it's being so vage and unreal.
    I mean, that's the whole point of it!
    Also: The Intro and Outro are supposed to play in the real world, that's why they are so detailed and have Link not be Toy-like and instead realistic. It just perfectly shows the difference between dream and real world.

    After getting this game at a local small store for 30$, this game is actually really fun and cute. I was a little bent on spending any money on this remake from all the videos I watched but this game is actually a really nice way to play the original without having to deal with outdated controls. Even though the controls aren’t that much to brag about lol. I never even played the original but I have to say the art style is really enjoyable, the first time I ever heard link drown made me laugh literally nonstop! There’s so many little things you notice after picking it up again and again! Once it gets you sucked in, you are SUCKED in. The best part too is that my little nephew absolutely adores playing it too, so I think it’s a nice alternative to the original! The feeling of progression from 3 hearts and getting pushed around to just destroying everything in your path is so enjoyable. I was absolutely shocked when I went to Turtle Rock and beat all 4 mini bosses with a few hits!! Working hard and getting the crazy upgrades of both the koholint sword and the strength of the red tunic from the colors dungeon is just so satisfying. Made me wish I could play the game even more!

    Just my two cents. I love this game. It was the first Zelda game I ever owned. It’s weird but that’s what I like about it.
    As far as the visuals go, I like them just the way they are. I don’t need my top down Zelda game with expressive faces and ultra details. I’d rather see that in BOTW 2 and beyond. I agree that the frame rate issue sucks but it should be improved with a future patch ( I hope).
    Yes the QoL improvements could have been expanded further but there was rarely a time where I was cycling through many different items in a short amount of time. I agree that the stopping the game for the power items every time is annoying ( even on the original)
    FYI, you can use the dpad in the crane game. For me it made the controls much easier. But I never felt like I wanted to use the dpad during the main game.
    Overall I’m very happy with the remake. I hope a future patch will fix the frame rate issue and fingers crossed remove the power items text. Though I’m a huge Links Awakening fan I can’t say this game is worth the $60 price tag. But I would happily pay $40. I hope they do a similar remake where they combine both Oracle games into one.

    • @JoeyPaone

      If they keep the same engine, then they don’t have to build it from the ground up and probably could way easier charge 60 for both oracles... but will they.. is the question

    • @xKHAOSx13
      @xKHAOSx13 5 лет назад +1

      Joey Paone I think judging by the success of this game they would want to cycle in a “quick” top down Zelda in between the larger 3D titles. Now whether it’s the Oracle series or Link to the Past, or as the video says “a completely new game”, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    I am definitely on the side of improving a remake than making an accurate one. The primary feature of a Nintendo game is the experience you get from it. If they had an opportunity to make a more cohesive experience but choose not to preserve the accuracy of the original, then they have failed to reach their full potential. This doesn't make the game less fun, but it does mean that the race was enjoyable even though they tripped at the finish line.

    SPOILERS, this is my response to Arlo's end question.
    Alright, I was initially pretty worried about how the remake was going to handle the tone of the original. Truth be told there are still a lot of details that I think the remaster (which is, in my opinion, a more correct title than remake) gets wrong. I don't like how after you defeat nightmares in the late game and they describe the oncoming destruction of the island, the happy little victory jingle still plays. I don't like how in the beginning when you get your sword back, your first swing doesn't sync up to the music. I don't think the new title screen is nearly as epic as the original because of the instrumentation choices for the main theme. I don't like how sometimes the instrument choices in general get in the way of what should have been more creepy, surreal, or somber moments. Etc etc.
    There are a lot of little touches that I believe the original still does better, which is definitely a shame. However, I was surprised by just how much of the original feel was maintained, even with the cute art style. When I got the first instrument, and I heard the Ballad of the Windfish come from that cello as light began to encompass the screen, all before text ominously tells you your next destination, I got chills. Yes, the remaster perhaps fills in too many details in my imagination, but ultimately I still felt the full weight of the story. When it was revealed that Marin actually tried to erase the island herself around the seventh dungeon, I was shocked. I had forgotten about that plot point and I found something incredibly dark in it. It's still one of the most intriguing, surreal, and saddening games I've ever played in the series, and Marin telling me to never forget her still tugs at my heartstrings.
    In my opinion, that's really all this game needed to do. It needed to keep that intact. It especially helps that there is such a sharp contrast between the dream world (the toy-like Koholint) and the "real" world (the anime cutscenes), a choice I actually really admire. If you go into this game expecting a graphical remaster with some much needed quality of life improvements, a new dungeon randomizer (not maker), and some new content, I don't think fans of the original will be let down. I should know, I'm one of them.

That Nintendo sacrificed more creative freedom and a smooth world consistency for the sake of the game being square by square identical to the original.

    I greatly appreciate that this game doesn't have the extreme hand holding that a lot of games have now. Yes, there were several times where I was stuck b/c like you say, I just missed that one staircase or door I could have SWORN I already went through, but I don't see that as being bad. I feel like games like Skyward Sword and others in recent years dumbed things down so much-- through the hint system or constant reminder of what items are (which this game does do w/the acorns and pieces of power, sigh)-- it's nearly patronizing.
    I also love the style and graphics. It reminds me of claymation-- especially w/the blur when you move away from things.
    I didn't have any FPS issues and my only major beef w/the game is that there were a few times where combat seemed broken for me. The jumping guy in the Faceless Shrine was super broken for me. The only way I could damage him was doing spin attacks.

Ocarina of time remake was a lot better but the lighting was way worse and censored things like blood and the fire temple music. This remake is way better than Majora's Mask 3D and actually makes good improvements unlike Twilight Princess HD so I think it's one of the best Zelda remakes.
