I actually "get" black metal when I listen to this. I also strongly recommend the book Alhazred by Donald Tyson (aside from Lovecraft) as a companion to this sound.

Great band, but by far their most boring album.... I'd go as far as saying This album sucks ass.... I'll reiterate... their other albums knock this piece of crap out of the sewers... go see their other output for PROPER BM...
