It was one of those songs that didn't get a lot of airplay, but if you did catch it, the hook line stuck. Then you went crazy trying find out who the artist was. The internet made eveything easy.
Dude that’s exactly my situation! I heard it in San Diego, don’t even remember the year, but that chorus is infectious. What a strange phenomenon. I swear it was either 91X or 94.9 but I’m not sure why either station would’ve played it cuz it didn’t really fit their usual playlists. Was it ever on a sports game? I feel like it was for some reason.
@@infernicide666 -- Sometimes things don't get a lot of airplay when they first come out. The first time I heard this song was between Christmas of 1982 and New Years Day of 1983 on the radio. They added on the Top 100 charts, when I was listen the American Top 40 with Casey Kasem on the week ending of January 22, 1983.

Man, this song is frequently played on a somewhat alternative radiostation here in The Netherlands and I've always thought it was done by some current (2010-ish) indie band. Guess I was wrong.
The irony is that Mexican Radio was a thing because the broadcast range was large enough that a lot of teens in the southern region of the US could listen in for music local stations wouldn't play. Prototype alternative radio.
Until I overheard this song playing over the restaurant sound system the other night while eating at Shoney's, I had only ever heard the rap remix version by South park Mexican (SPM). I like this version too; it's got a really desert-y feel.
I hadn't heard this song in years. I was actually on a trip in the Western US this year when I finally heard it again, while we were driving through a desert. It really was fitting.
Wish I could find the polka/accordian cover of this. I know I heard it before on TV but I don't know who played that version cuz Shazam didn't exist back then. Maybe I'm just imagining things. *sighs*😓
