I saw Tony Arata (the writer of “The Dance”) perform at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. I talked with him afterwards. He was so down to earth and humble and of course forever grateful that Garth Brooks recorded his song. It changed his life.
When my wonderful wife and I heard "The Dance", we fell in love with it, and listened often, it was special. We were happily married for 34 years, then she suddenly passed away, 9 months ago. "The Dance" took on a whole new meaning. Thank you.
The dance IS a beautiful song. It was the first song my husband and I ever danced to, We were inseparable after that. A couple years later, it was our first dance at our wedding. Looking back, we had dumb little pains, money, lost jobs, how do we pay this bill or that bill. Then some big pain, miscarriage, early loss of his dad, losing his mom to dementia, my dad passing after a good long life, and now my mom passing a few weeks ago. In 2018 my husband had to go on disability from his job because he was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD semantic dementia.) I hope he doesn't feel the pain of the dementia like I do. That line "I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance" has never been more true than it is right now. God bless him for giving me such an amazing life, and God bless anyone else who feels those words in their own life.
It’s ironic you say that about this song. I too lost my husband 1 and half years ago, he loved this song. Even requested it for our wedding. Said it reminded him of our relationship. I never understood that until he passed away. I am sooo happy, I never missed the Dance.
THE most favorite song at Christmas is "The Gift" sung by Garth Brooks. I have been interested for years in knowing the history of this tune. It has a Spanish flare to it, and reeks of how the Spanish culture so elonquently and poetically tells the story of a miracle by Jesus. As a grown man who NEVER sheds a tear, I cried when I heard it for the first time. Please, someone, tell me the history of this tune.
If putting Garths name all over put it Out there then well and good because millions have enjoyed it. It is Garth at his best. If he had not Heard that night, the bluebirds might Just be singing. It is classic classy country at its best.

And yet he has "Written and Recorded by Garth Brooks" plastered across the front. Not strictly true is it?
