Nice rant! I think distilleries that have gotten better the last 10 years: Arran, Glen Scotia and Ledaig. Got worse: Macallan, Ardbeg and Balvenie. Still great: Springbank, Laphroaig and Bunnahabhain.
I’m with you.
And don't forget Lagavulin. They're still great.
@@jonathanbean7097 But owned by shitty Diageo who I've boycotted for the last ten years.
This was so much fun and an amazing experience for me. Thanks again for your generosity and the great time 🙏
Sub'd to your channel, nice to see you on the podcast.
@@brianpage6932 cheers
Nice show! I consider myself a retired hunter. At this point I have enough whisky to last 10+ years. I have purchased a bottle in weeks. Just enjoying what I already have.
Can’t wait until I’m content in that spot
Three whiskey musketeers! Fun good show when you guys are together I see… wiping tears of joy off your face ;)
Cheers
I was so happy to know that phases of whisky discovery is actually a thing. My spouse keeps telling me that I have a problem with the purchasing of too much. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. Great video!
We’ve all been there. Cheers
Love that peated px, I found it super tropical! My favourite Glen scotia I've ever had.
You missed my category of whisky drinkers, peat heads, so rare for me to drink unpeated whisky
Very true
My wife is the "it all tastes like floor cleaner" type of whisky drinker, while simultaneously having a better nose than me and getting the most amazing tasting notes. What a cursed existence it must be for her😂.
Nice rant guys, but next time get an adult-sized chair for your guest, will you?😉
Sascha, EXACTLY!! And my wife also seems to only like the more expensive bottles like Macallan 18 and Redbreast 15.
The stools are all the same Sascha 😅
@@WhiskyInThe6 haha, it must be the perpective foreshortening from him sitting farther back from the counter then. It's all good👍😂
Great video guys! I listened along as I tackled the garden this past weekend! In terms of where I fall, I would have to admit I straddle a fair few of the categories you mention! But as they say, its not about the final destination , but rather the drams that help you get there!
Amen my friend. It’s a journey.
Haha these are great. I’m in the phase of buying too many bottles, but I think I set enough constraints so that I should still be able to manage it.
The Campbeltown festival releases from Glen Scotia are fantastic. This year will be an 11yo lightly peated white port finish, really looking forward getting my hands on.
"creature that loves to collect"! That's Me, Spot on ! :)
I have both of those Glen Scotias. Managed to pick up a 2nd of the ex Bordeaux, but only one of the Peated PX before it sold out... ended up loving that one. Wish I'd managed a backup. Superb drop for the price.
Great rant, I can see myself in all of it.
Right now I'm the guy who wishes he could afford 18+ year olds exclusively while begrudgingly buying 5-11 year old indies.
My buddy, on the other hand you didn't mention. He's the oblivious cheap fxck with a huge thirst. He drinks alot so it's John Barr everyday and Glenmo 12 or Ardbeg an OA for those special pours. He collected all the, now empty GOT bottles and JW White Walker.
His philosophy is that it all goes to the same place so why spend more the $50.
He doesn't even realize that he's ingested a bucket of e150.
Oh man, as soon as I realized what the topic was about I was in my head going, oh I will have probably been an embarrassing number of these at one point. Fun rant! Love that Glen Scotia is putting out more special releases. Cheers 🥃
Cheers my friend
Brilliant guys nice idea I think you nailed a lot of them! I did everything backwards, just went off the deep end with peat and cask strength whiskies without ever trying the entry level Speysiders. Cheers guys 🥃
Thanks my friend. There’s no wrong way. (As long as it’s scotch 😅)
@@WhiskyInThe6 Amen to that!
I was collecting different mango tree varieties before I started buying whisky like a deranged ferret.
Great rant. Need to get some Scotia in my collection to join along. I’m definitely a collector and investor before anything else sad to say. But a few points for my defense 😆
There’s some things like discontinued distilleries and old or limited Macallan or whatever where the market price for those bottles makes me think twice about opening it because the experience may be nice and unique but the cash return might mean many more experiences with many more bottles. If I can I’m grabbing two of something. That makes me feel SO much better about opening a bottle. But realistically who can afford that!? I’m lucky to grab one of something and so most of my collection sits unopened. And that is SAD! But it’s also nice to know I have an unopened bottle of something unique, and to me that’s bragging rights and clout 😆 Another point I have to make is I’m more a social drinker, and don’t have a lot of drinking friends. And when we are drinking it’s usually at a bar or their house. So my collection at home gathers dust, even tho I’d much rather be enjoying them just circumstances don’t allow.
Last and final point. There’s not a bottle in my collection that I wouldn’t open if the right moment and company presented itself. I fully understand life is short and we need to live in the moment for all it’s worth. Great rant again, thanks for the uploads. Cheers guys 🥃
Amen brother. Thanks for tuning in. Cheers.
Really enjoyed the video
Great podcast. I recognised myself in too many of those categories, particularly the “back in my day” one.
It was a fun pod for sure.
I been drinking whisky for 25 years but the first fifteen it was mainly supermarket malts ,, last ten years I been exploring all kinds ,I must say I’m not a fan of peat , have tried most of them ,just don’t enjoy them ,
Living on the west coast of Scotland gives me plenty to explore , I travel to a lot of distilleries and I get to taste some seriously good malts ,, so now I’m discerning, but still hunting for the perfect bottle ,,, I even invested in a few casks over the years , Ben Nevis ,bladnoch and bunna, ,,, , over the last few years Arran 18 has been my fav , I buy plenty others to compare but none seem to hit the mark like that one , sometimes I tell myself why don’t you just buy another Arran 18 instead of searching for others , the hunt is still addictive,,
I’m with you on the Arran 18, what a beauty.
What a beautiful position to be in as a scotch fan.
I’m in the category of I only drink scotch, rum , bourbon and sometimes vodka in a Moscow mule. 🤪
I have both of those Glen Scotias. The 8 yr PX seems reminiscent of Benromach’s house style IMHO. Granted I haven’t tried Benromach Cask Strength, so I can’t compare Apples to apples. Good stuff nonetheless. Cheers.
The two greatest words in the world when used together when talking about whisky, OVER POUR!!!
I started out as a mostly bourbon guy, I really like trying other stuff currently I probably drink about 40/40/20 Scotch/Bourbon/Canadian. Peated scotch is very tasty, I really dislike most irish whiskey. Recently I tried a few Gins and would like to try more Tequila although I don't enjoy them too much, trying to spend less money and purge fomo too though LOL!, Wish there was an easier way to send samples too, a few things i'd love to send in for ya'll to have. There was some hilarious moments in this one.
Thanks Brian. Cheers buddy.
Its interesting around distilleries being better than they used to be. I'd say Glen Scotia falls firmly in that category as well. Their older bottlings were honestly not great from what ive heard
Ya I think Scotia has improved from personal experience
I recently provided 5 sherried/Port single malts to a Bourbon channel from 4 countries, 2 from Scotland (Glenallachie 10 B3 and 2017 Macallan Classic Cut), Irishman 17, Kavalan Kavafan Solist Sherry 8 years and Amrut Portonova (62.1%). They really only liked the Mac CC so the sherried cask strength to Bourbon channels does not always work :)
You can lead a horse to water…
10:45 interesting. How did you go about trading your Canadian whiskies? Did you take them to the store to trade for other bottles?
I think i used forums back in the day
@@WhiskyInThe6 interesting!
What kind of whisky drinker are you - I call myself an "open-the-bottle collector". Thanks for the fun!
oh the backup bottle....
Cali representative lol cheers
kilkerran heavily peated batch 6 or Port Charlotte 10? Same price. Can't buy both, which one ?
Definitely Kilkerran. Much harder to find. The PC10 is very good but you will have many opportunities to buy it. To me the Kilkerran is like a baby Octomore
Thanks for the advice 👍
PC10
PC10.
Now I'm confused 😅
Yeah guys , its impossible to review an unopened bottle
Good afternoon Guys I live in Toronto and I heard on this last show that you would have whiskeys delivered?
I am very interested in expanding my collection and would like to have some help in ordering whiskeys from other shops rather than this crappy system we have here in Toronto Via LCBO thanks for the great show and info
Try pretty much any store in Alberta.
@@WhiskyInThe6 I was hoping for a little more details help but thank you
@@whiteeskimo bsw, liquor lodge, prestige are all stores you can order from.
don't forget about those who say that whisky tastes like gasoline!
How much whisky do you drink weekly?
It used to be around 7 ounces a week on average. Now it’s between 3-5 but usually 3 ounces.
@@WhiskyInThe6 Just wondering how you can get through all your stuff with just 3oz/week when your also regularly getting new stuff? Cheers & interesting conversation.
@@robertzemko6590 I make a box of bottles for my brothers, parents and in laws every couple of month
@@WhiskyInThe6 Gee yer a swell guy!
27:30 Let's just say what we're all thinking. Scotch drinkers are way more open minded and sophisticated than bourbon drinkers. Period.
😂
yep, cracking a bottle is like ... well ... crack
Lol
bourbon is disgusting. Maybe one day I'll try one I don't absolutely hate.
That would be called RYE....good luck.
If you're not in the US then don't even bother. It's hard enough to find a decent domestic single malt
