    Colorblind people trying out Enchroma Glasses for the first time and seeing color! They might look like sunglasses, but Enchroma’s product actually boosts the saturation of red and green light. That helps to improve color vision in people with red-green color-blindness, the most common color vision deficiency.

    Most people have three types of color-sensing cones in their eyes: red, green, and blue. The wavelengths of light that these three cones absorb have overlapping regions. Color-blindness is often a result of a malfunctioning cone that causes wavelengths to overlap even more, resulting in poor color discrimination. The Enchroma glasses use a filter to cut out these overlapping wavelengths, allowing for a clearer distinction between colors, especially red and green.
    The invention was derived from the work of Don McPherson, who earned his PhD in glass science at Alfred University. McPherson was trying to design protective eye wear for doctors performing laser surgeries. It wasn’t until he let a friend try on the glasses during a game of ultimate Frisbee that he realized the technology’s true potential. McPherson’s friend just happened to be color-blind, and the glasses gave both of them a shock.

      Yeah ! Being human grants us about 100 SUPER POWERS ... most of which we take for granted every day . . . These videos are such a great RE-MIND-er to appreciate the beautiful complexities of our being. When the kid pulled up the "sunset porn," I was thinking... "oh oh, slow your roll, kid ... you'll see plenty of AMAZING sunsets in real life over time, but don't let that "sunset porn" spoil your expectations of REALITY ! " ;-)

      There's this reaction of this colourblind man seeing a sunset for the first time. He lost it.
      I can imagine that the first time he sees an actual rainbow (either "real" after rain or manmade with some wacky lightning effect) he'll also lose it.

      lol. People cry because they finally realize just HOW disconnected from the rest of society they've been. I mean yeah- If you're deaf or can't see color you already know that everyone else experiences the world different than you and that this therefore separates you from them, but you don't realize just HOW MUCH they experience things differently than you. It's a rush of a bunch of emotions- surprised and sad to know how separated you were from everyone else yet elated to know you no longer have to be separated. Most people don't experience so many emotions at once and add to that the new sensory information- it can be overwhelming.

      These videos are not planned and thought out and controlled for best "entertainment value". These video's are about family and people they love having their first experience with color, therefore, these moments are full of emotion and excitement being 'shared'. It is nearly as impactful on the family members as the one wearing the glasses. Again, it is a 'shared' experience when you love the one getting the glasses. Personally, I think it's touching.
      Hope this helps for more complete understanding.

      In "Ye Olde Times" (about 500 years ago), orange was called simply "yellow-red" and was considered as just another shade of red. This is why lots (4, lol) of orange things are called red-somethings: Robin Red Breast; Red Fox; Red Head; Red Deer; Red Dead Redemption.

    • @BEEBEE159
      @BEEBEE159 5 лет назад

      My understanding is that so-called color blind people actually do see in color, it's just that the colors are not the correct colors, and the colors they see are not as vivid. You seem to think that color blind people see in only black and white, but that's not the case.

    • @ShadowMosesLikes
      @ShadowMosesLikes 5 лет назад

      Jason Hart When did I seem to think colour blind people see in black and white? I know they don’t see all the colours of the spectrum which is why I say those who aren’t colour blind take seeing colour for granted.

    • @BEEBEE159
      @BEEBEE159 5 лет назад

      @@ShadowMosesLikes I thought you were under the false assumption that they see in only black and white because you said, " I always watch these in awe of that initial reaction to the beauty of colour those that have been able to see colour our whole lives, take for granted."
      From the comments, many people seem to think that color blind people have never seen colors before; but that is not true. They see in color; it's just that they see the wrong colors. They know what colors are, that's why they can readily identify the colors by name when they put the glasses on, without being taught. The term "color blind" really is not an accurate term to describe this defect. They should have called it "color distortion."

When I was a boy my best friend was color blind and I can only hope he has found this. The Obvious next step would be to make Enchroma in contacts and to be able to combine the outside and inside technology in one unit. Perhaps in the future with stem cell research this can be permanently corrected by rebuilding the cones....who knows? Until then, thanks Enchroma for bringing the world of color to those that have been missing out.

    After binge watching a stack of these,here’s what I’ve learnt NOT to do once you give a colour blind person the glasses.
    Do NOT ask them what they see as soon as they put them on.
    Do NOT smother them with cuddles.
    Do NOT talk over them and incessantly shove things in their face asking if they see the colour.
    DO give them space and time to experience a very surreal,magical,and beautiful moment that they’ve never,ever had before in their life….they’re trying to grasp what they are now seeing.
    Let them be for at least ten minutes minimum,and if they want a hug,I’m sure they’ll ask for one.
    Rant over.

    The colour blind glasses don’t work instantly tho it takes up to 15 minutes of wearing...

    • @stevenospam4216
      @stevenospam4216 3 года назад

      Emptycereal: Sometimes they DO work instantly. I believe most of the RUclips videos show people who do respond within the first ten to sixty seconds. These are the most entertaining videos for us viewers.
      Also, from the instruction manual: When putting on the glasses, allow at least 10 minutes for the eyes to adjust to the darkness of the lens and avoid removing the glasses during the adjustment period. Removing the glasses, even momentarily, will tend to reduce the effectiveness of the color enhancement.
      To ensure optimal effectiveness, wear the lens for at least 10 hours in a variety of situations over the course of 1-2 weeks. Depending on the rate of neural plasticity in the user, a significant amount of time may be required for the visual cortex to respond to the new information. [And, again, a response of ten minutes to ten hours, while still fantastic eventually for the users, would not be entertaining for YT viewers.]

    • @ElizaDolittle
      @ElizaDolittle 3 года назад

      It depends - some people see the difference instantly, some over the course of about 15 minutes, some never (which is sad).

      Despite some colors not the same as how regular chromatic eyes see them, there is a way to teach color blind people which colors are what, it just depends on which colors they lack. For instance, red is commonly seen as either brown or perhaps green. There is a color type where it is possible to get a glimpse of actual red but its a completely different color as well and some eye doctors are trained to play on this to have the color blind person register that that's what red is supposed to look like compared to the "red" they see from the lack of registering red. It's pretty complex stuff but it's possible to learn just as easy as teaching a chromatic seeing person the colors if you know how to do i and what to look for.

    • @ElizaDolittle

      They learn by subject and build references. Many have to rethink the colour perception of the colours when they have these glasses.

    I would have given the video a like, except for taking God's name in vain multiple times. Editing out the objectionable audio would probably increase your like count.
